The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their report for the month of July. For the month there were 87 9-1-1- calls, in which all were responded to with seven of the calls being prank calls. The Department served 148 papers consisting of 68 civil papers, 78 criminal papers and four notices to vacate, plus they served 15 felony warrants and 6 misdemeanor warrants. During the month, there were three drug arrests and eight domestic disturbance calls were addressed. The Sheriff’s Department issued 32 tickets and assisted on 14 traffic accidents, but did not make a DWI arrest. For the month of July, the Sheriff’s Department investigated seven burglaries, two reports of vandalism, ten assaults, seven thefts and seven property damage reports. The Department spent 152 hours working in court and spent eight hours testifying. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department handled a total of 198 calls during the month and made seven community policing appearances. In the Dent County Jail Report for July, there were 44 prisoners incarcerated for the month with an average daily total of nine. There were seven transfers to the Department of Corrections, eleven transfers to or from other departments, and there were eleven transfers to a mental facility. During the month of July, the sheriff’s department drove a total of 15,644 miles on criminal investigations, patrolling and prisoner transportation.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a burglary that occurred at a rental property that was being remodeled off of Dent County Road 256. The incident was reported to have occurred between 9:00 in the morning and 1:00 on Thursday, August 9th. Reported taken were a five-gallon can of Color Place paint and three light bulbs. If anyone has any information about this burglar, please call the Dent County Sheriff’s Department at 729-3241.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce has announced that the winner of the July Yard of the Month Contest was Mr. And Mrs. Anthony Danella at 19 West Wood Drive. The final yard of the Month Contest will be in August and the final day to submit your entry will be August 24th. Entries that were previously submitted and did not win can be resubmitted before the cut-off date for consideration. Entries are judged on excellent curb appeal, a well maintained and manicured yard, creativity, an array of colors (plants, flowers & decorations) and seasonal additions. Entry forms and complete rules are available at the Chamber office located at 200 South Main Street in the Visitor’s Center. Entries can also be called in at 573-729-6900.

Jim Edmonds drove in three runs and Kip Wells hurled six solid innings, as St. Louis downed Milwaukee, 12-4, in the opener of a three-game set at Miller Park. Edmonds finished 4-for-6 for the Cardinals, who had 19 hits on the night and drew within 4 1/2 games of Milwaukee in the NL Central race. Yadier Molina was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Albert Pujols had three hits in the game and was on base five times. Wells (6-13) allowed just three runs on four hits and also helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. The Cards have won three straight and six of their last eight games.The Cards and Brewers will play again tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
Cardinals’ second baseman Adam Kennedy underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Tuesday. The procedure was performed by Dr. Lew Yocum in Los Angeles. The surgery confirmed Kennedy had a complex tear of the medial meniscus and underwent a partial menisectomy. The infielder is expected to miss a minimum of six weeks and will begin his rehabilitation process in California. Kennedy will then return to St. Louis when he is able to begin field activities.
Gerald Laird's go-ahead three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth highlighted Texas' 5-3 victory over Kansas City in a battle of basement dwellers. Mark Grudzielanek collected two hits and scored twice for the Royals, who had swept a three-game series with the Rangers earlier in the year. Kyle Davies (5-9) took the loss, surrendering four runs on eight hits with one walk and seven strikeouts over five-plus innings. The Royals and the Rangers will play again tonight in Texas.

Interment service for Retired Staff SGT William W. Harney of Salem, age 68, will be held Friday at 1:15 at the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to the Crossville Baptist Church and all the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
Funeral services for Esther R. Leonard, age 84, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 on Wednesday. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Corinth Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Nellie Mae Galt of Whittier CA, formerly of Cherryville, age 87, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Center Ridge Pentecostal Church in Davisville. Visitation will be Friday 4:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Martin Cemetery in Cherryville.
Memorial services for Mark Donald Isaak of Viburnum, age 49, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Emmanuel Methodist Church in Viburnum. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Emmanuel Methodist Church of Viburnum or charity of choice.
Funeral services for Gayle L. Neal of St. James, age 58 are incomplete at this time, but under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of St. James.
