Governor Jay Nixon has
appointed 36 year-old Salem attorney Brandi L. Baird as prosecuting attorney for Dent County. The position became vacant after the resignation of Jessica Sparks. Baird is an attorney with the Nanci R. Wisdom Law Firm in Salem. Her practice has included cases in family law, criminal law, probate, business law and real estate law. Baird previously served as legislative and constituent director for the office of the Speaker of the House for the Missouri General Assembly. She is a 2000 graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and received her undergraduate degree in criminal justice administration from the University of Central Missouri. Baird, a sixth-generation resident of Dent County, is married to Brandon Schloemer. They have one son, Maxton.
The 2009 Homecoming Queen is Jessica Dean, the daughter of Deanna and Eugene Dean of Salem. She was crowned prior to the Friday night football game against Houston. Her court consisted of sophomore Bailey Barnes, junior Samantha Riley, and seniors Houlie Ibrahim and Janelle Conway.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce October Chamber Membership meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 14th at the Salem TCRC beginning at noon. The Salem Sesquicentennial Planning Committee will present some ideas and plans that have been discussed in previous meetings. This meeting is designed to inform and involve local area businesses in the planning of Salem’s 150th birthday celebration that will take place during 2010. The cost for lunch for the meeting is $8.00 per person and those planning on attending are asked to RSVP by today to be included in the lunch by calling the Chamber of Commerce at 729-6900.
The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Sunday, October 4th the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to the B & K junction on Highway 19 South due to a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival firefighters assisted the Salem ambulance with one patient. A total of nine firefighters responded to the call and had the scene under control at 1:03 in the afternoon.
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will perform shoulder repairs on Highway 32 in Dent County, between Route MM and Highway 72, beginning Tuesday, October 13th. Weather permitting, crews and equipment will be on the roadway between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Shoulder repair work involves removing ruts, low areas and high spots on the shoulders. While performing this function, crews and equipment are located directly on or near the roadway. Motorists are urged to exercise caution when moving through the work zone. Senator Frank Barnitz announced that District Legislative Assistant Wilma Rowden of Vienna would continue her listening posts in October at locations throughout the 16th Senate District. Rowden will be at the Phelps County courthouse in Rolla on Thursday, October 15th from 9:00 to 11:00 am. Those who cannot make it to the listening posts can contact Rowden in the district office by calling (573) 201-6207.

The Salem Tiger football team beat the Houston Tigers Friday, 34-14, in the last SCA game of the year. Andy Kissir rushed for 129 yards and scored twice, and Ty Floyd added 109 yards with three scores. The Tigers finished with a 3-3 SCA record and are now 4-3 on the year. They will start district play this Friday as they host the Owensville Dutchmen.
Vicente Padilla's first playoff start was one to remember, as the right-hander gave the Dodgers seven shutout innings, and Los Angeles advanced to the National League Championship Series for the second straight year with a 5-1 victory over St. Louis at Busch Stadium on Saturday. Padilla allowed four hits and a walk while fanning four for the Dodgers, who swept the best- of-five series, 3-0. Albert Pujols had two hits in the game and finished 3-for-10 in the series with no extra-base hits and one run driven in, as the NL Central champion Cardinals lost only their second LDS series in eight attempts. Joel Pineiro (0-1) didn't fare as well as his counterpart in his first postseason start, allowing four runs on seven hits in just four innings.
The St. Louis Blues dropped their second straight home game as they lost 2-1 to the Los Angeles Kings. Alex Steen had the lone goal for the Blues, while Chris Mason turned aside 24 shots. They will in Phoenix Thursday night.
Brett Favre threw a touchdown pass and Adrian Peterson added two rushing scores, as the Minnesota Vikings defeated the lowly St. Louis Rams, 38-10, at the Edward Jones Dome. Kyle Boller threw for 209 yards and one interception on 20-of-31 attempts for the Rams (0-5), who have lost 15 straight games dating back to last season. Marc Bulger entered in the fourth quarter and completed all seven passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. Steven Jackson rushed for 84 yards on 21 carries in defeat.
Miles Austin had career day in his first NFL start, catching 10 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning, 60-yard TD catch in overtime, as the Dallas Cowboys outlasted the lowly Kansas City Chiefs, 26-20, in Week 5 at Arrowhead Stadium. Matt Cassel connected on 23-of-41 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns for the Chiefs (0-5), who have lost 28 of their last 30 games. Dwayne Bowe had five catches for 74 yards and a score in defeat.
