An accident occurred early Tuesday morning at 12:10 in Dent County on Highway 32 about ten miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Chevrolet driven by 34-year old Michael Wood of Salem was traveling westbound on Highway 32. Wood lost control of the Chevrolet in a curve. The vehicle went off the right side of the road and overturned, ejecting the driver. Wood suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital, then to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. A passenger, 19-year old Cory Phipps of Salem suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Phipps was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving shoplifters, counterfeit money, and a warrant. On Tuesday, November 16th at 2:46 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 29-year old Salem male for taking merchandise valued at $10.00. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. At 2:48 p.m. that same afternoon, an officer was detailed to Dollar General in reference to a possible counterfeit twenty-dollar bill. The investigation of the report revealed that a patron was attempting to purchase merchandise with a counterfeit bill. The counterfeit bill will be forwarded to the Secret Service and the report is under investigation. Later that night at 10:55, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter.  The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 24-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $10.94. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Wednesday, November 17th at 11:00 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center in Pacific to serve a warrant from the City of Salem on a 24-year old Rolla male, who was in their custody. He was transported to the Dent County Jail and incarcerated on the warrant. On Sunday, November 21^st at 3:15 p.m. an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. Investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 45-year old Rolla man for stealing $28 of merchandise. The merchandise was returned to Wal-Mart and he was issued a summons to appear in court on the theft. During the investigation it was learned there was a warrant for his arrest from the Franklin County Sheriff Department.  He was able to post the $40 bond on the warrant and was released. Anyone with any information regarding the counterfeit twenty-dollar bill is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol will participate in Operation C.A.R.E (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) during the Thanksgiving holiday period. As part of this operation, all available officers will be assigned to all Missouri’s roadways to enforce traffic laws, especially those related to drunk driving, speeding, and seat belt use. Troopers will also be assisting motorists as needed. The Patrol will have a presence on the interstate highways as well as on U. S. and secondary highways will give the Patrol a noticeable presence and afford the opportunity to expand the crash and fatality reduction to those corridors. The counting period for the 2010 Thanksgiving holiday weekend is from 6:00 this evening until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 28^th. Motorists are reminded of the Highway Patrol’s Emergency Assistance number 1-800-525-5555 (or *55 on a cellular phone). The emergency assistance number should be used to report traffic crashes, crimes being committed, or other emergencies on Missouri’s highways. When you dial this number anywhere in the state, it rings directly into the closest Patrol headquarters. Weather appears that it may affect driving conditions and you can call the Missouri Weather Condition Hotline toll-free at 1-800-222-6400.

All Dent County Schools, Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV will dismiss early today. William Lynch Elementary will dismiss at 11:15; Upper Elementary will dismiss at 11:20; Junior/Senior High Schools will dismiss at 11:30; and all the rural schools will dismiss at 11:45. Due to Thanksgiving Break all Dent County Schools will be closed on Thursday, November 25^th and Friday, November 26^th. Classes will resume on Monday, November 29^th.  

The Dent County Fire Protection District is again hosting their annual toy drive. The toy drive is for children birth thru age 12. Registration will be Tuesday, November 30^th and Thursday, December 2^nd from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Dent County Fire Protection District Station. Parents or guardians need to bring verification of the child’s age, that the child lives with them, and proof that the child is a Dent County resident (such as utility bill). Only registered children are allowed to participate in the toy drive. The toy pick-up date will be December 21^st. For more information please contact Brad Nash at 729-3250. The Salvation Army Service Unit of Dent County would like to announce that this year’s Christmas kettle campaign is going on now through Friday, December 24^th. The kettles will be located at Wal-Mart, Country Mart, and Dollar General. Counter Kettles will be placed at various locations around Dent County. This year’s goal is $21,000 and with the continuation of a local mail appeal and the hundreds of volunteer hours donated by individuals, businesses, and clubs to ring the bell at the Christmas kettle, the Salvation Army is hopeful that local citizens will support this campaign generously as they have in the past. This year, David Dittman, a Vice-President at the Bank of Salem, will serve as the Honorary Christmas Campaign Chairman and he thanks everyone for their donation on money, time or both during this Christmas season to make it a brighter 2011 for hose less fortunate. The funds raised during this campaign will be used to assist the citizens of Dent County with utility assistance, and prescriptions. The Salvation Army also supplies local school children with backpacks, and provides assistance to families who have lost everything due to a fire. The generosity of the citizens of Dent County will enable the local Salvation Army to continue to meet the needs of those who need assistance in 2011. The Salem Tiger Boys and Girls Basketball seasons will begin Saturday against Northwest High School in Rolla at noon. KSMO will not broadcast these contests.

Michael Dixon scored a game-high 17 points to help 11th-ranked Missouri hold off Wyoming, 72-62, in the Cancun Challenge. Laurence Bowers added 12 points and Kim English 11 for the Tigers (3-0), who will meet La Salle tonight at 8:00 in the championship game of the Riviera Division on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Blues will be in Nashville tonight to face the Predators starting at 7:00. KSMO will air the game around the Mizzou game.

The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a Minor League deal with left-handed reliever Raul Valdes, who spent 2010 with the Mets. Valdes will receive a non-roster invitation to Spring Training. Valdes, 33, went 3-3 with a 4.91 ERA, 56 strikeouts, and 27 walks last season.
