An accident occurred at 2:50 early Wednesday morning, October 13^th on Highway 68 about 23 mile south of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Chevrolet driven by 22-year old Brooke Bergen of Salem was traveling northbound on Highway 68, when she failed to negotiate a right curve, ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a tree and then overturned. Bergen suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Hospital by ambulance. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and removed from the scene by Spurgeon’ s Wrecker.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving an active warrant, leaving the scene of an accident, property damage a disturbance and a self-inflicted gunshot wound. On Friday, October 8^th, an officer responded to a call from the Richmond Heights Police Department in reference to a 25-year old St. Louis man whom the City of Salem held an active warrant for his arrest. The original charge was possession of marijuana. He was taken back to Salem and was incarcerated pending the posting of his bond or a court appearance. On Saturday, October 9^th at 11:30 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Wal-Mart parking lot in reference to a leaving the scene accident. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem man for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident and for having no insurance. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. At 4:30 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 1800 block of South Oak in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown had inflicted deep scratches in the side of the victim’s 2000 Dodge Neon. That night at 10:45, an officer responded to the 1000 block of Highway 19 South in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 20-year old Salem woman, a 21-year old Salem woman and a 25-year old Salem woman for disorderly conduct. Each was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Sunday, October 10^th at 6:00 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 1100 block of South Wines in reference to a self-inflicted wound to a 49-year old Salem man. The investigation of the report led to the detention of the subject who was later transferred to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains. Anyone with information on the property damage report, which is still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police at 729-4242.

A new exhibit, “Notable Folks” is now on display at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center.  You can learn who from Salem helped develop the atomic bomb, who has written the most novels, who from Dent County was a “flying ace” pilot in World War II. How did the Jubiliares begin and who was with the group? How did the Dillards end up on the “Andy Griffith Show? This is only a sample of the learning experience available with this exhibit. It features people who have contributed to the local area and to the world in various ways.  Plan to stay awhile when you come.  There are many stories to read. The ONCRC is open Monday thru Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Troop I, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded two traffic fatalities during the month of August 2010. This is the same as August 2009. There were 208 accidents with 117 injuries and two fatalities for August 2009 compared to 189 accidents with 97 injuries and two fatalities for August 2010. The total fatalities at the end of August were 16, compared to 13 for the same time period as last year. Crawford County reported 35 accidents with 18 injuries; Dent County reported 15 accidents with seven injuries and two fatalities, while Laclede County reported 47 accidents with 30 injuries. Other county reports for August 2010 were Maries County with six accidents and six injuries, Phelps County recorded 45 accidents with 19 injuries and Pulaski County recorded 41 accidents with 17 injuries.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce board is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at this year’s awards banquet. The banquet and auction will be held on Thursday, November 4^th beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Salem City Hall. Awards will be given in six categories: Business of the Year, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Customer Service Award, Citizen of the Decade and Youth Visionary Award.   Criteria/eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber office, 200 S. Main St. Nominations will be accepted through today. Completed nominations can be mailed, faxed or brought to the Chamber office. Banquet tickets can be purchased for the evening’s festivities at the Chamber office for $20 each.  Need further information - please call Chamber Director Genie at 729-6900.

The Ozark Rivers Audubon will meet on Thursday, October 14^th at 7:00 pm. "Tanager Trails Nature Photographs" by Connie Roberts will open the program, followed by a discussion of the future of Tanager Trails.  The meeting will be at the Eugene Northern Community Center at 400 West 4th Street in Rolla, one block north of the Phelps County Courthouse. Refreshments are provided, and all meetings are free and open to the public. For more information, please call 364-8567.

The 12th Annual Octoberfest sponsored by the Bunker Volunteer Fire Department will be held this Saturday on Main Street in Bunker. The parade lineup starts at 9 AM and the theme this year is “Decades.” Booths will be set up from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM with numerous events being held through out the day.  There will be a car show from 9;00 AM until 2:00 PM with a $10 entry fee. New this year will be a Quilt Exhibit at the First Baptist Church on Main Street from 9:00 AM until 2:00. The winners of the Cutest Baby Contest will be announced at 1:00. Also at Octoberfest will be numerous kids’ games and a silent auction as well as the fire department’s traditional pork steak Bar-B-Cue. Then at 6:00, an evening concert will be held as there are four bands scheduled to perform: Crimson Gold, the Harpers, Logan Creek Band and New Highway. There is an admission charge for the concert and there will be refreshments available. Octoberfest is the Bunker Fire Department's annual fund-raiser.
