The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning for their regular meeting. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in the report on the CART fund receipts for October. She said the county received $54,443.66 this month and so far this year, the county has received $534,321.89 which is up $20,468.87 over the same time period as last year. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4122, 4124, 4126, 41250, 4153, 4157 and 5380 while materials would be added to and ditch work done on county road 6635. Purcell stated brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5610 and said that illegal dumping continues to be a problem on many county roads. If the public sees anyone illegally dumping trash or other articles along county roads, please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Office at 729-3241. If caught, those persons would be prosecuted. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported grading would be done on Dent County Road 2210 while materials would be added to and grading done on county road 3330. Larson went on to say that a crossover pipe is being installed on Dent County Road 4290 and materials would be added to that road. He indicated that brush would be cut on county road 2540, crews will be working on truck #116 and road materials would be added to three bus turnarounds. Larson reported work on the new bridge on Dent County Road 3210 is curing and the contractors would be asphalting the bridge approaches today. The commission hopes to have the bridge open next week. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended a Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting in St. James Thursday. He also said Joe Martin and Darrell Decker with the county’s insurance consortium would be at the meeting on October 30th at 11:00. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said absentee voting continues until November 3rd at 5:00, the last day to mail out a ballot would be Wednesday, October 29th, and that her office would be open on Saturday, November 1st from 8:00 in the morning until noon. She said she would be testing the voting equipment on Tuesday, October 28th at 11:00 at her office. At the last meeting, the commission took phone bids for fuel for the road and bridge department. The lowest bid for diesel came in at $2.95 a gallon from MFA, and the lowest bid for unleaded gas came from Phil-Mart at $2.60 a gallon and the commission approved those bids. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

Congressman Jason Smith is seeking applications for nomination to the U.S. service academies. Individuals interested in a nomination to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy should submit applications no later than October 31. Individuals interested in a nomination from Congressman Smith for admission to a service academy must be least 17-years old, must be a U.S. citizen, must be a resident of Missouri’s 8th Congressional District, must be unmarried, not pregnant and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents; and must meet the medical, physical and academic requirements of the academy. Students interested in a nomination should contact Congressman Smith’s Academy Coordinator Heather Peugh at 417-255-1515.

The public is invited to enjoy a “Haunting in the Mill” on Saturday, Oct. 25. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the event includes three family-friendly tours at 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Visitors will get to experience a unique night-time tour of the historic Montauk Mill, located across the road from the picnic shelter. Volunteers and park staff, dressed in historical costumes, will help history come to life. The first 80 guests will be allowed in for each tour, which is offered free of charge. Visitors are encouraged to wear warm clothes while they wait outside for the tour. Hot chocolate and an old-fashioned treats will be provided to children. Montauk State Park is located 22 miles southwest of Salem on Highway 119 in Dent County. For more information about the event, call the park directly at 573-548-2201. The 2014 Trees and Trains Exhibit will again be at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center at 202 South Main Street in Salem and will run from November 24th through December 24th this year. The Salem Football Tigers will be at St. James for the first round of District play tonight starting at 7:00. St. James edged out Salem by .36 points in the MSHSAA system to host this game. Ryan Miller had 31 saves against his former club as the Vancouver Canucks beat the St. Louis Blues 4-1 on Thursday. Kevin Shattenkirk scored the lone goal for the St. Louis, which got 19 saves from Jake Allen in defeat. The Blues will play the Chicago Blackhawks tomorrow night at 7:00. The Missouri Football Tigers host Vanderbilt tomorrow starting at 3:00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 1:00. Missouri is 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the SEC.

The St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs will square off Sunday in KC starting at noon. St. Louis is 2-4 on the year while the Chiefs have a record of 3-3.

The World Series will continue tonight in San Francisco at AT&T Park. Veteran Tim Hudson will start Game 3 for San Francisco in his first-ever World Series appearance. Fellow right-hander Jeremy Guthrie is scheduled to pitch for the Royals who evened the series with their win on Thursday night, 7-2. The series is tied at 1-1.

Funeral services for Dot Wisdom, age 80, will be held at 11:00 Monday morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday night from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.

Funeral services for Alma Marie Steen of Salem, age 91, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Rolla Cemetery.

Funeral services for Virginia Lee Stewart of Salem, age 80, will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Empire Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Empire Cemetery.

Funeral services for Cecil King of Rolla, age 92, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens.
