The Salem Police Department released their reports involving robberies and burglaries. On July 12^th at 6:11 in the evening, an officer was sent to the Casey’s General Store on Highway 19 South in reference to an attempted robbery. The report revealed an unidentified female walked into the store and told the attendant to give her the money from the cash drawer or she would pop them. The attendant did not give the money and the suspect left the scene and traveled west on Highway 32 and went south on Highway 19. On July 14^th at 11:10 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to L.N. Coffman Company on Fourth Street in reference to a burglary. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown forced their way in the building through the roof and took copper wire valued at $1,100. On July 16^th at 5:30 in the morning, an officer made contact with a 25-year old Salem male who had been robbed at knifepoint. The report revealed that a 19-year old Salem female held the victim at knifepoint while property valued at $200 was taken from him. Further investigation led to the suspect’s arrest for robbery and stealing. She was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. A 28-year old Salem male was also arrested for receiving stolen property. He was released pending the application for a warrant. On July 25^th at 10:26 in the evening, an officer was sent to the 300 block of East Truman in reference to a burglary. The investigation of the report revealed that person(s) unknown entered a residence and took items valued at $215. On August 1^st at 6:45 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Fourth Street Mall in reference to a burglary. The report revealed that a person  forcibly entered the building and took about $3,500 in cash and merchandise. At 7:57 that same morning, an officer was detailed to MFA Greenspot in reference to a burglary. The report revealed that a male entered the building and caused $375 in property damage while taking $384.18 in cash and merchandise. The investigation into these burglaries led to the arrest of 21-year old Everett Spencer Martin of Salem who was incarcerated on a $10,000 bond for the burglaries and tampering with a motor vehicle. Anyone with any information regarding the robberies or burglaries, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

An accident happened Sunday morning at 10:30 in Reynolds County on Route HH about ten miles southeast of Ellington. According to the highway patrol report, 66-year old Lloyd M. Mathes of Bunker driving a 2006 Chevy Pickup eastbound attempted to avoid another vehicle on the  roadway, ran off the left side of the road and overturned. Mathes suffered minor injuries and sought his own treatment as he was wearing a seatbelt. The Chevy pickup was totaled and removed from the scene by Wisdom’s Towing.

An accident occurred at 1:27 early Saturday morning in Dent County on Dent County Road 3210 about three miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol, a 2001 Chevy driven by 30-year old Phoenicia Halbrook of Salem, traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a fence and utility pole, and overturned. Halbrook didn’t suffer any injuries, but there was an occupant injured in the accident. 28-year old Larry McDonald of Salem suffered moderate injuries and refused treatment at the scene, but later sought his own treatment. Everybody was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The 2001 Chevy was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The City of Salem will hold a public tax hearing at 6:45 on Monday, August 18^th at the City Hall Council Chambers at 202 North Washington so that citizens may be heard on the proposed tax rate to be set by the city. The assessed valuation for real estate for the 2008 tax year is $35,174,893; and the assessed valuation for personal property for the 2008 tax year is $10,878,142. The proposed tax rate for 2008 is $0.0624 per $100 assessed valuation that would create $287,370.94 in general revenue. The hearing is open to everyone.

Over 250 people attended the St. Louis Blues Caravan held Friday at Country Mart. Yan Stastny and Cam Janssen signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans, while Blues radio voice Chris Kerber acted as the emcee and former player Bob Plager was also in attendance. The St. Louis Blues organization, People’s National Bank, Country Mart and KSMO Radio want to thank all those who attended.

Ryan Dempster gave the Cubs a quality start while Ronny Cedeno and Mark DeRosa knocked in a pair of runs each to help Chicago top St. Louis, 6-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series. The Cubs extended their advantage over the Cardinals in the NL Central to seven games with the series win. St. Louis is now three games off Milwaukee's pace in the NL wild card standings. Chris Carpenter (0-1) surrendered four runs - two earned - on six hits and two walks while striking out a pair of batters. Carpenter tossed 66 pitches, 40 for strikes, but left with one away in the sixth with a strained right triceps. Carpenter was coming off back-to-back no-decisions and was making just his third start of the season. The righty missed 270 games dating back to last season following Tommy John surgery. Albert Pujols and Joe Mather drove in the Cardinals' only runs. The Cardinals travel to Florida to face the Marlins at 5:50 tonight. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Tony Pena, Jr. ripped an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Kansas City Royals over the Minnesota Twins, 5-4, and avoid the three-game sweep at Kauffman Stadium. Mark Teahen scored three runs on three hits for the Royals, who stopped a four-game slide. Robinson Tejeda (1-2) earned his first win of the season in a perfect inning of work in which he tallied a strikeout. Kansas City's Gil Meche, who had won his last four starts, yielded four runs on five hits and seven walks in 6 1/3 innings in which he had six strikeouts. The Royals have the day off today.

Kerry Collins connected on 7-of-16 passes for 105 yards and Quinton Ganther had eight rushes for 115 yards and two touchdowns, as the Tennessee Titans crushed the St. Louis Rams, 34-13, in the preseason opener for both squads. Brock Berlin was 11-of-14 passing for 139 yards for the Rams (0-1). Marc Bulger hit on 3-of-9 passes, totaling 29 yards, but also had an interception in defeat.
