The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2400, 2410, 5080, 5220 and 5410. He indicated that brush was going to be cut on county road 5360 and workers are preparing the equipment for snow removal and salt spreading. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2020 and 3300 while patchwork would be done on county road 5320. He said that workers would be servicing truck #116, then installing the snowplow and salt spreader on that truck and on truck #114. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said MoDOT has confirmed the grand opening of the Highway 32-72 East improvements would be held Monday, December 9^th at 1:00 at the Highway 32-72 and Route W junction. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she received a letter concerning PILT payments and a one-year extension to the program has been included in the President’s budget although the new land descriptions and assessments, and a copy of the old payment will not be requested to determine the 2014 fiscal year payment. She also said that budgets continue to come in from office holders for the 2014 budgets. Dent County Surveyor Craig Ruble came in and requested the county budget the re-numeration of 15 original surveying corners again this year. He said this used to be done through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources but is now being overseen and administered by the Missouri Department of Agriculture. The cost is $250 per corner which comes to a total of $7,500 of which half will be reimbursed by the state to the county. The commissioners approved his request. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held on Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. J.J. Tune was in attendance in  regards to being paid for the boarding and care of Phineas. He stated that his contract was with the city just like it has been in the past and not with the owners of the dog. Mayor Gary Brown said the bill has been turned over to the court to be paid from the bond given the court by the owners. Tune said the city should pay the bill, then the city should be reimbursed by the court for their expenses. He then proceeded to present City Clerk Mary Happel a bill for late payment of additional 10%. With City Attorney William Camm Seay not in attendance due to illness, Alderman Haydn Powell voted to pay the bill with Alderman Kenneth Nash seconding the motion. Alderman Philip Giacomelli and Ryan Whitaker both voted against paying the bill and the Mayor broke the tie with a no vote against paying the bill. The Board approved the purchase of a Soundsens Pod leak detector from Fluid Conservation Systems for $15,100, plus a computer will also have to be purchased. The purchase includes $1,500 for all water department personnel to be trained on the equipment. City Administrator Clayton Lucas said that there would be no parking on 4^th Street this Saturday from McArthur to Iron Street for the Chamber of Commerce Parade of Lights that will start at 5:30. Fourth Street will be closed starting at 1:00. He stated that a Salem Community Betterment Recognition Banquet would be held Wednesday from 11:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon at the ONCRC. He reported that the airport engineer said the project for the Salem Airport this spring is on schedule for the resealing of the runway and taxiway. Alderman Nash said that he would like the city to look into getting a leaf vacuum that can be used on the streets instead of a loader that damages the streets as well as the curb and gutters. Lucas said that he would look into the different options available. Mayor Brown reported that next summer, the Highway 8/68 bridge over Dry Fork Creek south of St. James will be replaced and the road will be closed at the bridge for three months. He said the asphalting of streets in town has now been put off until the spring, and the City Seniority banquet will be held Friday night at the City Hall Auditorium. The Board approved Resolution #19-2013 that lets the mayor sign a quit-claim deed to release a portion of a vacated alley adjoining 300 East Franklin, and they approved Resolution #20-2013 that allows the mayor to release a portion of the vacated alley adjoining property at 500 South Main also with a quit-claim deed. The recognition of a city employee was postponed until the next meeting and Salem Police Chief Keith Steelman informed the alderman that the police department would be destroying a number of records over seven years old in compliance with the Local Records Preservation Program. The meeting was then adjourned.
