All Salem R-80 Schools and Northwood R-4 will be closed Friday to allow students and staff to attend the funerals and pay their respects to the families of the students who lost their lives this week. The Salem Fitness Center evening classes tonight will also be cancelled to allow staff and members to attend visitation.

Timber Fun Day will be held on Labor Day Monday, September 1st at the Commons. The downtown parade will start at 11:00 am. There will be free lunch from noon until 2:30 with burgers, brats, hot dogs, chips and soda, compliments of Vandivort Drug at the Commons located Highway 72 north of Salem. The main event will be from 3:00 to 5:00 the logging demo. From 12:00 to 3:00 will be award-winning old time fiddle music, from 3:00 to 5:00 will be music by Ozark Mountain Bluegrass and the Missouri State Loggers Competition will be from 10:00 am to 2:30. The Salem High School Chamber Choir will have a fundraiser of sno-cones. There will be games and contests throughout the day at the Timber Fun Day.

An accident occurred at 3:10 Tuesday afternoon in Crawford County on Highway 19 about a half mile south of Cuba. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 GMC Yukon driven by 64-year old Shirley Callahan of Cherryville was traveling southbound on Highway 19. The GMC was passing 43-year old Martin Volner of Cuba riding on the southbound shoulder of the roadway. Volner lost control and impacted the side of the GMC Yukon. Volner was ejected and traveled down an embankment. Volner suffered moderate injuries and was transported by North Crawford ambulance to Missouri Baptist in Sullivan. The GMC sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.

An accident occurred on Wednesday, August 20th at 7:18 in the morning at the intersection of Franklin and Pershing in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a Nissan, Altima was stopped at a stop sign facing east on Franklin. Trinton Stewart was going north on the west side of Pershing on the sidewalk on a Mongoose bike. Stewart stated he was going really fast down the sidewalk. He stated the Nissan started turning from Franklin onto Pershing and he attempted to avoid the Nissan. He collided with the passenger side rear of the Nissan and the Nissan continued north on Pershing. Stewart suffered minor injuries and was transported by private means to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for treatment. The bike sustained minor damage and damage to the Nissan is unknown.

Weather permitting, contractors working for MoDOT will begin a pavement replacement project along Route J in Dent County on Tuesday, September 2nd. The project involves replacing the pavement on Route J from Highway 72 to Third Street. The roadway will be closed to all traffic during the length of the project, and motorists are advised to seek an alternate route around the work area. This project, which is a cooperative effort between MoDOT and the City of Salem, is scheduled for completion in early November. This Friday, Congressman Jason Smith’s will wrap up his Second Annual Farm Tour as he will visit the Meramec Bison Ranch in Salem. Smith’s Farm Tour throughout the 30 counties of Missouri’s Eighth Congressional District started on Tuesday, August 18th. Earlier in the day, he will visit Big Piney Worm Farm on Route BB in Licking from 9:00 to 10:00, then head to Rolla and visit Jackson Country Orchard on Phelps County Road 5410 from 10:45 until noon. Smith will then travel to Viburnum to the Nutty Pig Farm on Route V from 2:00 until 3:00 before heading to Salem and stop at the Meramec Bison Meat Shop at 605 South Main at 4:00 before heading to the ranch.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be in Bunker tonight and play a varsity match only. The match will begin at 7:00 pm.

The 12th Annual Football Parade has been rescheduled for Friday, September 5th. For more information, call Stephanie Floyd at 247-1441.

The Lady Tiger softball game against St. James that was postponed this Monday has been rescheduled and will now be held on Monday, September 8th at 4:30.

Jeff Locke allowed just one run over 7 1/3 innings and added a pair of base hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-1, at PNC Park. St. Louis starting pitcher Adam Wainwright (15-9) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking one over six frames. Matt Holliday homered and Daniel Descalso had a pair of hits to lead the Cardinals, who have dropped four of six. The Cardinals have the day off today.

Billy Butler and Salvador Perez each knocked in two runs during a six-run eighth inning as the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins, 6-1, in the second test of a three-game series. Liam Hendriks was sensational in his Kansas City debut, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts over seven innings. The victory gave the Royals a 2 1/2-game lead over the Tigers in the AL Central. The Royals and Twins play again tonight.

The St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs will play their final preseason games tonight. The Rams will play the Miami Dolphins while the Chiefs face the Green Bay Packers. Kickoff for both games is set for 6:00 tonight.

Funeral services for Judy Ann Meekins of Salem, age 69, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House.

Funeral services for Sarah Batstone of Salem, age 16, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem. Visitation will be held today from 4:00 to 8:00 at the church. Interment will be in the Sligo Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Batstone family. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Freeda P. Ross of Rolla, age 89, will be held at the James and Gahr St. James Chapel Friday morning at 11:00. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 today. Interment will be in the Macedonia Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lottie Michelle Washburn of Houston, age 26, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held Saturday from 11:00 that morning until service time. Interment will be in the Byars Family Cemetery in Montauk. Memorials may be made to the family.

Memorial services for Melvin Eugene Brummitt of Salem, age 72, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to causes to fight Rett Syndrome and autism.

Funeral services for Kathleen Louise Ramelot, age 76, are incomplete and under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
