The Salem Tiger Quiz Bowl team went 5-0 on Saturday and defeated Dixon in the finals to win the Class 3, District 9 Championship. Salem will now advance to Sectionals to face Seneca on April 29. Congratulations Tigers!!!

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their re-organizational and regular meetings Thursday evening. After approval of the certified elections results, was the swearing in of the newly elected Board members, incumbents Chris Heavin and Carrie Snider, who were both unopposed. Superintendent Steve Carvajal then acted as temporary chairman as the Board again elected Bernie Sirois as President of the Board. The Board also voted to keep Dustin Howard as Vice President, Carrie Snider as Secretary and Chris Heavin as Treasurer. The Board also kept Larry Maxwell as the MSBA delegate and Holly Erway as the alternate. The Board voted to adjourn the re-organizational meeting and go into the regular meeting. After approval of the agenda and communications, Carvajal stated that there are some minor issues with the roof and they are nearing the end on fixing those. Assistant Superintendent John McCullough then give the report for William Lynch as Mrs. Crocker was on assignment. Summer School enrollment will open on Monday, April 27th and forms will go home with the students. The summer session will be for incoming kindergarteners and first graders. Preschool registration will be held May 12th and Kindergarten registration will be held May 13th. Parents are asked to call William Lynch for an appointment at 729-6611. At the Upper Elementary, congratulations went to Christopher Harris for winning 4th place in the 4th grade Target Test at the MCTM contest in Rolla on Saturday. The 4th place Team Contest went to Micah Heisler, Brayden McColloch, Tayton Barton and Collin Heavin. Serendipity will be held on May 14th. At the Middle School, Mr. Roberts reported the Middle School Archery Team would be competing at the National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky on May 8th. At the high school, Mr. Smith reported that the Chamber Choir trip to New York trip to sing at Carnegie Hall is April 24th through 27th. Smith wanted to congratulate Zane Kyser for being selected to play in the Football Iron Classic this summer and congrats to the Softball Team for being names Class 3A GPA State Champs. It was also noted that credit recovery and driver's education would be offered this summer for summer school. Board President Bernie Sirois wanted to thank the entire community for their support for that money was raised to send Chamber Choir members to Carnegie Hall. In new business, the Board approved the 2015-2016 meal prices, which will raise ten cents, and they approved the 2015-2016 tuition rate, the same as last year of $7,417.68. The Board also approved job descriptions for a couple office personnel. The Board approved the resignations of Kirsten Davis, assistant volleyball coach; Amy Leach, para-professional; Phil McClintock, Middle School physical education, head boys basketball, cross country and golf coach; Charlie Pace, freshman basketball coach; Kimberly Marlin, special education teacher and Christina Crocker as a personal aide. The Board also accepted the retirement of Lisa Nash. The Board then voted to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting tonight be the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, will the reading of bills and resolutions. Bill #3289, is an ordinance required in order to notify the State of the passage of the Park & Recreation Sales Tax will be presented to the Board. The Board will then canvass the official Certificate of Election Results and then approve Resolution #1-2015 certifying those results. After the Oath of Office to the elected officials will be the organization of the Board of Alderman. Mayor J.J. Tune will then make his appointments for City Clerk, City Attorney and Chief of Police; following will be their Oath of Office. The Mayor will then make his appointments to the Standing Committees with the Board’s approval. During the hearing of persons, Mayor Tune will present a Proclamation to Mr. Richard LaBrash proclaiming April 30th, 2015, as Veterans Affairs Day. The Current River Cruisers Car Club is requesting the closure of 4th and Iron Streets in Salem around the courthouse on June 20th for their annual car show, and Matt Milligan from New Harmony Church is asking permission to block off the street in front of 500 East Center, His Place, for a music outreach. Alderwoman Molly Zettel will present recommended policy changes and rate change recommendations from the Utility Committee workshops. City Administrator Ray Walden will update the Board on issues and items concerning the City of Salem, followed by a report by Mayor Tune. In new and miscellaneous business, one of the city’s police cars is in need of repairs that could cost around $6,000. The Board will vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing contracts and personnel. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Salem Baseball Tigers took 3rd in their tournament this weekend due to the run differential as three teams tied with 2-1 records. Salem beat Licking, 5-4; beat Eldon, 10-9 and lost to St. James, 10-2. Salem is now 7-5 on the year and they will host Cabool today at 4:30. Kolten Wong hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-1 win on Sunday night and a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds. Adam Wainwright went 8 strong innings giving up just one run to go to 2-1 on the year. Matt Carpenter homered to lead off the game for the other Red Bird tally as the Cardinals will be off today.

Kendrys Morales hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 4-2 win over the Oakland Athletics in the rubber match of a heated three-game series. Franklin Morales (1-0) got the win after retiring Lawrie on a popup to end the top of the eighth. Kansas City will host Minnesota tonight.

Vladimir Tarasenko posted a hat trick and Jake Allen turned aside 24 shots Saturday to help the St. Louis Blues to a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild in Game 2 of this Western Conference quarterfinal series. Patrik Berglund also had a goal for the Blues, who were able to split the first two games at Scottrade Center. The Blues will be in Minnesota tonight at 7:00 for Game 3 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Michael Wayne Roberts of Rolla, formerly of Salem, age 53, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Pauline E. Hopkins of Potosi, age 100, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Viburnum Chapel. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 this evening. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Emanuel United Methodist Church of Viburnum.

Funeral services for Cleatis Wisdom of Steelville, age 88, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Crossville Cemetery in Bunker with Full Military Services.
