Salem Police Department released their reports involving traffic stops. On September 27^th at 12:57 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of an 18-year old Manchester male for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and a 17-year old Ballwin male for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and a minor in possession of intoxicants. Both were incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On September 28^th at 6:04 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 21-year old Lawrence male for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was given a date to appear in court and released on bond. At 9:00 the same evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to arrest of a 19-year old Stover male for possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Then at 11:01 that evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 30-year old Granite City, Illinois male for possession of marijuana. He was given a date to appear in court and released on bond. On October 1^st at 10:59 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 30-year old Salem male for driving while drugged. He was issued a summons for careless and imprudent driving and released pending lab results. The Dent County Health Center will be holding a flu clinic on Thursday, October 11^th at the Salem Freedom Activity Center from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Everyone is eligible and there will be a $20 charge. The Health Center will bill Medicare of Medicaid; however, you MUST bring your card with you. Pregnant women MUST bring a doctors order to receive the vaccine. Law enforcement agencies across Missouri are looking for teens that aren’t buckled up now through 21st as part of a special effort to encourage seat belt use among young people. While a statewide survey released in September showed more teens are buckling their seat belts than ever before -- 61 percent in 2007 compared to 58 percent in 2006 -- the number is still well below the 77 percent usage rate for all Missourians. Unfortunately, hundreds of Missouri teens are killed or injured every year in traffic crashes and the large majority of those killed are not wearing a seat belt. Of the 153 teens killed in traffic crashes in 2006, 73 percent were not buckled up. Missouri’s Graduated Driver License law requires safety belt use for teens and their passengers. The law enforcement crackdown is coupled with several statewide projects that also focus on teen seat belt use. Battle of the Belt is a high school seat belt challenge that runs through the end of the year. More than 100 schools are expected to participate with students performing surprise seat belt checks at their high school and then reaching out to members of the student body with an educational campaign on the importance of seat belt use. An education/advertising campaign featuring the Never Made It theme began in mid-September. It focuses on media that reaches teens: radio, cable television and the Internet. The campaign culminates October 15th thru 21st; a week designated as National Teen Driver Safety Week. A greater amount of more visible signs about Missouri’s seat belt law will be installed as a reminder to both drivers and passengers to buckle up.

An accident occurred Saturday afternoon, October 6^th at 4:46 at the intersection of Iron and Second Streets in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a maroon 1994 Honda Accord driven by Scott Eiler of Troy was southbound on Iron Street approaching Second Street. A maroon Mongoose bicycle driven by Jousha Hoffman of Salem and owned by Bradley Beyer of Salem was eastbound on Second Street approaching Iron. The Mongoose was not equipped with brakes and the driver attempted to stop by dragging his foot. As the Mongoose continued, failing to stop at the stop sign, the Mongoose made contact with the Honda. Due to the impact, Hoffman was ejected from the bicycle. No injuries were reported. Both vehicles sustained minor damage.

The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History, located at the intersection of North Hickory and East Rolla Road in Salem, will host an event on Friday, October 12^th at beginning 7:00 pm. Don Kurz a nature photographer and writer will present the program “Special Places in the Ozarks for Fall Colors”. He will show slides and discuss the places in Missouri and Arkansas where you can find vivid colors of fall. The program is appropriate for the whole family and light snacks will be provided. The cost is $5 per person or $10 for the whole family. Phone reservations are requested. Call the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History at 729-3400. These programs are made possible in part by a grant from the LAD Foundation.

During the Department of Conservation Commission meeting held the end of September, the Commission approved division recommendations to advertise and sell an estimated 1,453,200 board feet of timber on the Riverside CA in Reynolds County. The Commission also approved division recommendations to advertise and sell an estimated 1,632,624 board feet of timber on the Angeline CA in Shannon County, and they accepted a donation of 1.2 acres in Dent County as an addition to Shawnee Mac Lakes CA.

A school bus has overturned in southeast Missouri sending 32 people to the hospital with injuries. The bus was carrying the school volleyball team from Viburnum to a game in Lesterville. Most of the injuries were minor and none of them were thought to be life threatening. The accident happened just before 5:00 near Oates in Reynolds County. The Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

On Monday, the Salem JV Football Team dropped a 22-6 decision to Mountain Grove. Salem’s only touchdown came on a nine-yard pass from Ashton Karr to Jake Schafer. Salem had other opportunities to score with a drive stalling on Mountain Grove 20 and failed to convert a 4^th down and 3 in Mountain Grove territory. Salem is now 2-2 and will finish up the JV season with a game Monday night against St. Francis Borgia at Salem.

The St. Louis Blues will have their home opener tonight at 7:30 at the Scottrade Center against the Nashville Predators. The Blues are coming off a 1-1 season opening road trip. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Funeral Service for Helen Lorraine Street of St. Louis, formerly of Steelville, age 76, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will also be Thursday at 10:00 am until time of service. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Graveside services for Toni "Patricia" Hall of Tucson, Arizona, age 50, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Boss Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.

Funeral services for Raymond D. Fannon of Owensville, age 86, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the First Assembly of God Church in Owensville. Visitation will also be Saturday from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the First Assembly of God Church in Owensville.
