An accident occurred at 9:45 Friday morning in Dent County on Route C about three miles north of Lenox that took the life of a Licking woman. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2001 Chrysler Van driven by 33-year old Kimberely Samel went off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, and ran off the left side of the roadway. The van overturned several times, ejecting Samel, before coming to rest in a field. Samel was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and pronounced dead after arrival by Dr. Ann Delanois. She wasn’t wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chrysler Van was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident happened Saturday morning at 1:10 in Dent County on Highway 32 about seven miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Chevrolet 2500 driven by 27-year old Charles Shoemake of Steelville was traveling westbound when Shoemake drove off the right side of the roadway and the truck became airborne over a culvert. The Chevy truck struck the embankment and overturned ejecting Shoemake from the vehicle. Shoemake suffered serious injuries and was life-flighted to St. Johns Hospital in Creve Coeur by Air Evac. Shoemake was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The vehicle was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident occurred at 11:00 Sunday night in Dent County on Highway 32 about four miles west of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1996 Suzuki Sidekick driven by 45- year old Nancy Igou of Salem, traveled off the right side of the road and struck a fence and then three trees. Igou suffered moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She wasn’t wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Suzuki Sidekick sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident occurred at 2:15 Monday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 19 about two miles south of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1993 Ford Taurus driven by 53-year old Toby Westerman of Salem went off the right side of the roadway, struck a embankment and fence, and then struck a storage building. Westerman suffered moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Taurus sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their regular meeting tonight at 7:00 at the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, the board will hear bids from banks on interest rates on a two-year lease/purchase proposal for $45,890, bids on hot mix asphalt, bids on a 22 kw generator for the police department, and bids on the sale of 3,980 pounds of scrap coated copper wire. After the consent agenda, the board will discuss the issuance of a trailer court license to the R & C Family Mobile Home Park. After Mayor Gary Brown gives the Director of Public Works report, the board will hear and discuss two bills. Bill #3208 would create an ordinance for the construction of a sidewalk along Route J from the Salem City Park to the hiking and biking trail with the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission, and Bill #3209 that would approve a settlement with T-Mobile. The board will also discuss committee appointments, the LAGERS annual meeting representative, as well as the existing pole agreements and franchise fees. The meeting tonight is open to the public.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and a review of the minutes from the previous meeting, the Board will discuss the payment of bills. There will be a budget review of the 2011 budget and also a discussion of investments. There will then be a calendar review and the monthly reimbursement report. In new business, there will be a review of items from the Directors training and the start of the chief’s yearly evaluation. Chief Brad Nash will then update the Board on the guttering and garage doors at the station and also give a progress on the inventory list. The Board will then set their monthly meeting for October 5th at the station. The regular monthly meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors is open to the public.

Johnnie Boyd and Ben Adams each scored two touchdowns as the Salem Tigers shutout the Houston Tigers Friday night, 45-0. Ryan Smith ran the ball 4 times for 101 yards and Junior Rictor scored on a 53 yard run for Salem who is now 1-1 overall and in the SCA. Salem will face Mountain View-Liberty this Friday night.

Last week in YWT, we incorrectly reported that the Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers beat Pacific in varsity and JV action. The Tigers lost both matches to Pacific. We apologize for the error.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host the Eminence Lady Red Wings tonight starting with the JV action at 6:00 followed by the varsity match.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will host Houston today at 4:30 at the Salem City Park Fields. Salem enters the game with a 1-5 record and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Blaine Gabbert threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns to lift the Missouri Tigers over the Illinois Fighting Illini, 23-13, in a non-conference clash at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. Gabbert connected on 34-of-48 pass attempts for Missouri (1-0), which went 8-5 last season. T.J. Moe hauled in 13 passes for 101 yards and a score, while Michael Egnew had 10 catches that went for 60 yards and a touchdown.

Yadier Molina's second career grand slam capped a six-run eighth inning to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of a three-game set. Albert Pujols drove in a run and scored twice while Matt Holliday and Pedro Feliz each had an RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals. Jake Westbrook went six innings in the start and was charged with two runs on five hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. Mitchell Boggs (2-2) got the win for tossing 1 1/3 innings while giving up a run. The Cards and Milwaukee play tonight at 6:45 on KSMO Radio.

Jason Kubel and Jim Thome both homered in the bottom of the fifth inning, as the Minnesota Twins clipped Kansas City, 5-4, in the opener of a three-game series at Target Field. Brayan Pena drove in two runs for the Royals, who have lost 18 of their last 22 games to Minnesota. Sean O'Sullivan (2-5) yielded five runs on seven hits and five walks in 4 2/3 innings. The Royals and Twins will play again tonight.

Funeral services for Grace M. Pyatt of Salem, age 101, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Wofford Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Wofford Cemetery.

Funeral services for William L. Berarby, Jr., age 94, of Salem will be Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at the Salem Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Salem Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Internment will be held at the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
