Native trees, shrubs, and woody vines can help improve wildlife habitat and soil and water conservation while also improving the appearance and value of private property. The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) George O. White State Nursery near Licking offers Missouri residents a variety of native seedlings for reforestation, windbreaks, erosion control, as well as for wildlife food and cover. The State Nursery provides mainly one-year-old bare-root seedlings with sizes varying by species. Seedlings are available in quantities of 10, 25, or 100 per species. Prices for seedling quantities range from $6-32 per bundle. Receive a 15-percent discount up to $20 off seedling orders with a Heritage Card. Orders can be placed until April 15, 2015. Orders will be shipped or can be picked up at the State Nursery from February through May. Quantities are limited so order early. Seedlings varieties include pine, pecan, oak, dogwood, tulip poplar, cottonwood, sweetgum, cypress, birch, hickory, willow, persimmon, pawpaw, deciduous holly, redbud, wild plum, ninebark, witch hazel, serviceberry, mulberry, elderberry, and many others. Images and information on available items, and ordering information, can be found in the Department’s 2014-2015 Seedling Order Form catalogue. The catalogue is available in the November issue of the Missouri Conservationist, at MDC regional offices and nature centers, online at mdc.mo.gov, or by calling the State Nursery at 573-674-3229. When you decide on the trees you want, there is sales tax of 5.725 percent that will be added to all bills unless you furnish a tax exemption certificate. There is also a handling charge of $5 added to each order. Do not send a payment or credit card information with your order. You will be billed later. This prevents you paying for items that may have sold out before your order is received. No phone orders are accepted. Orders can be submitted by mail, Internet or fax. Orders are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis until supplies are depleted, and each year many species sell out quickly. To get the plants you want, please send your order in as soon as possible. After your order has been processed, you will receive an acknowledgement card about two weeks after placing your order stating what seedlings that can be furnished. This card also is your billing notice and includes sales tax. Please pay promptly by check, money order, MasterCard or VISA after receiving the billing notice. Please write your order number on your check. Orders must be paid in full before they can be shipped or picked up. If payment is not received within five days after the due date indicated on the card, your order will be canceled and the stock reallocated. If you DO NOT receive a billing card from the nursery, call them at 573-674-3229 to inquire about the status of your order.

More than a dozen sunset maple trees now line the entrance to Viburnum, along the Viburnum High School varsity baseball field. The trees, a gift from The Doe Run Company, are the culmination of the company’s yearlong celebration of its 150th anniversary, and reflect the company’s commitment to social, economic and environmental responsibilities. Doe Run worked with local landscaper Distinctive Landscaping Design to determine which species of trees would provide the ideal shade and vibrant fall color, as well as tolerate the weather conditions of the area. Each of the 17 trees were hand-selected and were planted by Distinctive Landscaping Design on November 8th. Viburnum High School expects that the landscaping will be the first of several improvements made at the baseball fields. In the future, the school hopes to raise funds to renovate the dugouts, batting cage and bleachers in order to improve the athlete and fan experience at the baseball fields. Over the past several years, Doe Run has helped transform many of the Viburnum schools’ facilities. These projects included building a new running track, renovating the gymnasium, and developing a small amphitheater where teachers can lead outdoor classes and creating a commons area where students can congregate during lunch and after school.
