The Dent County Sheriff’s Department has released a couple of reports from the weekend. The first incident happened Saturday when the sheriff’s office received a report of a burglary in the 1800 block of Highway 119. A lockbox containing cash was taken from a residence. The incident is under investigation. The second incident happened Sunday morning at 6:10 when deputies responded to the 5000 block of Highway 19 North for the report of a possible arson. Upon arrival, deputies observed 30-year old Brandon Kulp of Salem, attempt to set fire to the victim’s residence. Kulp was placed under arrest without incident and was transported to the Dent County Jail. He is currently being held on a $7,000 cash only bond. 

The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning for their regular meeting at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported grading would be done and materials would be added to Dent County Roads 2400, 5170, 5180 and 5190 while only grading would be done on county road 5600. Purcell said brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5400 and a man will be hauling in rock, stockpiling it at the Road and Bridge Department. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2090, 2405, 4380, 6120 and 6140 while materials would be added and grading done on county road 2403. Larson went on to say materials would be added to Dent County Road 3160, one man would be screening brown rock and another ma would be going to Springfield to get oil for the Durapatcher to repair chip and seal roads today. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles and Dent County Clerk Angie Curley had nothing to report. Jerry Kroner from EPM came by to visit with the commission. At the last meeting, Dave Mosher with Serv Pro in Rolla visited with the commissioners. Also at the last meeting, the commission voted 3-0 to accept bids for chip and seal, culverts and grader blades. The chip and seal bids are due by Monday, May 11th at 10:00 AM and will be opened at that time. The bids on the culverts and grader blades will be due by 10:00 in the morning on Thursday, May 14th and will be opened at that time. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Monday, April 13th at 9:06 in the morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 900 block of South Pershing in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed a 19-year old Salem female had damaged the door of a residence and put a dent in a vehicle. The estimated damage was $550. That afternoon at 3:02, an officer was dispatched to Country Mart in reference to a violation of a protection order. The investigation of the report revealed that a 33-year old Salem male, broke the back glass, valued at $300.00 on a Ford Explorer. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect for tampering, property damage and violation of an Ex-Parte order. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Tuesday, April 14th at 12:18, an officer responded to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 43-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued $5.48. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that same day at 5:53 pm, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 800 block of South Water in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took an aluminum extension ladder and a handheld G.P.S. valued at $200.00 from the garage of a residence. Anyone with any information regarding the property damage or theft reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Salem Middle School will hold the Salem Open Track meet at 4:00 at the SHS Track. Everyone is welcome to come and watch close to 70 athletes from Salem participate.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will participate in the Wood Bat Classic Friday and Saturday in Farmington at two fields. Salem will play Farmington Friday at 3:00 and then Northwest at 5:30 at Wilson Rozier Park. Depending on their first night results, Salem will either play at noon or 2:30 on Saturday in Farmington.

The St. Louis Cardinals confirmed Monday that ace right-handed pitcher Adam Wainwright will miss the rest of the season with a torn left Achilles, an injury he suffered over the weekend while batting. Wainwright will undergo surgery on Thursday. He is expected to be out of action for 9-12 months.

Ben Revere hit a two-run double during a three-run seventh inning, Cole Hamels tossed seven solid innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a 4-1 margin on Monday. Matt Holliday drove in the lone run for the Cardinals, who have lost two in a row since a four-game winning streak. John Lackey (1-1) allowed three runs on nine hits over seven innings. The Cardinals will face the Philadelphia Phillies again tonight starting at 6:20 on KSMO with the game beginning at 7:05.

The Kansas City Royals opened their three-game series against the Cleveland Indians with a 6-2 win. Mike Moustakas went 4-for-5, Alex Gordon drove in two runs and Jarrod Dyson stole three bases. Starter Jason Vargas (2-1) stumbled through five innings with a career high-tying five walks but limited Cleveland to two runs. The Royals and Indians will play again tonight.

Funeral services for Peter Ernest August Hahn of Rolla, age 83, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Animal Shelter or Delbert Day Cancer Center.

Funeral services for Virginia “Ginnie” Carrolla of Rolla, age 72, will be held today at 1:00 at the Ridgeview Christian Church in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time . Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Christian Campus Fellowship. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Memorial service for Madeline Feba Lay of Salem, age 100, will be held Wednesday at 10:30 at the Salem Full Gospel Church. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Salem Full Gospel Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.

Funeral services for Murrell Peeples Jr. of Rolla, age 73, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time Thursday. Interment will be in the St. James City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Animal Shelter.
