Officers with the Salem Police Department were detailed to the 100 block of South Washington at 4:58 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15th in reference to a gunshot. Upon arrival, the officers discovered that the victim had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The coroner was called, and pronounced 36-year old Kevin Byington dead at the scene. Byington’s body was taken to the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done and materials added on Dent County Roads 6110 and 6070, while grading only would be done on county roads 5105, 4150, 5680 and 5615. He added that brush would be cut on county road 5410. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent CountyRoads 4290 and 3180, and materials would be hauled to county road 3140. Larson went on to say that he had a man screening brown rock at the Road and Bridge Department and that a crew was patching a number of chip and seal roads. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles noted that after last Thursday’s meeting the commissioners met with the Shannon County Commissioners, MoDOT officials and US Food representatives about the Sinkin Creek Bridge on Highway 19 and the recently imposed 20 ton load limit. All were pleased to learn that MoDOT plans to have a temporary bridge in place within 4 to 6 weeks and that a new bridge is their number one priority. Plans are to start construction as soon as the temporary bridge is finished and all permits are in place. Skiles went on to say that last Monday the Commissioners and Dent County Clerk Angie Curley attended the MAC Legislative Meeting in Jefferson City where they met with Senator Dan Brown and Representative Jeff Pogue. Skiles was very pleased to report that on Tuesday the US Senate passed the reauthorization of the Secure Rural Schools Act for 2014 and 2015 at 95% of the previous authorization. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that Monday at the MAC Legislative Day, she had the opportunity to visit with several legislators about a number of legislative issues that affect county clerks. Curley felt that it was a very productive meeting. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams was in to report the sales tax receipts for March of $62,591.75. Williams said that the year-to-date receipts are down $5,530.92. She indicated that she’d had a number of questions as to when the road and bridge tax would start. Skiles said that the tax collection would begin in October with the first receipts coming in December. Sam Wilson of Senator Roy Blunt’s office called to set up a mobile listening post at the Courthouse on May 12th from 11:00 am until noon. Sandy Ogle with the US Bank came in to discuss the agreement on the 2013 used SUV Sheriff’s vehicle. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles signed the agreement. The agreement is for three years with the first payment of $7,240 due this month. The second payment of $9,132.43 will be due April 2016 and the final payment of $9,132.54 due April 2017, for a total of $25,505.08 at 1.48%. The budgeted amount was $27,000. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 in the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Triston Dubois RBI single with two-out in the bottom of the 6th inning drove in Nate Bray and proved to be the difference in the Salem Tigers 5-2 win over Houston Thursday. Dalton Cook had a two-run single in the 4th inning to tie the game. Kory Ramsey went seven innings and gave up four hits and two runs to get the win. Salem is 5-4 on the year and 2-1 in the SCA. They will hold their tournament this weekend with Licking, St. James and Eldon starting at 4:00 today at the SHS Field.

The Salem Tigers Tennis teams defeated Licking 12-0 to move to 7-1 on the year. Salem will next play in the West Plains tournament on Wednesday April 22nd.

The Salem Tiger Track Teams will participate in the Cuba Invitational today starting at 3:30.

John Lackey tossed seven scoreless innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-0 in the rubber match of a three-game series on Thursday. Lackey (1-0) gave up five hits while striking out eight and walking one for the Cardinals. Yadier Molina, Matt Carpenter, Mark Reynolds and Matt Holliday had one RBI apiece for St. Louis, which pounded out 11 hits. The Red Birds play Cincinnati this weekend starting tonight at 7:05 on KSMO.

Torii Hunter had three hits and Joe Mauer drove in three runs to lead the Minnesota Twins over the Kansas City Royals, 8-5, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Target Field on Thursday. Lorenzo Cain went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Jason Vargas (1-1) couldn't make it through the fourth inning in suffering his first loss of the season. Vargas was charged with five runs -- four earned -- on 10 hits, striking out one and walking one, in three-plus innings. The Royals will host the Oakland A's with a three game series starting tonight.

Devan Dubnyk posted 19 saves and the Minnesota Wild grabbed a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Blues in Game 1 of this Western Conference quarterfinal series. Jaden Schwartz and Alexander Steen lit the lamp for the Blues, who allowed an empty net goal before Steen scored, then allowed a second empty net goal in the final 20 seconds. Jake Allen allowed two goals on 27 shots. The Blues and Wild will play Saturday at 2:00. KSMO will stream the Blues game on ksmoradio.com until the Cards game is over and then move the game to the radio side.

Funeral services for Kevin James Byington of Salem, age 36, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Fire Protection District.

Graveside services for Arzetta (Miller) Mathenia of Licking, age 62, will be held today at the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem following the visitation starting at 11:00 Friday morning until 1:00 PM at Fox Funeral Home of Licking.

Graveside services for Virginia Marie Nash of Salem, age 88, will be held today at 2:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.

Funeral services for Margaret Marcus of St. James, age 85, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Meramec Hills Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps Regional Hospice.

Interment at the Green Forest Cemetery for Rhonda Kay Hickman of Fenton, age 50, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
