The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, Dick Kitchen questioned Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles about the delay in the delivery of the plat books from Ruble Surveying. Kitchen said he heard Skiles say in his radio interview that the delay is still going to give the county the plat books ahead of the other low bid as they would have the plat books in October. Kitchen was concerned because the county paid Ruble a premium to have the books delivered in July. Skiles said that there is nothing in the county contract that would penalize Ruble for being late and that is something the county would address in future contracts. Skiles said that when Ruble was late, he actually breached the original contract, but the county would then have to start over with the plat book process and that would take even longer to get the books completed. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 6245, 6250, 6470 and 6570 while materials were going to be added and grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 6420. Purcell also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6590. In District Two, Commissioner Gary Larson reported that a tree was going to be cut down on Dent County Road 3180, and brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 3200 and 4060. Larson said that two workers would be working at the shop getting it ready for construction work to be done. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a meeting in Eminence regarding the re-introduction of elk into Missouri and said that it appears the Department of Conservation has now put this on a fast track. Skiles said that this is going to be discussed at the Conservation Commission’s October meeting to place elk at the Shannon and Oregon County line. He said if people have comments to make on the re-introduction of elk that they should write to the Director, Department of Conservation, P.O. Box 180, Jefferson City, Missouri, 65102. He also said that he attended the ground breaking of the Bunker Volunteer Fire Department’s new Fire House on Saturday and wanted to congratulate the fire department on this event. The commissioners then discussed going with a John Deere 672G grader, but wanted to clarify some items with Erb Equipment to make sure that they were included in the price. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

A wild land fire is burning in heavy fuels on National Forest lands on Salem Ranger District, Mark Twain National Forest, approximately three miles west of Black, Missouri. Black is approximately 40 miles southeast of Salem, Missouri, and is approximately six miles west of Johnson Shut-ins State Park. The wildfire, now estimated at well over 50 acres in size, was discovered Friday morning by the Reynolds County Sheriff’s office. More than 30 firefighters are currently assigned to the fire, including firefighters from the North Reynolds County Fire Protection District. An estimated 10 structures and residences remain threatened. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by USDA Forest Service. Forest Service and Fire Protection District personnel worked hard over the weekend to complete containment lines around the wildfire. Higher humidity and the possibility of rain this week should decrease fire activity and help firefighters put this fire out. To provide for firefighter and public safety, Reynolds County Northern District Commissioner Wayne Henson has closed Reynolds County Roads 822 and 824 to all public access, and only emergency vehicles are allowed in the area.  Reynolds County Road 822 extends from Highway “J” near Brown Cemetery to Forest Service Road 2233, also known Karkaghne Drive. Reynolds County Road 824 at the Forest Boundary past the Black River Youth Ranch is also closed to public access. This road ties into County 824 from the east. They would appreciate the public’s cooperation in this honoring this closure, and they will re-open these roads when conditions improve.
