An accident occurred at 11:00 Saturday morning in Dent County on Highway 19 about two miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Ford F-350 pickup driven by 78-year old Leo Grogan of Salem, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a mailbox due to the driver passing out due to a medical condition. Grogan suffered minor injuries and was taken to Salem Memorial District Hospital by Salem ambulance. The Ford F-350 sustained minor injuries and was left at the scene to be removed by the owner.

The City of Salem Board Of Aldermen will hold their next meeting this evening at 7:00 at the City Hall Council Chambers. In the hearing of persons, Wil Dixon and Polly Mitchell want to discuss an incident with an aldermen and an incident with the police, and Laurie Walker will be there as a follow up her presentation made at the last board meeting. Three Bids will then be heard on the reconstruction of the connecting taxiway and the aircraft parking apron, most of which is being paid for by a MODOT grant. After the consent agenda, the board will vote on the compliance work required by the EPA and DNR through Archer Engineering before hearing from the Aldermen. Aldermen Jackson, Riley and Nash will discuss miscellaneous items while Alderman McDaniels wants to get an update on the tree planting, gas usage as well as miscellaneous items. The board will go over budget adjustments for the previous and current fiscal years, set the public tax rate hearing date on Monday, August 18^th, and then go over bills before going into closed session to discuss real estate, personnel and litigation. The meeting tonight at the city hall council chambers of the city of Salem Board of Aldermen starts at 7:00 and it is open to the public.

Lieutenant James W. Remillard, acting commanding officer of Troop I, Rolla, is pleased to announce the assignment of five new troopers to Troop I.  The new troopers were members of the 87th Missouri State Highway Patrol Recruit Class, which began training on January 7^th and graduated on July 11, 2008. The new troopers and their field-training officers reported to Troop I Headquarters on July 28^th as they began their new assignments. Trooper Matthew A. Goodson is assigned to Zone 1, which serves Phelps and Maries Counties.  He is a native of Jefferson City, a graduate of Jefferson City High School, and also a 2006 graduate of Missouri State University. Trooper Brock A. Vogt is also assigned to Zone 1.  He is a native of Rolla, a graduate of Newburg High School and Columbia College. Trooper James E. Conway is assigned to Zone 2, which also serves Phelps and Maries Counties.  He is a native of Mountain Grove, a graduate of Mountain Grove High School, and a 2007 graduate of Drury University. Trooper Bryan S. Silverthorn is assigned to Zone 3, which serves the citizens of Crawford County.  He is a native of Steelville, was home schooled through Heritage High School, and is also a 2006 graduate of Columbia College. Trooper Jeffrey S. Leathers is assigned to Zone 7, which serves Dent County.  He is a native of Salem, a graduate of Marshall High School in Marshall, and he also attended the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Shane Victorino hit a three-run home run as the Philadelphia Phillies rallied late for a 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a three-game set at Busch Stadium. Chase Utley hit a solo home run and scored twice while Pat Burrell also drove in a run for the Phillies, who have won seven of their last eight games. Ryan Ludwick had another strong game as he went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored while Troy Glaus hit a solo homer and drove in two for the Cardinals, who have dropped three of four overall. Todd Wellemeyer started on the mound and gave up one run on four hits in six- plus innings of work. Jaime Garcia (0-1) suffered his first career loss in the game for St. Louis, which is in third place in the NL Central, six games behind first place Chicago. The Cards have the day off today.

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Chris Duncan will undergo surgery today to repair a herniated disk in his neck, likely ending his season. Duncan was placed on the disabled list July 22 with the injury. He received a cortisone shot that apparently had no effect. This will be the second consecutive year Duncan will have a season cut short due to injury. The 27-year-old underwent season-ending surgery to repair a bilateral sports hernia last September.

Mike Aviles homered as part of a four-hit effort to help the Royals crush the Chicago White Sox, 14-3, in a brawl- filled rubber match at Kauffman Stadium. Zack Greinke (9-7) pitched an excellent game before being ejected in the seventh for hitting Nick Swisher. The righty went 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs and six hits and fanning six in the process. Greinke has now won two consecutive starts for the first time since June 19-24. Aviles finished the day 4-for-4 with three RBI and Billy Butler went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Miguel Olivo chipped in three RBI to give the Royals their sixth win in seven games. The Royals got 19 hits apiece on Saturday and Sunday, the most by the team since September 2006 against Detroit. Tonight, the Boston Red Sox come to Kaufmann Stadium to face the Royals.

The St. Louis Blues Hockey Team Caravan will be coming back to Salem this Friday and will be at Country Mart. This year’s event will be inside and will begin at 11:00 and last until 1:00. Players Yan Stastny and Cam Janssen will be attendance along Blues announcer Chris Kerber. KSMO will be broadcasting live from the event.
