NOTICE: The Salem Memorial District Hospital has published a Public Notice in the Salem News announcing that SMDH Family Healthcare will no longer participate in the Medicare program, effective February 28th. This is just a legal formality in order to complete the transition of Dr. Prince and her staff from the SMDH Family Healthcare in Physicians Office Building 2 to the SMDH Family Medicine Clinic in Physicians Office Building 3. For you the patient, nothing has changed. Dr. Prince and all the practitioners at the SMDH Family Medicine Clinic in Physicians Office Building 3 will gladly accept Medicare, Medicaid and most private or other insurance. If you have any questions, call the clinic at 729-8000 or the hospital at 729-6626.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Tuesday night at the boardroom. After approval of the agenda, Superintendent Steve Carvajal updated the Board on roofing needs at the high school and middle school. William Lynch Elementary Principal Kriste Crocker reported there are currently 60 new Tigers enrolled for preschool and kindergarten for next year. The Upper Elementary Principal Melanie Wisdom updated the Board that the 4th/5th grade Tiger Choir performed at the Strafford Music Festival on April 18th and received a 1 rating from the judges. At the Middle School, Principal Scott Roberts sent out congratulations to the Middle School Archery Team and Coach Radford as they competed at the National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky on May 8th and placed 88 out of 201 teams and qualified for the World Competition in Nashville, Tennessee on July 23rd thru 25th. Salem Senior High School Principal John Smith stated that numerous years in a row now, the Salem High School art had won 1st in districts. In new business, the Board approved to renew the partnership contribution with the Salem Community Center @ the Armory for $10,000. The Board then approved the 2015A MSBA policies and procedures updates, and board policies GCBA-R1 and JG-R4. The Board approved a bus purchase from Master’s Transportation for $58,362.80 for a mid-size bus. The Board then approved the 2015/2016 Professional Development Plan and building handbooks. The 2015/2016 preliminary budgets were then discussed with the Board. The Board approved the retirement of Gary Nash as Upper Elementary Counselor and the resignations of Jeff Schuchardt as Upper Elementary physical education, assistant football and assistant track coach; Kristina Jackson as a third grade teacher; Stephanie Strader as a fourth grade teacher; and Keith Peterson as high school science teacher. A motion was then made to approve the process to accept bids for roofing projects at high school and middle school. The Board then voted to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel where the board voted to extend the administrative stipend for Rich Parks. The Board then voted to hire Elizabeth Warden as a 3rd grade teacher; Roxann Cochrane as a 4th grade teacher; Aubrey Letchworth as a 5th grade teacher; Sarah Piatt as a 5th grade teacher; Kristan Cassity as a special education teacher; and Charles Schmitt as the Upper Elementary physical education teacher. The Board also hired Kyle Anderson, middle school physical education; Ronnie White as a personal aide; Joseph Messina for high school science, Angela Barnes for high school science; and Carol Pendergrass as a part-time speech implementer. For sports the Board hired Conrad Prugh as head boys’ basketball coach; Charles Schmitt as the assistant boys’ basketball coach, Sarah Piatt as the assistant volleyball coach, Matt Kamprath as cross country coach and assistant track coach; and Kyle Anderson as the freshman boys’ basketball and middle school football coach. The meeting was then adjourned.

An accident happened in Crawford County Thursday evening at 6:11 at the intersection of Cherryville Road and Roanoak Road. According to the highway patrol report, a 2010 Ford Mustang driven northbound by 42-year old Dana Immekus of Cuba, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a 2002 Ford F-150 driven westbound by 58-year old Harold Land of Salem. Land suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Pickup sustained moderate damages while the Ford Mustang sustained extensive damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Miles Towing.

A temporary bridge on Highway 19 over Sinking Creek in Shannon County is now open to traffic. Previously, the Highway 19 bridge over Sinking Creek was reduced to one lane with a weight restriction of 20 tons. According to Assistant District Engineer Chris Rutledge, the temporary structure will allow heavy truck traffic to avoid lengthy detours. Until funding for construction of a new bridge becomes available, the bypass will remain in place. The Salem Tennis Tigers season came to an end on Saturday with a 5-0 loss to Greenwood-Springfield in State Sectional Play. Greenwood then went on to beat Thomas Jefferson-Joplin 5-1 to move on to the Final Four and play for the State Championship on Thursday May 28.

Jhonny Peralta cracked a home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. Reliever Kevin Siegrist gave up a two-run homer in the 8th inning to Mark Trumbo after the Cards had a 2-0 lead to tie the game. Carlos Martinez scattered five hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts in the no-decision. The Cards and Diamondbacks play again tonight at 6:20 on KSMO with the game starting at 7:05.

Chase Headley, Brian McCann and Brett Gardner all homered during an eight-run first inning that set the tone for New York's 14-1 rout of the Kansas City Royals Monday afternoon. Jeremy Guthrie (4-3) was walloped for 11 runs and nine hits before being lifted with none out in the second inning. Jarred Dyson knocked in Kansas City's lone run on a 2-for-2 day at the plate. The Royals and Yankees will play tonight in New York.

Funeral services for Homer Lee Mounce of St. James, age 93, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery with Military Honors.

A Joint Memorial service for sisters, Martha Hamblin, age 94 and Virginia Covington, age 99, will be held Saturday morning, May 30th at 11:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Memorial service for Frederick Conyk of Salem, age 88, will be held Saturday, May 30th at 1:30 at the Salem Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Daniel Hunter of Rolla, age 30, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Children of Daniel Hunter.
