The Salem Lady Volleyball Varsity Tigers edged Owensville Thursday night in a close match with Salem winning the first game, 25-16; Owensville taking the second game, 19-25; and Salem won the third game, 27-25. The varsity is now 2-2 on the year. The JV lost in two straight, 25-20 and 25-5. The Lady Tigers will at be West Plains Monday night at 6:00.

Colby Rasmus went 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four RBI as St. Louis dominated Atlanta, 11-4, in the opener of a four-game set. Skip Schumaker went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and two runs scored while Brendan Ryan added two hits, two RBI and two runs scored for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright (18-10) bounced back from a rough first inning to get the win as he was charged with three runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts over eight innings. With the win and Cincinnati's loss to Colorado on Thursday, the Cardinals trimmed their deficit in the NL Central to five games. The Cards and Braves play again tonight. The St. Louis Rams open their regular season at home Sunday afternoon against the Arizona Cardinals, while the Kansas City Chiefs will wait until Monday night to open their season when they host the San Diego Chargers.

University of Missouri Director of Athletics Mike Alden has been appointed Chair of the NCAA Leadership Council. Athletic Director at Mizzou since 1998, Alden was a member of the Leadership Council last year and was elevated to his new role for the 2010-11 academic year. The Leadership Council, which boasts representatives from 31 Division I conferences, identifies important issues surrounding the future of the NCAA. It also provides oversight to several committees including Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee, the Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the Committee on Women's Athletics and all NCAA cabinets.
