An accident occurred at 3:50 Monday afternoon in Dent County on Highway HH about a mile south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 28-year old Jamie Hobson of Salem was driving a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser north when the vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway, returned to the roadway, and began skidding. The vehicle then again traveled off the left side of the road and struck a tree. Jamie Hobson suffered serious injuries and was flown by Air Evac to Mercy in Creve Coeur. Three children from Salem, 9-year old Aiden Hobson, 8-year old Connor Hobson, and 7-year old Jocelyn Hobson, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Jamie Hobson was the only one not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chrysler sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported materials would be added to and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5150 and 6633, while only grading would be done on county roads 5650 and 6660. Purcell stated brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5480. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2580, 2610, 3020 and 3150, while materials would be added to county road 2330. Larson stated brush would be cut on county roads 2200 and 2360 and a man would be working on truck #68. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported on the Public Housing Authority meeting he attended Thursday in St. James where the board reviewed the housing assistance program. He said Dent County averages about 85 housing units per month and that comes to about $25,000 every month for HUD assistance. Skiles indicated that Crawford County has the most people in the program with 210 units every month. He did say the money the PHA anticipated losing just over a year ago that would force them to use reserves causing them to freeze all applications, was reinstated so that no one had to go off the program. He wanted to remind anyone that is on the HUD program to pay attention to the terms and conditions of your agreement, as you must abide by those conditions or possibly lose your assistance temporarily or permanently. Skiles said the External Relations Committee finalized all the plans for the MRPC Annual Awards Dinner at Camp Mahiska south of Bourbon on November 13th. He stated Chris Mathis was nominated from Dent County and he was approved to receive an area volunteer award for his work with the Farmer’s Market. Skiles also told of the presentation by Ivry Karometros from the Department of Economic Development about the program “Export Missouri” where they can help manufacturers who have products they would like to sell overseas. He said the MRPC also agreed to send a letter of opposition to the EPA’s position on the use of coal to produce electricity. On Friday, Skiles attended the scoring of the applications for the Homeland Security Grants for the total available funds of about $100,000. Skiles said there were no applications from Dent County. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

Lorenzo Cain's infield single in the bottom of the ninth capped a two-run rally with two outs and the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox, 4-3, in the opener of a three-game set. Mike Moustakas doubled with one out and was replaced on second by Jarrod Dyson. With Nori Aoki batting, Dyson stole third and Jake Petricka uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Dyson to continue to home, tying the game at 3-3. Aoki, who went 4-for-4 on the evening, proceeded to rip a double inside the third-base line to keep the rally going. Pinch-runner Terrance Gore came on for Aoki and took third as Cain's single was chopped over Petricka's head and raced home to score the winning run as Alexei Ramirez had trouble with the ball behind second.
