The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night at the city hall council chambers. The board heard from Richard LaBrash regarding the efforts of the American Legion and VFW Post to outreach to veterans in rural Missouri. Mayor JJ Tune presented a proclamation proclaiming April 30th as Veterans Affairs Day. The board heard from Matt Milligan with New Harmony Church requesting that 500 E. Center Street be closed to traffic on June 20th from 2-6 pm for a music outreach. The board approved this request and a request presented by the Current River Cruisers Car Club to close Fourth and Iron Streets around the Court House on June 20th for their annual car show. The board approved Bill No. 3289 an ordinance to notify the State of the passage of the Park and Recreation Sales Tax. The aldermen adopted Resolution No. 1-2015 declaring the election results of the Municipal Election held April 7, 2015. City Clerk Mary Happel gave the oath of office to West Ward Alderman Chad Heithold and East Ward Alderman Haydn B. Powell, Jr. Happel then presented outgoing West Ward Alderman Philip Giacomelli with a plaque for his four years of   service to the community. The board then elected Powell as President of the Board of Alderman. Mayor Tune appointed and swore in William Camm Seay as City Attorney, Mary Happel as City Clerk and Keith Steelman as Chief of Police. The board approved a list of the committee appointments recommended by Mayor Tune. Alderwoman Molly Zettel gave the Utility Rate Committee report. The committee discussed allowing property owners to turn on and off utility service with a phone call instead of having to do it in person. They discussed allowing budget billing with an average of 12 months bills to help stabilize customers bills over the year; extending delinquent cut off dates into the first week of the next month to allow for customers on fixed incomes to get their checks and pay their bill; electronic billing procedures and credit card service fees were also discussed. Zettel also discussed proposed water and sewer rates for residential and commercial customers in Salem and for those on city utilities out of town. The city is in the process of preparing a rate study release to show just how the proposed water and sewer rate increases will affect individuals and businesses in Salem. This information is expected to be released very soon. A pubic hearing will be held on June 1st to get public input on the new water and sewer rate structure. The other proposed changes recommended by the committee will be discussed at future meetings of the utility committee. City Administrator Ray Walden reminded the citizens that the City Wide Yard Sales would be held the first Saturday in May with city clean up dates being held May 4-11. The 2014 audit report will be held at the next alderman meeting. Chief of Police Keith Steelman discussed a police car that is in need of $6,000 in repairs. The board suggested the car be taken out of commission, then sold and a new car will be planned for the next budget year. The board voted to go into closed session to discuss contract and personnel.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department reports that on April 14th, a person arrived at the Dent County Sheriff’s Office alleging she was a victim of an Ex-Parte Violation. As a result of the investigation, it was discovered that the violation occurred while the suspect was incarcerated in the Dent County Jail. As a result, Michael Mathis has been charge with five (5) counts of Violation of Ex Parte. Mathis committed the violations by contacting the victim. Mathis is currently being held in the Dent County Jail on a $25,000 cash only bond. Then on April 16th, deputies responded to the 600 block of County Road 6490 for a report of a burglary. It was revealed that approximately $2,500 worth of items had been taken from the residence. That investigation is ongoing.

High School Principal John Smith at the Board of Education meeting Thursday reported on student achievements during the month. The SCA Math and Science Relay winners were Dane Thompson getting 1st in Chemistry II; Hayden Major taking 2nd in Physics, Nick Julien capturing 2nd in Physics, and Josiah Beckett took 4th in Physics, Josh Sirois captured 5th in Bio II, and Shane Dahms took 3rd in Probability/Statistics. Also the 9th and 12th grade team took 2nd place and the 10th grade team took 3rd place. Smith also reported that a total of 11 students have been selected to attend the 2014 American Legion Boys State of Missouri Program this summer including William Bottorff, Wesley Connell, Ali Hawach, Gabe Morton, Austin Reed, Joseph Schott, Josh Sirois, Jordan Sutton, Toby Toman, Matthew Tuttle, and Caleb Watts.

An accident happened in Reynolds County Tuesday night at 6:15 on Highway 72 about three miles west of Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, 50-year old Lesa Harris of Salem, was driving a 2014 Chevy Cruze eastbound when she became distracted. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway, crossed through a ditch and then struck some small trees. Harris suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. Harris was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevy Cruze had moderate damages and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

Cody Manthey had two hits including a bases-clearing three run double in the 7th inning and finished with four RBI as the Salem Tigers beat St. Clair on Tuesday, 8-1. Kobe Mead and Kory Ramsey each had three hits and an RBI to help pace the attack. Jon Arzt got the complete game win as he gave up six hits and one run, walked two and struck out four. Salem is now 9-5 on the year and they will travel to Willow Springs Thursday for SCA play.

Yunel Escobar smacked a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Washington Nationals to a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game set. The Cardinals sent the game into extras following Matt Holliday's RBI single in the ninth inning. The Cards and Nationals play again tonight starting at 5:10 with the pre-game show with the game starting at 6:00.

Mike Moustakas drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. Moustakas also hit a two-run homer, and Alex Gordon added a solo blast for the Royals. Chris Young (1-0) picked up the win after tossing two hitless innings in relief. Kansas City starter Jason Vargas gave up five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Royals go for the sweep tonight.

The St. Louis Blues will try to even the series tonight against the Minnesota Wild. The game time is set for 8:30 with the pre-game show starting at 8:00. KSMO will stream the game on ksmoradio.com and on KSMO after Cards baseball. Minnesota leads the series, 2 games to 1.

Funeral services for Cleatis Wisdom of Steelville, age 88, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Crossville Cemetery in Bunker with Full Military Services.

Funeral services for Peter Ernest August Hahn of Rolla, age 83, will be held Tuesday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Animal Shelter or Delbert Day Cancer Center.

Funeral services for Helen Peterek of Salem, age 90, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Peterek Family Cemetery. Memorials are may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
