missourinetThe Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning for their regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4210, 5600 and 6500 while materials would be added and grading done on county road 6280. Purcell indicated that a new driveway culvert was being installed on Dent County Road 6300 which is a chip and seal road. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2150, 2155, 4060 and 4070, while materials would be added to county roads 2030 and 3330. He said materials would also be added and grading done on Dent County Road 5240 and one man would be going to Springfield to get oil for the Durapatcher for chip and seal repair. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind persons that the Mark Twain National Forest would be holding an open house to discuss as part of a study of the forests road system at the Viburnum High School from 5:00 to 8;00 today. He recommends that people attend to let the Forest Service know how important those roads are in the national forest because once they are closed, they will never be opened again. Even though the national forest service says the road study is not a decision, it may be used for possible future road management planning. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley is reminding voters if they are not sure where to vote today, please call her office at 729-4144 with any questions before going to the polls. Liz Gruendel from the Task Force for a Healthy Dent County made a presentation to the commission to erect a symbolic metal trout on the front lawn of the courthouse. She reported that Dent County came in 110th out of 115th when it came to being a health community which is not good. These fish are a symbol of the work being done in the community to make it a healthier place. They are about six feet tall and have been made in Dent County. Gary Nash did the design artwork for each fish with volunteers adding something to each of the fish. There were 11 of these trout created from a grant and they will be placed around town. The commissioners agreed to place the metal trout on the courthouse lawn facing Highway 19 on the north end of the lawn. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

A General Municipal Election will be held today to elect school board members in four school districts, including Bunker, a West Ward Alderman for the City of Salem, an Alderman for the City of Bunker and one proposition and two questions will also be on the ballot. The City of Salem will select a West Ward Alderman for a two-year term, from three candidates, while incumbent Haydn Powell will be running unopposed for the two-year term of East Ward Alderman. The Oak Hill R-1, Dent-Phelps R-3 and Northwood R-4 school districts will each be electing two new board members to three-year terms as well Bunker R-3. Proposition 1, is a sales tax of 3/8 of one percent for the purpose of providing funding for local parks for the municipality for the City of Salem. Dent County is asking a countywide sales tax at the rate of ¼ of one percent for a period of seven years for the purpose of maintaining and improving roads and bridges in Dent County, while Bunker is asking to authorize and forgo annual elections if the number of candidates who have filed for a particular office is equal to the number of positions in the office to be filed by the election. Voters are encouraged to get out and vote and let your voice be heard. Polls will open at 6:00 am and close at 7:00 pm.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released reports involving a traffic stop, trespassing and a theft, a domestic disturbance and a hotline call. On Monday, March 30th, deputies discovered a black zipper case as the result of a consent search during a traffic stop. Arrested was 26-year old Nickelous Terrill of Salem. Terrill was placed on a 24 Hour Hold in the Dent County Sheriff's Office jail pending the issuance of warrants. Deputies have requested warrants for a felony for Possession of a Controlled Substance, a misdemeanor for Operating a Motor Vehicle Upon the Highway Without a Valid License and a misdemeanor for Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Maintaining Financial Responsibility. Also on March 30th, deputies responded to a report of trespassing in the 1600 Block of County Road 5490. During a short investigation, it was revealed that previous renters had caused damage to the residence. The total damage was estimated at about $3,100. The investigation continues. On Wednesday, April 1st, a victim entered the Dent County Sheriff's Office to report a theft. The victim reported a Blue Nikon COOLPIX stolen from her residence in the 300 block of Private Lane 315. The value of the camera as reported by victim is $279.95. Suspect information was given and the investigation continues.

Kory Ramsey threw a five hitter and struck out 12 Mountain View-Liberty Eagles as the Salem Baseball Tigers won Monday by the score of 1-0. Kobe Mead drove in the only run with a 3rd inning singled driving home Jon Arzt. The Tigers are now 3-3 on the year and 1-0 in the SCA. They will host the St. James Tigers this afternoon at 4:30 at the SHS Baseball Field Complex. You can hear the game on KSMO radio and online at ksmoradio.com. The Salem Golf Team will be at Willow Springs today for a meet at 4:00 while the Salem Track Teams will be at Mountain View-Liberty also starting at 4:00.

The undefeated Salem Tiger Tennis Team will be at Waynesville this afternoon at 4:00. The tennis team enters the contest with a 3-0 record.

The St. Louis Cardinals will be at Chicago tonight to face the Cubs in the second of their three game series. Game time is set for 7:00 and the pre-game show will begin at the conclusion of the Salem Tigers baseball game.

Yordano Ventura fired six-plus sharp innings, surrendering just one run, four hits and a walk, and Alex Rios went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, as the Royals routed the Chicago White Sox 10-1 on Opening Day. Mike Moustakas also homered and scored twice, while Alex Gordon delivered a two-run single and Alcides Escobar ended 2-for-4 with three runs scored as the Royals began their title defense with a solid performance. The Royals will be off today.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Winnipeg Jets tonight at the Scottrade Center. Game time is set for 7:00. Due to the conflict with the Cards broadcast, the Blues game will not be aired on KSMO Radio. KSMO will stream the Blues game on ksmoradio.com.

Funeral services Vondel Lee Callahan of Davisville, age 87, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the New Dillard Cemetery.

Funeral services for Charles R. Halbrook of Rolla will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the First Baptist Church in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Wednesday night at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Rolla or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Funeral services for Pearl Jean “Jeanie” Worley of Cherryville, age 66, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cherryville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Funeral services for Catherine “Kay” Hutchens of Salem, age 75, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Glenna B. Norris Foundation for the Life Sciences.

Funeral services for Gail E. Curley of Salem, age 52, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery.

Funeral services for Virginia Nash of Salem, age 88, are incomplete at this time and are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.
