The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, James Fulton was in attendance to ask the commissioners about the abandonment of Dent County Road 2230. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles and District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that after conferring with Prosecuting Attorney Sid Pearson, the road cannot be abandoned due to the ack of use because the county is receiving CART funds on the road. They told Mr. Fulton that he would have to go through the petition process so that a public hearing could be held to determine if the county would like to abandon the road. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 4210 and 5615, and that work was going to be done on the intersection of Dent County Roads 6070 and 6040 at the end of the pavement of Route NN. He also said that a man would be screening brown rock at the county shed. District 2 Commissioner Larson stated that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 2090 and 2200. He also went on to say that workers would be cleaning out road pipes and taking care of some downed trees. Presiding Commissioner Skiles reported that he visited with Don Santoff from the Steelville Telephone Exchange about the 9-1-1 concerns in the Sligo area. Santoff said that all the calls from the Sligo area MUST go to the Crawford County 9-1-1 before being redirected by law. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she is working on the 2013 county budget. She reminded the commissioners that a General Revenue budget hearing would be held Monday morning at 10:00. She also said that the swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected county officials would be held at 1:30 Monday afternoon in the courtroom of the Dent County Courthouse. Skiles also wanted to remind everyone that the Dent County Collector would be open until 5:30 today and Monday evenings for those who wish to make their tax payments. At the last meeting, Prosecuting Attorney Sid Pearson reviewed the lease from US Bank for the purchase of the truck for the Sheriff’s Department, then he and Presiding Commissioner Skiles signed the lease. Pearson also presented the commissioners with a letter regarding the LERF fund that would also be sent to the LERF trustees. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.
Filing for the two East Ward and one West Ward aldermanic positions in the City of Salem continues until January 15th. Currently signed up for the one-year East Ward position are Ryan Whitaker and Aaron Grammar, while Dr. Haydn Powell has filed for the two-year East Aldermanic seat. On the West side, Alderman Phillip Giacomelli has filed for re-election and Todd Kinerk has also filed. There is a $25 fee to file, you must be a citizen of the United States, you must be at least 21-years of age, you must be current with all property taxes and you must reside in the ward you wish to run for at least one year.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol encourages everyone to make good decisions regarding their New Year’s celebration. If you plan to drive to a New Year’s gathering, remember to buckle up and obey all traffic laws. If your plans include alcohol, plan for alternative transportation. The roadway is no place for a driver who has been drinking. If you cause a traffic crash, your new year might bring getting arrested, legal fees, medical bills, or jail time! If you kill or injure someone, you’ll pay a price for the rest of your life. No one wants to begin 2013 in jail. Be smart! Designate a sober driver. During the New Year’s traffic crash counting period from 6:00 tonight to 11:59 Tuesday night, all available officers will be on the roadways. Last year, 777 traffic crashes occurred in Missouri over the New Year’s holiday weekend. In those crashes six people were killed and 311 were injured. One person was killed or injured every 14.8 minutes.

The Salem Lady Tigers fell to the Bolivar Lady Liberators on Thursday in their second game of the Lebanon Holiday Tournament by a score of 69-50. Kaytlyn Wells had 14 points while Kristin Hemken added 11 points for the Lady Tigers, who fall to 5-5 on the year. Salem will next play Saturday morning at 10:00 against the loser of the Ava/Eugene game being held today.
The seventh ranked Missouri Tigers will be on the west coast tonight for a primetime match-up with the UCLA Bruins. Mizzou is 10-1 on the season and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio, starting with the pre-game show at 8:30.
The St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs will be playing their season finales Sunday afternoon at 3:25. The Rams will be in Seattle to face the Seahawks and the Chiefs will be in Denver to play the Broncos. St. Louis is 7-7-1 on the year while Kansas City is 2-13.

James Daniel Schwartz, age 80, of Salem passed away Friday. Mr. Schwartz’ wishes were to be cremated. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.
