An accident happened at 2:39 Sunday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 72 about a mile south of Route B which is about 15 miles southeast of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 21-year old Jessica Jones of Centerville was driving a 1999 Chrysler Town and Country southbound when a tire on the vehicle rapidly deflated causing the Town and Country to begin to skid. The Town and Country crossed the center of the road and traveled off the roadway and struck a tree. Jones and a passenger in the Chrysler, 10-year old Tanisha Blotts, suffered serious injuries and were flown to Columbia University Hospital. No one was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chrysler Town and Country sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Schwartz Towing.

An accident happened Saturday evening at 9:45 on Highway 32 about five miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Ford Taurus driven eastbound by 17-year old Ali Hawach of Salem, went off the right side of the roadway, struck a tree and overturned. Hawach suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by a private vehicle. Hawach was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Taurus was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving a traffic violation, a shoplifter, a counterfeit ten-dollar bill, and theft. On Friday, May 29th at 1:08 am, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of an 18-year old female of Newburg for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana. She was issued summonses to appear in court and released. That afternoon at 1:00, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 60-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued at $65.12. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. That night at 7:05, officers of the Salem Police Department served a search warrant at 109 East Third Street. The search revealed methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. A 29-year old Salem male was taken into custody as a result of the search and incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. On Monday, June 1st at 12:15 pm, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a counterfeit ten-dollar bill that had been passed at Gas Plus located on Highway 19 North. The investigation of the report revealed counterfeit bills had been passed and were in the deposit. Then at 4:06 pm, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an ex-parte violation. The investigation of the report revealed that a female of Salem had reported an ex-parte violation had occurred in the 500 block of South Henderson. That same afternoon at 5:22, an officer located a 31-year old Salem male who had an active arrest warrant from Shannon County. He was taken into custody in the 800 block of East Hawkins and later released with a new date to appear in court after posting bond. That evening at 6:20 pm, an officer located a 35-year old Salem male who had active arrest warrants from Adams County, North Dakota. He was taken into custody on the active arrest warrants in the 800 block of East Center and was incarcerated pending extradition. On Tuesday, June 2nd at 4:40 pm, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed a person or persons unknown took a money gram for $78.00 from the mail and cashed it without authorization. On Wednesday, June 3rd at 1:44 pm, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 19-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued $235.52. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. For the first time since 1978, a 3-year-old thoroughbred has swept racing's Triple Crown, with American Pharoah becoming just the 12th racehorse to do so. A sold-out crowd at Belmont Park witnessed American Pharaoh add the 147th Belmont Stakes to his victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. The win snapped the 37-year Triple Crown drought that existed since Affirmed last completed the feat in 1978.

Jhonny Peralta homered among his three hits and the St. Louis Cardinals used a three-run eighth inning to rally past the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 Sunday night in the finale of a four-game set. Peralta drove in two runs and scored twice, while Mark Reynolds hit an RBI double for the Cardinals, who have won five of their last six games. Starter Lance Lynn allowed two runs on six hits over five frames in the no- decision, but was backed by stellar pitching from his bullpen. Mitch Harris, Kevin Siegrist (3-0), Randy Choate, Matt Belisle and Trevor Rosenthal combined to allow just one hit and one walk over four innings of relief. Rosenthal earned his NL-leading 19th save of the season with a flawless ninth. The Cardinals will be in Colorado tonight to face the Rockies starting at 6:45 on KSMO.

Salvador Perez's solo homer in the bottom of the eighth lifted the Kansas City Royals to a 4-3 win over the Texas Rangers on Sunday. Kansas City starter Jeremy Guthrie allowed two runs on three hits while striking out five and walking two over 6 1/3 innings. Wade Davis (3-1) tossed a scoreless eighth for the win. The Royals snapped a three-game skid. The Royals will be in Minnesota to open a three game series tonight.

Funeral services for Rebecca Louise Boxx of Salem, age 85, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

A funeral mass for Robert Wind of Salem, age 80, will  be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 tonight. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Montauk Fire Department.

Funeral services for Garry M. Scantlin of St. James, age 66, will be held Wednesday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Memorials are suggested to the Missouri Veterans Volunteers Group.

Funeral services for Jesse Hogan of Steelville, age 87, will be Wednesday at 11:00 at the Steelville Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Britton Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Sellers Cemetery at Dillard, Missouri.

Funeral services for Richard D. Nash of Salem, age 73, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 that morning until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Autism Speaks.

Funeral Services for Ron Gorson of Salem, age 61, will be held Wednesday night at 7:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until service time. Interment will be held in Texas at a later date.
