The South Central Missouri Community Action Agency will be holding a poverty simulation activity this Thursday, April 30th at 6:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church at 801 East Scenic Rivers Blvd. The Poverty Simulation is called “Harder Than We Imagined” and those that participate will find out what it is like to actually live in poverty. The hope is that this simulation will stimulate local interest in helping to alleviate this issue in our community. There are still some openings available for the general public and if you would like to participate, please call Doug Walter at the Salem United Methodist Church at 729-4551.

The Dent County Health Center Board of Trustees met Monday, April 20th. The board welcomed Shirley Larson who was elected for a four-year term in the April election. An audit bid from the firm of Maloney, Wright & Robbins as requested at the last board meeting came in at $3,200 to audit the fiscal year 2013-2014 and was approved by the board. Administrator Jane Jadwin reported that as of April 20th, a total of 378 confirmed influenza cases were reported in Dent County. The health center is still receiving reports of confirmed cases, however there has been a drastic reduction in the last couple of weeks, with only 2 additional confirmed cases being reported. Jadwin indicated in the last month that there were several reports of injuries involving animal bites and the Health Center wants to remind pet owners to make sure their animals are up to date on their rabies vaccines. The funding for the bio-terrorism contract will remain level for the next year, and the Health Center has submitted the proposed budget as requested by the state. Kendra Mobray, RN is attending her final SEMA training this month for “Incident Command Certification.” Jadwin discussed with the Board the need to fill the position of Planner for the Health Center, as Sylvia Jackson, RN/BSN has resigned effective June 30th. After some discussion, a motion was made to hire Eric Fuchs to fill the position effective June 1st, thus allowing time for him to be brought up to speed on emergency planning and the board approved the motion. It was reported that Karen Greene, RN has completed all local daycare training for the 2014-2015 contract year. The new contract and daycare presentations will resume this fall. The Board discussed the election of officers. A motion was made for Bob Parsons and Sandra Headrick to remain as Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively, and for Karen Barred to continue as Treasurer. This was motion was approved by the board. Jadwin did report the Health Center had a request from the SBU Salem Campus to serve as a clinical site for their nursing students beginning with the Fall Semester, 2016. The Board discussed the need for this program and approved the motion of going forward with this opportunity for our community. The next meeting will be held on May 18th at 5:00 at the Health Center.
