The Salem Sesquicentennial planning meeting will be held tonight at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main Street in Salem and will begin at 6:00 pm. Be sure and come out and help plan this memorable milestone here in Salem. For more information call 729-0029.
The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will be holding the tax rate hearing this afternoon beginning at 5:45 pm in the hospital library, but will not be conducting their monthly meeting. The monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will be rescheduled for a later date.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a tax rate hearing and their regular meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After the tax rate hearing will be a budget hearing followed by the regular meeting. After approval of the agenda including the minutes from the previous meeting along with the bills, substitute list and the summer school attendance report will be communications. Superintendent Steve Bryant will then update the Board on professional development days, the opening of school, the MSBA fall meeting and annual conference and the no child left behind annual yearly progress report. In old business will be the approval of the pest control bid. In new business there will be a program evaluation on climate, the Board will then approve the tuition for 2009/2010 school year, approve the 2008/2009 annual board report, consider a resolution to prepay bonds, approve the 2009 tax rate, amend the 2009/2010 budget, approve performance based teacher evaluation plan, address resignations and certify the election results. The Board may then vote to go into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The tax rate hearing, budget hearing and the regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education are open to the public.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft, a traffic stop, property damage and an active warrant. On Wednesday, August 12th at 6:25 a.m. an officer was contacted in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a vehicle in the 200 block of South Henderson and took tools and toolboxes valued $1000. At 11:28 a.m. that same morning, an officer was detailed to the 500 block of Highway 32 East in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took boxes of yard ornaments from a residence in the 700 block of South Pershing. The ornaments are valued $400. Then at 7:54 that evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 58-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. And at 9:00 Wednesday night, an officer was dispatched to the 500 block of South Jackson in reference to property damage. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown caused minor damage to a 96 Ford Mustang. The exact value of the damage is unknown. On Thursday, August 13th at 12:30 an officer made contact with a 20-year old Salem male who had an active City of Salem warrant. He was taken into custody, paid the fine and cost on the warrant and was then released. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts or the property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.
The Missouri Department of Revenue announced that six local motor vehicle license offices are the latest to be put up for bid by the state under a new competitive system championed by Governor Jay Nixon and the office in our area is Viburnum. Common transactions that take place at local license offices include renewing or applying for a driver license, renewing or applying for registration on motor vehicles, boats and outboard motors and applying for titles and paying sales taxes on these items. The office in Viburnum for 2008 estimated transactions totaled $5,552. The estimated processing fees for 2008 totaled $18,396. For additional information call (573) 751-2387.

Albert Pujols walked three times and had a key stolen base that led to the go-ahead run in the ninth inning, as the Cardinals edged the Dodgers, 3-2, in the rubber match of a three-game set. Brendan Ryan went 3-for-5 with a triple and run batted in for St. Louis, which rebounded from a loss Tuesday to win for the sixth time in the last seven games. Yadier Molina had two doubles and drove in one, while Matt Holliday hit a sacrifice fly to plate the eventual game-winning run. Cardinals’ starter Adam Wainwright allowed two runs on four hits and a walk in seven frames, and struck out three. Both his runs allowed came in the seventh inning, on homers by Andre Ethier and Casey Blake. Kyle McClellan (4-2) got the win after tossing a scoreless eighth, and Ryan Franklin sealed the victory in the ninth for his 31st save. The Cardinals will start a four game series in San Diego tonight at 8:45.
The St. Louis Cardinals agreed to terms with veteran pitcher John Smoltz on Wednesday, just two days after he was released by the Boston Red Sox. After 20 years with the Atlanta Braves, including his Cy Young-winning season in 1996, Smoltz signed a one-year deal with Boston in the offseason. Smoltz owns a career mark of 212-151 with a 3.30 ERA. Also, he has 154 saves and is just the second pitcher in MLB-history to have a 20-win season and a 50-save season. He is the only player in MLB-history to have over 200 wins and 150 saves.
Gordon Beckham, Carlos Quentin and Alex Rios all hit solo home runs against Zack Greinke to boost the White Sox over the Royals, 4-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series. David DeJesus and Mark Teahen each hit solo homers in support of Greinke (11-8), who was touched for four runs on six hits and one walk, fanning eight in seven innings of work. Kansas City has dropped four of six. The Royals will have the day off today.

Funeral services for Faron E. Roark of St. James, age 51, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Flag Springs Cemetery in St. James.
Funeral services for Jessica D. Whitaker of Salem, age 27, will be held this afternoon at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Boss Assembly of God Youth Group. All arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary.
Funeral services for Carl J. “Shorty” Parker of High Ridge, MO, age 85, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
Funeral services for Gladys Maxine Wilson of Salem, age 87, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Rector Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Smith Surgery Fund.
