The City of Salem Community Wide Yard Sale is this Saturday, May 2nd. Sales will be occurring all over town. Maps are available at convenience stores around town, the City Administration Building located at 400 North Iron and the Visitors Center on Highway 19 and in Tuesdays edition of the Salem News. A central sale will be held behind the City Administration Building at 4th and Iron Streets in Salem. There are plenty of spaces are still available for $8 each and the deadline to reserve your space or spaces is Friday, May 1st at noon. For the sixth year, State Parks Youth Corps (SPYC) will provide Missouri youth the opportunity to work outdoors improving Missouri’s state parks and historic sites. Online applications are now being accepted for youth ages 17 to 24 to participate in the 2015 program. The SPYC is a cooperative partnership between the Division of Workforce Development and Missouri State Parks. In 2015, SPYC will employ Missourians between ages 17 and 24 at state parks and historic sites across Missouri, with the program running through December 31st. The youth corps pays $8.00 per hour and the length of employment will be 300 hours. Persons can apply to be an interpretive aide. The income eligibility is based on gross monthly income not to exceed 185% of Federal Poverty guidelines. Applications for the program are now being accepted online at thinkoutside.mo.gov.

A City of Salem/Dent County Dispatch Workshop will be held tonight at 6:00 at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, located at 1200 West Rolla Road. The tentative agenda includes a review of the purpose of the discussion and well as efforts made by other communities. There will be a discussion of the pros and cons such as should there be no change, continues as is; should there be a joint dispatch, or a central dispatch with or without Enhanced 911. The City of Salem/Dent County Dispatch Workshop is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving someone passed out in a vehicle, an assault, an active warrants. On Wednesday, April 15th at 3:59 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Casey's General Store located on Highway 32 in reference to someone passed out in a vehicle. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 25-year old Rolla female for possession of opiates. She was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. That night at 10:36 pm, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1800 block of South Oak in reference to an assault. That investigation revealed that a 22-year old Salem male had assaulted a 27-year old Salem female. A further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Thursday, April 16th at 3:11 in the early morning, an officer located a 28-year old Salem female that had an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. She was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. That same morning at 3:47 am, an officer located a 40-year old Salem male in the 100 block of South Jackson that had an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. Then at 4:30 that same morning, an officer located a 43-year old Salem male that had an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. He was taken into custody on the warrant and later released after paying the fine and cost. At about 5:11 in the morning on Thursday, April 16th, an officer located a 24-year old Salem female in the 800 block of North Pershing who had an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. She was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. At 9:30 Thursday morning, the joint chief of staff for the State Adjutant General, General BG Newman will officiate a ribbon cutting ceremony along with Eric Surles, the Commander of the VFW Post 6280, at the Walker-Roney American Legion Post 99 on Highway 32 West. Following the ribbon cutting, there will be refreshments served in the Bingo Hall. Then at 10:00, there will be an outreach for veterans in District 16 covering 10 counties. Reps from the Veteran’s Administration will be on hand to answer VA related questions on enrollment, claims processing. The Missouri Veteran Commission service officers will be on hand to help. Also available will be agents from organizations that provide help to homeless veterans, and representatives from state elected officials as well as the offices of Congressman Jason Smith, Senator Claire McCaskill and Senator Roy Blunt. The Veteran’s Day Affair is being held in an effort to outreach to the veterans of rural Missouri and to learn what benefits are available. The Salem Tiger Tennis Team will participate in the SCA Tennis meet starting at 10:00 in the morning. The Tigers will host Mountain Grove on Thursday at 4:00.

The Salem Track Team will participate in the St. James Invitational today starting at 3:30. It will be the last meet until the SCA meet on May 4th.

Matt Adams went 3-for-4 and was one of four St. Louis players to record two RBI as the Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-5, and even their four-game set at Busch Stadium. Jon Jay, Yadier Molina and Wacha also had two RBI for the Cardinals. Wacha (4-0), who allowed one run in each of his first three starts this season, gave up four runs on six hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win. The Cards and Phillies play again tonight at 6:20 on KSMO with the game starting at 7:05

Kendrys Morales capped a six-run seventh inning with a three-run homer as the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 11-5 on Tuesday. Reliever Brandon Finnegan (1-0) got the win for KC. Alex Gordon hit a solo homer in the second inning and Morales was 3-for-5 with four runs scored for Kansas City, which will look to complete a three-game sweep today in Cleveland.

Memorial service for Madeline Feba Lay of Salem, age 100, will be held this morning at 10:30 at the Salem Full Gospel Church. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Salem Full Gospel Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.

Funeral services for Murrell Peeples Jr. of Rolla, age 73, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time Thursday. Interment will be in the St. James City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Animal Shelter.

Funeral services for Lawrence “Larry” Baker formerly of Rolla, age 83, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time, with Masonic service at 10:30. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Garden. Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Children’s Hospital.
