missourinetThe Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the courthouse. At the meeting, S.N. Ball and Doug Walter came in to discuss a Poverty Simulation activity called “Harder than we Imagined” that will be held on Thursday, April 30th at the Salem United Methodist Church starting at 6:00 and they invited all the commissioners to attend. Walter said the event could handle as many as 86 participants as this exercise will bring living in poverty into a new light for many. Jim Wood from Dent County Road 6190 brought in a signed resident petition to reduce the speed on county road 6190 to 25 mph. The commission approved the request by a 3-0 vote. Wood also thanked the commissioners for the great job the road crews did on the roads this winter. Veigh Hogan came in and reported on the trash being illegally dumped on county road 3280. He also wanted to know the specs on putting in a culvert pipe as he is building a driveway to his barn. Commissioner Larson said a work crew would check it out and let him know what size he will need and the county will install it once the culvert is purchased. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said a crew would be servicing grader #26, plus changing the tires on county dump trucks #115 and #119. He also stated that workers would be doing chip and seal patching on various roads. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said workers were out checking trouble spots on roads and cleaning out pipes. Larson also said chip and seal patching would occur in his district. Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that all three commissioners met with Senator Roy Blunt on Monday in Bunker at the Bunker High School for an update on the Secure Rural Schools Act. Blunt said it looks promising for re-authorization for the distribution of funds for 2014 and 2015 at 95% of their previous level. Afterwards, they attended the presentation of military awards to Roy Williams of Bunker at the firehouse. Skiles said that on Tuesday, he and Commissioner Larson attended the Forest Service discussion in Viburnum concerning Mark Twain forest service roads. Purcell was not able to attend as he had a prior commitment. The commissioners were all appreciative for the public passing the sales tax to support the road and bridge department. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that only 14.96% of the registered voters participated in the April election. She and the commissioners will be attending the MAC legislative meeting in Jefferson City on Monday so there will be no commissioner meeting that day. The meeting was adjourned so all three commissioners could attend a meeting concerning the Sinkin Creek Bridge in Shannon County. The next meeting for the commissioners will be held Thursday, April 16th at 9:00 and it is open to the public.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their April meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the meeting, the Board reviewed a financial report, reviewed and approved bills and also reviewed the calendar. In the monthly reimbursement report, a total of 32 calls came in for the month of March that included six calls for structure fires, seven calls for brush fires, two calls for landing zones, seven first responder calls, four calls for vehicle accidents, two mutual aid calls, one call for haz-mat, one call for a meeting, one call for training and one other call. Total calls-to-date for the year are 93. There was no oldbusiness, but in new business, bids werepresented to replace the main furnace. The furnace was installed back in 1969 and has quit operating. Three bids were received, and after discussion the Board voted to accept the bid from Salem Heating and Cooling for $8,400 to replace the furnace. The Board then set their next meeting for Tuesday, May 5th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. The meeting was then adjourned.
