At the Fall Festival last evening, Janell Conway was crowned the 2008 Miss Dent County with the first runner-up award being presented to Alivia Elliot and the second runner-up award going to Cortney Wainwright. The Miss Congeniality Award also went to Alivia Elliot. The new 2008 junior Miss Dent County crowned last night is Breanna Warden. Congratulations!!!

At the Fall Festival Wednesday Night in the Pie and Pastry Auction, there was a very unique occurrence. Julie Salyer prepared a Stollen to be auctioned with the understanding that the winning bid would also receive a Stollen of whatever variety every month for a year. Her husband, Dan Salyer, won the stolen, but then donated it back to be sold again. Bill Seay then bought the Stollen and he too donated it back to be sold again. Finally, Town and Country Bank bought the Stollen with all the spoils. The total amount raised by the selling of the Stollen accounted for over $1,200 of the proceeds from the pastry auction that totaled $2,904.00.

Today at the Dent County Festival, there will be livestock shows throughout the day with the truck pull tonight at 7:00. Admission at the gate is $6.00 for those 12 years of age and older tonight. Wristbands are now just $10 as the vendor did not bring the required amount of rides to fair. Saturday will bring Kids Day in the morning followed by the Livestock Auction at 2:00 that can be heard live on KSMO Radio. The demolition derby wraps up the main events at this year’s festival Saturday night at 7:00. Admission at the gate will be $6.00 for those who are 12 years of age and up for the derby.

The Dent County Commission met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning.  For the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that weather permitting; grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5070, 5460, 6020, 6220 and 6470 and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 4180. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2540 and 6160 and material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 4443, 5280 and 5290. Tune also said that brush would be cut on the Golf Course Road.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that recently attended a series of meetings at MRPC in St. James. Skiles said at the Transportation

Advisory Committee Meeting, Tom Stein from MODOT, stated that the straightening of Highway 32 West was initially set to be put out for bid in February of 2009, but will more than likely be delayed. He also said that the bridge over Huzzah Valley in Boss is a priority, because it needs to be replaced. Also at the meeting Jerry Randall, owner of Mooney Auto Supply, came by because he felt Commissioner Skiles had singled out his store from an article in the Salem News when it came to issuing invoices for parts purchased by the county and wanted to know why other vendors had not been looked at. Randall said that his store has always given invoices with each purchase and the end-of-month statements that are sent out have the invoice numbers on them, that way the invoice and statement can be matched up. Commissioner Skiles said that Mooney Auto Supply had not been singled out, other vendors have been discussed, but the issue is that when the Commission signs the bills at the end of each month the invoices are not attached to the statement and there is no description on the statement of what had been purchased and that’s what he is wanting to see. Other vendors put a description on their invoice of what’s been purchased. Commissioner Simpson said that all the invoices are kept at the Road and Bridge Department and he matches the invoices to the statement at the end of each month. Mr. Randall said that his statements from now on would have a description of what has been purchased. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Kyle Lohse was suspended five games and fined an undisclosed amount on Wednesday. Lohse was penalized for an incident in his last start on Sunday, when he threw a pitch near the head of the Reds' Edinson Volquez during the fifth inning of Cincinnati's 7-3 win. The 29-year-old right-hander decided to appeal the decision and the suspension will not begin until a ruling has been made.

The St. Louis Rams signed running back Steven Jackson to a six-year contract on Thursday. Jackson arrived in St. Louis on Thursday morning, ending his lengthy holdout as his agent and the club ironed out the details on the new contract. The team did not specify financial terms, but a story on the team's web site said the contract will make Jackson one of the highest paid running backs in the league.
