The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of October. During the month, they wrote 28 traffic tickets, 13 warning tickets and one equipment repair order. They served 33 summons to appear in court and two fugitive warrants. The Salem Police Department investigated 18 accidents, one assault, and three reports of driving while intoxicated. The Police Department also investigated five reports of stealing, six reports of property damage, one burglary, four reports of counterfeiting, one report of distributing/selling of marijuana, five reports of disorderly conduct, one report of a missing/runaway juvenile, one report of a suicide/attempt, one report of trespassing, one report of unlawful use of a weapon, and two reports of leaving the scene of an accident. They investigated one report of possession of marijuana, one report of possession of drugs amphetamine and one report of synthetic drugs.  The Salem Police Department conducted two death investigations. The police received 1,529 calls for service during the month, handled 123 walk-ins to the station and redirected 59 calls to the animal control officer. They spent eight hours in court testifying, four hours as court bailiff, and spent 32 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in October included 29 calls for escorts, three 9-1-1 calls, four intoxicated driver investigation calls, three calls for a suspicious person or vehicle, 12 calls for peace disturbances, six ambulance assist calls, 10 calls for alarms sounding, seven calls for fights in progress, eight domestic dispute calls, two calls for an intoxicated pedestrian, two fire calls and four wreckers were needed. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,659 miles during the month of October and they arrested 16 males and six females also during the month.

The Salvation Army Service Unit of Dent County would like to announce that this year’s Christmas kettle campaign will begin on Wednesday, November 24^th and run until Friday, December 24^th. The kettles will be located at Wal-Mart, Country Mart, and Dollar General. Counter Kettles will be placed at various locations around Dent County. This year’s goal is $21,000, and with the continuation of a local mail appeal and the hundreds of volunteer hours donated by individuals, businesses, and clubs to ring the bell at the Christmas kettle. The Salvation Army is hopeful that local citizens will support this campaign generously as they have in the past. This year the Bank of Salem Vice President, David Dittman, will serve as the Honorary Christmas Campaign Chairman and proclaims thanks to everyone for their donation of money, time, or both during the Christmas season to help make a brighter 2011 for those less fortunate. The funds raised during this campaign will be used to assist the citizens of Dent County with utility assistance, and prescriptions. The Salvation Army also supplies local school children with backpacks, and provides assistance to families who have lost everything due to a fire. The generosity of the citizens of Dent County will enable the local Salvation Army to continue to meet the needs of those who need assistance in 2011. Eleven local volunteers, including two youth, who have served the Meramec Region will be honored for their community service efforts on Tuesday, November 9^th, during Meramec Regional Planning Commission’s 2010 Annual Dinner celebration at Linn State Technical College in Linn. The event will be held in the college’s new 84,000 square feet state-of-the-art Vehicle and Power Center. Those to be recognized by MRPC for community contributions and volunteer efforts include: Betty Frink of Steelville, nominated by Franky Todd, at large commissioner for seniors; Jay Anderson of Salem, nominated by Salem Mayor Gary Brown; Adam Birdsong of Rolla, nominated by Doolittle Mayor Paul Smith; Jim and Diane Boulware of Salem, nominated by Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles; and in the youth category, Lane Howard of Lecoma, nominated by Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles. The Eugene E. Northern award, the highest honor given by MRPC for volunteerism and community service, will also be named at the dinner. The public is invited to attend. The evening will begin with a reception from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., featuring a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres, open bar and exhibits. Dinner will be from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and will be prepared by Argyle Catering. The program and awards presentation will follow the dinner and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. David Kerr, director of the Missouri Department of Economic Development, will be the guest speaker. An accident happened in Dent County on Route DD about five miles west of Salem Wednesday night at 8:30. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Buick LeSabre driven northbound by 65-year old John K. Ingram of Salem, was struck in the windshield by a deer that was knocked into the northbound lane by a southbound vehicle. Ingram suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Buick sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

Time changes this weekend. It is that time of year to “fall back” an hour. Either set your clock back an hour Saturday night before going to bed or first thing Sunday morning when you get up.

The Dent County Schools, Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV, will be closed on Friday, November 5^th due to a Teacher Professional Development Day. Classes will resume on Monday, November 8^th.
