An accident occurred at 4:30 early Friday morning in Dent County on Highway 32 about two and a half miles east of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1997 Mercury driven westbound by 30-year old Curtis Brummitt of Salem ran off the left side of the roadway, striking a culvert, mailbox, and fence. Brummitt suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by ambulance. He wasn’t wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Mercury sustained extensive damages and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.
An accident occurred at 5:30 Sunday morning in Crawford County on Highway 19 about six miles south of Steelville. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2008 Dodge driven southbound by 35-year old Cassandra Hawley of Cuba, crossed the centerline and struck a 2006 Jeep Liberty driven northbound by 33-year old Steven McBurnett of Black. Both vehicles overturned and came to rest in the roadway. Hawley suffered minor injuries and was transported by Steelville ambulance to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. McBurnett and an occupant in the Jeep Liberty, 34-year old Robert Stulce of Viburnum, suffered minor injuries and were transported by North Crawford County ambulance to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. Everyone was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Miles and Sons Towing.
A 13-year old boy from Licking drowned early Saturday morning in the Current Rover near Cedar Grove in Shannon County. According to the Missouri Water Patrol report, Casey Brown walked away from the family campsite sometime between late Friday night and early Saturday morning. He apparently went swimming in the river after leaving the campsite and got into deeper water and drowned. His body was found Saturday at 1:40 by Ranger Konkie and the water patrol officers about 300 yards down river from the Big Creek Crossing in eight feet of water. He was not wearing a personal floatation device when the incident occurred. His body was taken to the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a Special Meeting at the district administrative offices boardroom on Tuesday, August 17th beginning at 5:45 pm. After approval of the agenda, the Board will vote to go into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing personnel.
The Doe Run Company’s Missouri-based mine rescue teams recently captured the highest mine rescue honors in the nation – as well as the company’s best finish in its 35-year mine rescue contest history. From July 27th to 29th, Doe Run’s Maroon and Gray teams competed in the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) 2010 Metal/Nonmetal National Mine Rescue Contest. Doe Run’s Maroon Team prevailed against 38 other teams from 16 states to win the field competition, capturing the national championship title. Doe Run’s Gray Team also qualified for the final round, marking the first time in history that both teams advanced. To win, the team managed a simulated mine emergency that tested how well its members adhered to mine rescue procedures and how quickly they completed specific tasks. The Maroon Team consists of Luke Davis, Denny Dickerson, Andrew Hampton, Steve Kearns, Jerry Laramore, Ricky Martin, Shawn Pratt and Steve Setzer. Two members of Doe Run’s Gray Team, Garry Moore, Jr. and Kenny Wood, were also awarded honors with a third place finish in the two-man technician competition. That event tests the team’s skills on mine rescue equipment, including breathing units, gas detectors and communications systems. The Gray Team includes Brad Beck, Randy Hill, Kevin James, Wayne Marlin, Garry Moore, Jr., Kenny Sherrill, Charlie Walker and Kenny Wood.

Marlon Byrd capped a six-run fourth inning with an RBI single, as the Chicago Cubs held off the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-7, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Albert Pujols and Steven Hill each hit solo homers for the Cardinals, who now trail the Reds by one game in the NL Central after Cincinnati beat Florida on Sunday. Kyle Lohse (1-5), pitching for the first time since May 22, got rocked in three-plus innings, giving up seven runs on six hits. The right-hander had been on the 60-day disabled list due to forearm surgery. The Cards have the day off today.
Bryan Bullington picked up his first major league win and Billy Butler knocked in the game's only run, as the Royals earned a split of a four-game series with the Yankees behind a 1-0 victory at Kauffman Stadium. Bullington (1-2) held New York to a pair of hits, walked one and struck out five over eight innings in his longest start in the majors. Joakim Soria pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to extend his own club record with a 26th consecutive save, his 33rd of the season for the Royals, who came in having dropped six of seven. The Royals have the day off today.
Sage Rosenfels threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 28-7 victory over the St. Louis Rams in each team's first preseason game. Top overall pick Sam Bradford made his Rams debut and completed 6-of-13 passes for 57 yards. Bradford was given one of the richest contracts in league history as a rookie, and it will be up to him to lead the Rams to an improvement on last year's 2-14 mark. Danny Amendola accounted for St. Louis' lone offense with a 93-yard punt return for a TD in the opening quarter. The Rams next preseason game will be Saturday against the Cleveland Browns.
Dimitri Nance ran for a pair of touchdowns, leading the Atlanta Falcons to a 20-10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in the preseason debut for both clubs. Tyler Palko scored Kansas City's lone touchdown, as the Chiefs unveiled their revamped coaching staff that features a pair of Super Bowl champion coordinators. Matt Cassel played in limited action and completed 6-of-8 passes for 25 yards. Jamaal Charles carried the ball only four times for 37 yards, while rookie Dexter McCluster had five rushes for 25 yards and three receptions for 23 yards. The Chiefs next preseason game will be Saturday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Funeral services for Denver G. Baum, Sr. of Climax Springs, MO, age 88, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Climax Springs Assembly of God Church in Climax Springs. Visitation will be held this morning at the church from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Climax Springs Cemetery.
Funeral services for Casey Brown of Licking, age 13, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Hutchason Cemetery.
Funeral services for Rosie Bell Shivers of Sullivan, formerly of St. James, age 91, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Assembly of God Church in St. James. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Graveside services will be held at the Sunset Hills Cemetery in Potosi at 1:30. Memorials are suggested to the Assembly of God Church in St. James or Sullivan.
Cremation arrangements for Sharon Kay Kerrigan of Omaha, Nebraska, age 53 are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
Graveside services for Georgia K. Wisdom of Salem, age 75, will be held at a later date in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
