Enjoy an evening of spooky stories or learn about creatures of the night in Missouri state parks and historic sites. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the event is open to the public. On Saturday, October 27
th, Montauk State Park near Salem will be hosting “A Haunting at the Montauk Mill.” The past will come to life at the old Montauk gristmill. Beginning at 6:30 pm, you can see bats, hear voices and see images of ghosts from the past. Hear lingering voices of Ozark pioneers and see mysteries of the deep. In closed session last Thursday, the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors extended Administrator Dennis Pryor’s contract for four more years after his review. The board also awarded a nursing scholarship of $3,000 to Kim Blankenship to complete her education. Blankenship currently works in the surgery department at the hospital. In lieu of receiving the scholarship, Blankenship agrees to stay and work at the Salem Hospital for a specified length of time. The board meeting then adjourned.
The Agape Home's first annual Homeless Awareness Conference will be held tonight at 6:00 at the New Harmony Church on Highway 32 West and will focus on ways to help end homelessness and how the community can help. According to Agape Home Resident Director Bobbie Culver, about 500 invitations have been sent. The conference will feature a video presentation before Agape Home Board President Rod Garn will speak. Now in it’s 18th year, the Agape Home is a temporary shelter located at 304 West Fifth St. in Salem. The goal of the home is to help people become established, productive citizens in their community.
The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold an open-house public meeting to display a reasonable range of alternative highway alignments that are part of an environmental and location study for Highway 63 through Osage, Maries, and Phelps Counties. The meeting in our area is tonight at the Vienna Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 206 Sixth Street. The meeting will run from 4 pm to 7 pm, and accessibility accommodations will be available. MoDOT developed the reasonable range of alternative alignments after evaluating technical, cultural, and environmental data as well as public comment from previous meetings. The reasonable range of alternatives narrows the selection of highway alignments from the preliminary range originally presented during the previous public meetings in spring 2007. Those who are interested in reviewing the alignments or sharing their ideas about the study can attend the meeting. No formal presentations will be made but MoDOT employees will be available to discuss the study and answer questions. MoDOT is conducting the study to evaluate potential future transportation needs along the 47-mile stretch of Highway 63 from ½ mile south of the Highway 50/63 junction to just north of Rolla. The study is an objective process to help determine what actions, if any, are needed to best serve the transportation needs of the area. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway Program is going wild. The program, which involves volunteers picking up trash along state highways, is now offering groups the option of adopting roadsides solely to plant Missouri wildflowers. While some groups have been planting flowers, trees and shrubs all along as part of their beautification efforts, this new option will encourage the growth of wildflowers native to Missouri, such as coreopsis and purple coneflowers. MoDOT is joining with Grow Native, a program sponsored by the departments of Conservation and Agriculture, on the effort. The goal of the Adopt-A-Highway program is to keep our roadsides clean and attractive and what better way to do that than to plant native wildflowers along the way. This option takes the program one step further and hopefully will spur new adopters to join the cause. Over the program’s 20-year history, more than 100,000 volunteers have picked up thousands of bags of litter, mowed hundreds of roadside miles and planted countless flowers, shrubs and trees. Currently, there are 3,772 groups in the program that have adopted 5,281 highway miles. If MoDOT had to do the work of these volunteers, it would cost about $1 million a year and keep their maintenance staff from doing other needed work. MoDOT recognizes the helpers by posting a sign with the group’s name at each end of the adopted highway section. Because MoDOT is responsible for maintaining 385,000 acres of roadsides along 32,000 highway miles, the agency is always looking for additional adopters. Missourians are challenged to double the current number of adopted miles and make Missouri an even cleaner, more beautiful state. In Class 3 All-Region Volleyball selections, Salem’s Allison Jones was named to the 1st Team while Hannah Kettner was named to the second team. St. James had four girls named to the All-Region 2nd team with Ashley Lorts, Kate Rapp, Tiffany Davis and Erica Rieken being selected. Sarah Naji of St. James was added to the Honorable Mention team. In Class 2 All-Region selections, Brittney Kimrey and Jordan Hammon of Licking were selected to the 2nd team. Congratulations to all these girls on their fine achievements.
The St. Louis Blues will be back on the road tonight as they travel to Columbus to face the Blue Jackets starting at 6:00 this evening. The Blues have won five of their first seven games this year. You can hear the contest on KSMO Radio.
Josh Beckett struck out nine over seven innings and the Red Sox banged out 17 hits in a 13-1 rout of the Colorado Rockies in Game 1 of the World Series. The Rockies entered a rainy Fenway Park with 10 straight wins but that all went out the window in the first inning, the Red Sox scored three times and Colorado never recovered. David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez each had three hits and two RBI. Game 2 of the best-of-seven set is Thursday night at Fenway Park with rookie Ubaldo Jimenez taking the mound for the Rockies. Curt Schilling, with a 10-2 career postseason mark, pitches for Boston.

A Memorial Mass for Dean A. Black, age 65, who passed away on September 14, 2007, will be held on Saturday, October 27th at 11:00 at the Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic Church in St. Louis. Interment will be Sunday, October 28th at 1:00 at the Mt. Herman Cemetery with Ken Fiebelman officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for James Dale Barton, age 63, of Rolla, are incomplete at this but under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
