Larry Johnson, a 32-year veteran of the National Park Service (NPS), has been selected as the new Superintendent of Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Johnson is the Superintendent of Jewel Cave National Monument in South Dakota, and since January 2015, has been on a detail assignment to the Riverways as the Acting Superintendent. He begins his new assignment in mid-June. Johnson holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Outdoor Recreation Resource Management from Iowa State University, and completed Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government Executive Education Program, the NPS New Superintendent Academy, and the National Parks Institute. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, he began his NPS career at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site as a Supervisory Park Ranger. He has also worked as a District Ranger at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Yellowstone National Park, and Voyageurs National Park where he earned the Midwest Region’s Harry Yount Award for excellence in rangering. He served as the Chief Ranger at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. He also served as Acting Deputy Superintendent at Badlands National Park. Johnson and his wife, Jan, a writer and artist, enjoy hiking and bicycling, visiting historic sites, and researching family history. In his new role, Johnson will manage a workforce of approximately 92 employees and an annual operating budget of more than $6.5 million.

An accident occurred at 11:05 Tuesday morning in Phelps County on Route O, just south of Phelps County Road 5460. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 34-year old Derrick Wells of Licking was traveling northbound, failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the roadway. Wells overcorrected and the Tahoe returned to the roadway and overturned ejecting Wells. Wells suffered moderate injuries and was transported by the Phelps County ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Tahoe was totaled and removed from the scene by C&C Towing.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving assaults, a burglary, vandalized vehicles, and a traffic violation. On Saturday, May 16th at 3:44 in the early morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 200 block of South Pershing in reference to an assault. The investigation of the report revealed that a 33-year old Salem male had assaulted a 32-year old Salem female. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect for assault and violation of an order of protection. He was incarcerated pending application of warrants. That afternoon at 1:57, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 200 block of West Eighth in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a residence and took a television valued at $250. Later that night at 10:31, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 900 block of South Pershing in reference to an assault.   The investigation of the report revealed that a 32-year old male of Bonne Terre had assaulted a 25-year old Salem male. The South Central Conference selections have been released for baseball and the Salem Tigers had two players make the 2nd All-Conference team and three more players made the Honorable Mention team. Named to the SCA All-Conference 2nd team were infielder Kobe Mead and pitcher Kory Ramsey. The Tigers named to the All-SCA Honorable Mention Team were infielder Jon Arzt, and outfielders Cameron Howard and Cody Manthey. Also for Salem, there were four players named to the All-District team. They were infielder Triston Dubois, infielder Jon Arzt, outfielder Cameron Howard and pitcher Kory Ramsey. Congratulations Tigers!!!!

The St. Louis Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 on Wednesday. Jason Heyward hit a homer down the right-field line to welcome Brad Ziegler (0-1) to the mound and even the score at three before Matt Carpenter scored the winner on a throwing error by the catcher after a force play at the plate. Kolten Wong hit a leadoff home run in the game in the first inning and Mark Reynolds drove in the other run for the Cardinals in the second inning. St. Louis starter Lance Lynn gave up three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks over six innings. Seth Maness (1-0) recorded the final two outs in the ninth to pick up the win. The Cards also found out they lost first baseman Matt Adams for 3-4 months with a severe right quadricep strain. The Red Birds will be off today.

Alex Rodriguez hit another historic home run, Brian McCann added a solo blast and the New York Yankees completed a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 4-2 victory. Chris Young (4-1) served up both homers and allowed all four New York runs in a six-inning stint in which he fanned seven. Mike Moustakas had a solo homer for the Royals and Alcides Escobar went 3- for-5 in defeat. The Royals will have the day off today.

Funeral services Melba Corrine (Rennie) Washausen of Salem, age 78, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.

Funeral services for Homer Lee Mounce of St. James, age 93, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery with Military Honors.

A Joint Memorial service for sisters, Martha Hamblin, age 94 and Virginia Covington, age 99, will be held Saturday morning, May 30th at 11:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Memorial service for Frederick Conyk of Salem, age 88, will be held Saturday, May 30th at 1:30 at the Salem Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Harry Thomas of Springfield, formerly of Viburnum, age 83, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from noon until service time Saturday. Interment will be in the Czar Cemetery in Viburnum with full military honors.

Funeral services for Daniel Hunter of Rolla, age 30, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Children of Daniel Hunter.

Memorial services for Carol Nadine Fraley of Salem, age 81, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time.

Memorial services for Donald Ray Swindell of Salem, age 60, will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
