The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held a Tax Levy and their August meeting last Thursday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the previous meeting, the financial reports were reviewed. Bills were then reviewed and approved and the reports showed that as of July 31, 2014, 39.8% of the budget has been spent with 95.7% of the budget being received. For the same time last year 52.3% of the budget had been spent with 92.4% having been received. The calendar review showed August 27th as the new date for the audit. In the monthly reimbursement report it showed that a total of 17 calls came in for the month of June. Calls included: three for structure fires, three to create landing zones, four first responder calls, two motor vehicle calls, two calls for mutual aid, one haz-mat call, one fire alarm call, one call for a meeting, one call for training and one other call. As of the end of June 2014 the calls to date were 211. As of the same time period for 2013 there were 184 calls with a total for the year of 316. In old business there was a new revision of the reimbursement policy presented to the Board for review. The reimbursement policy and the building use policy were both tabled to review along with all policies. During new business, the total assessed valuation for the district is $94,400,453. After discussion and review, a motion was made and carried to set the tax levy rate to $0.2315 from the current rate of $0.2306 per $100 assessed valuation. Chief Nash then reported to the Board that the department was in need of a new turn-out gear. The current gear is worn out and has reached it’s expiration date. After discussion a motion was made to purchase 4 new sets of gear each year with the Board looking at the cost of gear each year to determine that the budget would handle it. Chief Nash then reported on the ISO audit. The District did well on the audit and the ISO rating was lowered from a 6 to a 5 missing a 4 rating by only 6 points. The new rating will go into effect in November. Nash then discussed capitol improvement plans to correct this in the next few years. This would include, among other items, adding another Engine for the department along with more training of Fire Fighters and Officers. The Board then set their next meeting for September 2nd at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm and the meeting was then adjourned.
