missourinetThe Cosmopolitan Club of Salem hosted the Miss Salem Pageant and Variety Show Saturday night at the City Hall Auditorium. At the event, Natalie Leathers, the daughter of Jeff and Christy Leathers, was crowned the 2015 Miss Salem. Leathers will get to compete in the Miss Missouri Pageant for a chance to win that title. If successful, she could represent Missouri at the Miss USA Pageant. State Farm Insurance sponsored Natalie. The First runner up was Lyndsey Parker, the daughter of Jim and Michele Parker, sponsored by The Bank of Salem. The second runner up was Jessica Cason, daughter of Brian and Lisa Mangogna and Scott and Michelle Cason and P’zaz Hair Salon sponsored Jessica. Congratulations goes out to all those who participated in the pageant.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving theft of fuel, a burglary, property damage and a found item. On Saturday, March 28th at 7:23 in the evening, an officer was detailed to Mobil gas station in reference to a theft of fuel. The investigation of the report revealed the driver of a white four-door car pumped $39.00 in fuel and left without paying. On Tuesday, March 31st at 3:21 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of East Truman in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed a person or persons unknown entered a residence and took items valued at $1,200. On Wednesday, April 1st at 12:39 in the afternoon, an officer responded to the Dent Memorial Chapel in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed two concrete flowerpots valued $200 had been vandalized. On Thursday, April 2nd at 7:29 in the morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 800 block of East Fourth in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed someone unknown broke the back glass valued at $200, on a grey 1991 Buick. The Salem Police Department has recovered a chainsaw and is seeking the owner. The owner may provide the make, model, color, serial number and or other adequate identifiers to take possession of the chainsaw. Anyone with any information regarding the theft of fuel, burglary or property damage reports is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released reports involving a domestic disturbance and a hotline call. On Friday, April 3rd at 7:24 in the morning, deputies responded to an address on County Road 5045, in reference to a domestic disturbance that had taken place in which a firearm was used to threaten a female subject. Deputies located the female subject at the residence; however the male subject had left the residence and area. Deputies remained at the scene until the female subject was able to secure some emergency clothing and household items and depart the residence. Also on April 3rd, Deputies assisted the Division of Family Services with a hotline call. After a short investigation, consent to search the residence was granted. During the search, prescription pills, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia were located. As a result, 27-year old Cassandra Cook and 31-year old Derek Hayes, both of Salem, were arrested. Cook is currently being held in the Dent County Jail on a $21,000 cash only bond and Hayes is currently being held on a $35,000 cash only bond. This information is an accusation, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of these charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.

The Salem Tiger Tennis team defeated Mountain View 9-0 on Thursday to move to 4-1 on the year. The next match is at Rolla this afternoon April 13 at 4:00 pm.

The Salem Baseball Tigers game will be at Ava for SCA play today starting at 4:30. Salem is 4-3 on the year and 1-0 in the SCA. The game can be heard online at ksmoradio.com live and KSMO will join the game in progress after St. Louis Cardinal Baseball.

Matt Carpenter's two-run home run off Kevin Gregg in the 11th inning lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. Carpenter drove in four runs, and Jhonny Peralta's two-run homer in the eighth tied the game at five. Carlos Martinez was sharp in his first start of the season, allowing a pair of solo home runs in six innings with eight strikeouts. Carlos Villanueva (1-0) pitched the final two innings as the last man out of the Cardinals' bullpen. The Cardinals took two of three games from Cincinnati winning 4-1 on Saturday behind Michael Wacha and are now 3-2 on the year. The Cards home opener is today against the Milwaukee Brewers starting at 3:15 with the pregame show starting at 1:40 on KSMO.

Yordano Ventura struck out seven and mixed it up with reigning AL MVP Mike Trout before leaving another start early and the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 9-2 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep. Ventura (2-0) allowed two runs, four hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings but left after developing a cramp in his right leg. Alcides Escobar and Alex Rios hit two-run doubles and Escobar finished with three RBI for the reigning AL-champion Royals, who improved to 6-0 for the first time since going 9-0 in 2003. Salvador Perez added a solo homer and two RBI and rookie Paulo Orlando hit two triples and scored three runs in the win. The Royals start a three-game series against Minnesota today.

Jori Lehtera's two goals and 23 saves from Brian Elliott led the St. Louis Blues to a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild in a prelude to a first-round Western Conference playoff series. Vladimir Tarasenko added a goal and an assist for the Blues in his return from a five-game absence caused by a lower-body injury. Alex Steen, who missed St. Louis' previous six contests with a lower-body issue of his own, contributed two assists. The Blues won the Central Division and finished behind Anaheim in the Western Conference. They will host Minnesota in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs starting Thursday night at 8:30 at Scottrade Center and heard on KSMO Radio starting at 8:00.

Funeral services for Leonard Barton of Union formerly of Salem, age 66, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 this morning until time of service. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery with full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Post #99.

Funeral services for Eugene “Doyle” Summers of Salem, age 79, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 this evening. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery.

Visitation for John Wickam of Salem, age 77, will be held Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. There will be no service.

Funeral services for Walfriede Maria Magdelena “Wally” Stroburg of Salem, age 88, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Project Win.

Funeral services for Wayne Davidson of Salem, age 83, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Black Oak Baptist Church in Marshfield. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Black Oak Cemetery in Marshfield.

Graveside services for Virginia Marie Nash of Salem, age 88, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.
