The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting at the hospital library Tuesday evening. Controller Stephanie Wofford reported that the summary of operations for the month of October showed an excess of expenses over revenues of $2,491 for the month. There is currently $1.6 million in CD’s. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor gave the director of nursing report for the month and there were 752 emergency room visits, 195 ambulance runs, 20 surgeries, 452 clinical visits, 306 home health visits, 7,481 lab tests, 21 nuclear med scans, 1,057 radiological procedures, 31 MRI scans, 280 CT Scans, 115 dialysis procedures visits and there were 311 rehabilitation treatments. Pryor then gave the Hospital Auxiliary report. The Auxiliary is working on upcoming fundraisers including their cookbook, which is now available for $8.00, and the Holiday Home Tour on December 2nd. There are currently 5 homes on the tour as well as the ONCRC Trees and Trains Exhibit. Tickets are $6 each and can be purchased at the hospital, area banks and Edward Jones office. The board reviewed the inpatient and emergency room patient satisfaction surveys. There were 124 surveys returned during the July thru September period. All surveys gave the hospital a good or excellent rating. Pryor reported on Physician’s Office Building 3 and that the basement floor has been completed and $162,277 of the $931,500 proposed budget for the project has been spent year to date. He also gave the Chief of Staff report for Dr. Prince.  The medical staff recommended and the board approved extending courtesy staff privileges to podiatrist Dr. Christopher Johnson. Pryor reported that KSMO will air live weekly commercials and monthly board meeting reviews. The board heard a proposal from Sam Collier of Rehab Alliance to be considered as a source to provide rehabilitation services to the hospital. The board took no action at this time.  The election filing for District 1 seat, currently held by Judy Thompson, will begin December 18 and run thru January 22. In the budgeted equipment purchases, the board approved purchasing a Carrier rooftop air conditioner unit with flashing material for the roof for the ER department for $6,929 from Victor Heating and Cooling. In the unbudgeted purchases, accounts payable bought a printer for $112 from CDWG and the board approved purchasing 2 desktop computers for the cardiopulmonary and medical records department for $1,258 from ABS. The board reviewed the renewal cost for the employee health insurance. The hospital is currently self-insured. The current premium from Exposure is $755,644 and the plan renewal will be $709,716, a savings of $46,219. The board approved renewing this insurance policy. The next meeting of the hospital board of directors will be Monday, December 10^th at 5:30 PM at the Holiday Inn Express. The board then went into closed session.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds motorists that wearing a seat belt can save your life. As the holiday season approaches, many Missourians are making plans to travel. Thanksgiving weekend is a time for great food, football, and family. If you will be traveling this holiday, please remember to observe the traffic laws and buckle up. Take the time to make sure your car is in good condition before beginning your trip. It is also important that you are well rested before you start driving. The Patrol will participate in Operation C.A.R.E (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) during this period. As part of this operation, all available officers will be assigned to Missouri’s roadways to enforce traffic laws, especially those related to drunk driving, speeding, and seat belt use. Troopers will also be assisting motorists as needed. The counting period for the 2007 Thanksgiving holiday weekend is from 6 p.m. tonight until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, November 25, 2007.  During the 2006 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, 15 persons were killed and another 581 were injured in 1,387 traffic crashes. These statistics show that one person was killed or injured every 10.3 minutes during last year’s Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Over the past five years, 82 people have been killed and 2,993 have been injured in traffic crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday. Motorists are reminded of the Highway Patrol’s Emergency Assistance number 1-800-525-5555 (or *55 on a cellular phone). The emergency assistance number should be used to report traffic crashes, crimes being committed, or other emergencies on Missouri’s highways. When you dial this number anywhere in the state, it rings directly into the closest Patrol headquarters.

Cody Wofford scored 14 points and Taylor Sirois added 13 more along with capturing eight rebounds as the Salem Tigers rolled past Steelville last night in their season opener, 57-24. Zack Pitchford also hit double figures for Salem with 11 points as Salem built a 21 point halftime lead and cruised from there. Steven Hille netted 10 points for the Cardinals. Salem’s next contest will be against Doniphan in the Farmington Tournament Monday evening at 8:00 at the Farmington High School. That game will NOT be aired on KSMO Radio.

Leo Lyons posted a game-high 23 points while hauling down 11 rebounds as the Missouri Tigers defeated the Maryland Terrapins, 84-70, in the consolation round of the CBE Classic at the SprintCenter. Stefhon Hannah netted 14 points for Missouri (4-1), and Keon Lawrence tallied 12 points. DeMarre Carroll chipped in 11 points for the Tigers. Missouri will face Western Illinois on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 on KSMO Radio.

The Missouri Football Tigers will face Kansas Saturday at 7:00 to determine the Big 12 North Division winner. You can hear the game on KSMO starting at 6:00. Missouri is 10-1 and Kansas is 11-0.

The St. Louis Blues will travel to Detroit tonight to face the Red Wings at 6:30. The Blues have won four straight games. The Blues will then host Vancouver Friday night at 7:30. You can hear both games on KSMO Radio.

Kansas City running back Larry Johnson will not play against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday as he continues to rehab his injured right foot.

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins has been named the National League's Most Valuable Player, as voted by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Rollins garnered 353 points to outdistance Colorado outfielder Matt Holliday by 17 points.

The St. Louis Cardinals signed catcher Jason LaRue to a one-year contract Monday and also signed pitchers Dewon Brazelton and John Wasdin to minor league contracts.

Graveside services for Lora Lee Worley, of Rolla, age 41, were held Tuesday, November 20th at the Hickory Grove Cemetery in St. James. All the arranagments were under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.

Funeral services for Walter Wood of Steelville, age 93, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Crocker Cemetery in Goodland.

Funeral services for Ralph Lee Arl of Eminence, age 77, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Ellington. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Polk Memorial Cemetery.

Funeral services for Fern Hedrick of Steelville, age 87, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be Saturday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. 

Funeral services for Evelyn Hilgedick, of Marshfield, formerly of Salem, age 88, will be held Tuesday, December 4th at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Monday, December 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
