Mike Fiaoni from the Missouri Department of Conservation reports that dog traps have now been set for the wild dogs that have been roaming loose at Shawnee Mac Lake. The traps are intended to capture the stray dogs and remove them from the area. These strays have not had distemper or rabies shots and may have mange. These animals can be dangerous to humans and as well as other animals. Fiaoni reports that the traps will be monitored and it is a violation to tamper with the traps, release dogs that have been trapped or to provide food for the wild dogs. Violators will receive a citation. Fiaoni also says that citizens that like to walk their dogs in the Shawnee Mac area are reminded to keep your animals on a leash and not let them roam free. This also is a violation that can result in a citation. If you have any questions regarding the traps or the wild dogs at the Shawnee Mac Lake can call Fiaoni at 729-3182.

In appreciation for dedicated service to the Dent County Sheriff’s Department from April 2004 to May 2008, on Tuesday, September 16^th, Dent County Sheriff Bob Wofford awarded Deputy
Matthew Pappert a set of silver spurs. In keeping with tradition, the Silver Spurs are awarded to only a deserving few. The tradition has its roots in Knighthood, where the awarding of Silver Spurs symbolized entry into a special group of experienced and brave warriors. Deputy Pappert demonstrated that he had reached a level of experience and skill usually described by the rank of senior patrolman/Deputy. His untiring efforts and dedication to duty resulted in a 67% solve rate in the 263 cases he handled. Deputy Pappert is the son of Carl and Sharon Pappert of Salem and is now an officer with the Glendale Police Department.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage, and disturbances. On September 13^th, 2008 at 8:40 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 700 block of South Carty in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed unknown persons had broken the back glass from a 1990 Chevy Corsica. On September 13^th, 2008 at 10:00 that night, an officer was sent to the area of Truman and Water Streets in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 20-year-old Salem male for disorderly conduct and a minor in possession of intoxicants. He was issued summons to appear in court and released. On September 15^th at 12:45 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the Salem High School reference to a disturbance. The investigation led to the arrest of a 17-year-old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding the property damage, which is still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their regular monthly meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00 pm. At the meeting, Administrator Pryor will address the auxiliary report, hospital activity calendar, give a legislative update and the employee commitment to health challenge. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will then give the summary of operations and statistic reports for August and the nursing services and ancillary service reports followed by the Chief of Staff report. In old business there will be a physician office building report, and a strategic planning update. The Board will address the statewide hospital employee health insurance consortium, the Missouri Enterprise and the annual bylaw review. In new business the Board will discuss hospital purchases. The Board may then vote to go into closed session. The regular meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their regular monthly meeting at the district administrative office boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm tonight. Superintendent Steve Bryant will address the summer school results summary, professional development in-service(s) and give a bond issue update. In new business, the Board will discuss the CIA-Look Who’s Teaching Outside the Bowl, and hear program evaluations on transportation, safety and co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Also in new business the Board will approve the English Learners Language program/plan and bus routes. The Board will then address the preschool program research and information, the Salem R-80 school foundation, BOE committee assignments and resignations. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel and discipline. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will host Steelville today at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Field. Salem enters the game with a 3-5 record.

The Lady Tigers have announced that instead of playing West Plains on September 23^rd, they will face Thayer. The game with West Plains has been rescheduled for October 3^rd.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at licking tonight to face the Lady Wildcats. JV action begins at 600 with the varsity match to follow.

Andy Phillips, Jay Bruce and Paul Janish each homered to back Aaron Harang's first shutout of the season as the Cincinnati Reds squashed the slumping Cardinals, 3-0 in the second tilt of a three-game set. Todd Wellemeyer (12-8) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts in six innings on the mound, but lost for the fourth time in five starts. Felipe Lopez had two of the Cards' six hits, as St. Louis dropped its seventh straight. The Cards will try tobreak the losing streak starting at 5:50 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Gil Meche hurled seven solid innings as Kansas City downed Seattle, 5-2, at Kauffman Stadium. Meche (12-11) surrendered just two runs on six hits while walking three and striking out seven for the Royals, who have won six straight contests. Ron Mahay, Ramon Ramirez and Joakim Soria combined to finish things from there. Soria earned his 40th save with a perfect ninth. Ryan Shealy homered and Jose Guillen added a two-run single for Kansas City. Kansas City has won six of its eight matchups with the Mariners this season, including five of the six tests played at Kauffman Stadium. The two teams play again tonight.

Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards announced that Tyler Thigpen would start at quarterback for the game on Sunday against Atlanta.

Thigpen came in for Damon Huard last week and hit 14-of-33 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown and one interception in a 23-8 loss to the Oakland Raiders. This marks the third starting quarterback this season for Kansas City. In Week 1, Brodie Croyle started the game against New England, but left the contest with a separated shoulder. Huard started last week's contest, but was later replaced by Thigpen.
