An accident Friday evening on Highway 19 South at the “S” curve in Salem took the life of a Salem woman and left another with serious injuries. According to the report, 22-year old Leah Headrick was driving a Pontiac Grand Am too fast for the two consecutive curves on Highway 19 and could not negotiate the curve. The vehicle left the road and struck the River Country Monuments Building where the vehicle overturned coming back into the curve before coming to rest on edge of the roadway. A passenger in the Pontiac, 19-year old Natasha Hudson suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.

An accident occurred Saturday morning at 2:50 in Phelps County on Highway H one-quarter mile east of Edgar Springs that left the driver with serious injuries. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Toyota Pickup, driven by 19 year-old Nathan E. House of Edgar Springs, ran off the left side of the highway and overturned. House was not wearing a seat restraint and was ejected from the Toyota. He was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. The Toyota was totaled and removed by C & C Towing.

An accident occurred at 1:35 Friday afternoon in Texas County on Boone Creek Road about a mile west of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 Chrysler LHS driven by 88-year old William Moore of Licking was traveling southbound on Boone Creek Road, crossed the center of the roadway and struck an oncoming horse-drawn buggy driven by 22-year old Eli Schwartz of Licking. Schwartz suffered minor injuries and was checked by EMS at the accident scene. The Chrysler LHS sustained moderate damage and was removed by a private party. The horse-drawn buggy was totaled and removed by a private party.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Sunday, August 17th at 2:30 in the early morning, an officer located a 28-year old Salem male in the 100 block of East Third who had active arrest warrants from Dent and Texas Counties. He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending a court appearance. Later that night at 6:52, an officer located a 36-year old Salem male at a residence in the 800 block of South Sligo who had an active arrest warrant from Phelps County. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Wednesday, August 20th at 7:31 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the Southeast Missouri Behavioral Health Center in reference to an assault. The investigation revealed that 32-year old female of Garden City had assaulted a 20-year old male of Union. She was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. That night at 9:40, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 25-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated, driving while suspended, careless and imprudent driving and, failure to maintain financial responsibility. He was issued summonses to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. Later that night at 11:47, an officer made contact with a 52-year old Salem male in the roadway near Pershing an Acuff who had an open container of Whiskey. He was placed under arrest for open container and issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Thursday, August 21st at 4:15 in the early morning, an officer made contact with a 25-year old Salem male in the 100 block of South Jackson who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending a court appearance. That afternoon at 1:55, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to damage to a vehicle. The investigation revealed that someone damaged a blue 2000 Ford Taurus that was parked on the southwest side of Burger King parking lot. The damage to the driver side door is estimated to be $800. On Thursday, August 21st at 6:00 that evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem male for possession of heroin, possession of synthetic narcotics and tampering with physical evidence.  He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Reeds Spring scored with 2:13 left in the game and finished with 13 second half unanswered points as the Wolves topped the Salem Tigers, 21-20, on Friday. Zayne Kyser rushed for 126 yards and a score while Zak Eplin added 73 yards and a touchdown on the ground and also threw for a touchdown to Paul McClain. Salem is now 1-1 on the year and will host Houston on Friday.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers opened up their season on Saturday when the participated in the Houston Tournament. The first game went Salem’s way, as the Lady Tigers beat Winona 12-2. In the second round, Salem topped Bakersfield 11-0 in four innings. In the championship round, Mansfield held on to beat Salem, 4-3. The Lady Tigers will play at Ava at 4:30 this afternoon.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host Eminence at 6:00 tonight at the SHS gym...VARSITY ONLY!! Salem is 0-2 on the year.

Matt Holliday came through in the clutch yet again on Monday, helping the St. Louis Cardinals take down the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-4, in the opener of a three-game series that could help determine the National League Central playoff picture. Kolten Wong added a two-run homer while Lance Lynn gave up three runs on eight hits in six innings for the Cards, winners in three straight following a four-game slide. The Cardinals and Pirates play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.

Salvador Perez went 3-for-4 with a two- run homer and three RBI as the Kansas City Royals held off the Texas Rangers, 4-3, in the opener of a three-game series. Mike Moustakas added two hits and an RBI for the Royals, who remained a half- game ahead of the Tigers for first place in the AL Central.  Yordano Ventura (11-9) allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts and four walks over 6 1/3 innings for Kansas City, which snapped a three-game skid. The right-hander returned to the mound after missing his last start because of a back issue. The Royals and Rangers play again tonight.

Maty Mauk threw two of his three touchdown passes to Darius White as 24th-ranked Missouri opened the season with a 38-18 win over FCS foe South Dakota State. Russell Hansbrough had 126 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for the Tigers (1-0), who posted 12 victories and captured the SEC Eastern Division title last season. Missouri will play at Toledo on Saturday.

Graveside services for James Edward Mysch, age 77, will be held at 10:00 this morning at the Carty Cemetery in Salem. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Ron Glaze, Sr. of Salem, age 66, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to Project Win.

Funeral services for Leah Ann Hedrick of Salem, age 22, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Leah Hedrick.

Funeral services for Kathleen Louise Ramelot, age 76, are incomplete and under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
