The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Tuesday evening in the hospital library. Dr. Ryan Pharr presented a slide show presentation from his Haitian Mission Trip in May in which, he along with a group of mostly pre-med students from the University of Oregon provided health care to hundreds of people in Haiti. During the summary of operations for the month of June, the report showed inpatient revenues were down in all areas, and even though expenses were held in check, the result was a loss from operations of $59,127. The cash flow statement showed a decrease in cash of $249,369, mostly due to slow payments from Medicare and private pay. The days in accounts receivable in June was 64, which is up from 49 in May. There were 60 acute care patients admitted with an average or 7.8 patients per day. In the Director of Nursing report for the month of June, Carol Lacy reported there were 785 emergency room visits with 50 transfers. The average turn around time in the ER was 114 minutes for the month. There were a total of 185 ambulance runs with 188 patients being assessed and 139 patients being transported, 26 surgery cases, 1,737 outpatient registrations, 252 Home Health visits, 8,656 lab tests, 1,406 radiological procedures, 189 CT scans, 26 MRI scans, 24 nuclear med scans, 1,764 cardiopulmonary procedures, 370 rehab treatments, 183 dialysis treatments and 298 clinical visits. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor reported the hospital auxiliary has three fundraisers, September 9th will be Books Are Fun in the hospital library, October 9th and 10th will be Masquerade Jewelry at the fire station and November 3rd and 4th a linen sale at the fire station. During the Chief of Staff Report, the Board approved the resignations of Chadwick Linder, MD, Pathology and Frank Erickson, MD, Teleradiology. Assistant Superintendent Kasey Lucas reported the IT risk assessment was done in July as CPSI looked at their system and the full network to make sure they are secure and they are awaiting the results. Pryor then reported the final health screening for 2014 will be held September 10th and 11th. Judy Thompson reported that the Foundation would have a meeting to continue work on the kick-off dinner scheduled for September 18th. Carol Lacy reported that the Community Health Needs Assessment is still in the implementation stage. Board members were sent the employee handbook for review with updated verbiage and revisions and it will be placed on the August agenda meeting for approval. The Board then unanimously approved the budgeted purchase of a copier-fax scanner for the Emergency Department from Ricoh for $5,557, two touch monitors for Information Systems from SHI for $1,222, three spectrum vacuums for Housekeeping from Hillyard for $948, and a floor burnisher for Housekeeping from Hillyard for $969. The Board also unanimously approved the non-budgeted purchase of a tray line/steam table for the Dietary Department from Central Restaurant Products for $11,846, a mattress for Acute Care from Medline for $398, two feeding pumps for Acute Care from Medline for $1,144 and copier OCR software for the Business Office from Ricoh for $1,728. There will be a public tax meeting prior to the August Board meeting on August 19th beginning at 5:45 pm. The Board then held the election of officers and they are Joe Brand, Chairman; Judy Thompson, Vice Chairman and Ray Bruno as Secretary. The Board then voted to go into closed session.

An accident occurred at 12:50 Wednesday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 19 about two miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 26-year old Julie McMullin of St. Clair was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier north when she entered the southbound lane and struck 2004 Ponitac Grand Am driven south by 29-year old Douglas Headrick of Salem. McMullin and an occupant in the Chevrolet, 40-year old Jason Jones of St. Clair, suffered moderate injuries and were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Headrick suffered moderate injuries but sought his own treatment.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Friday, July 11th at 9:38 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Salem High School in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took blue partitions valued at $1,500, an extension ladder valued at $250, a Milwaukee drill set valued at $250, a Tornado floor scrubber valued at $1,200, a Pacific floor scrubber valued at $1,200 and other equipment valued at $365 from inside the facility. Later that night at 11:56, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem male on an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. He was released after paying fine and cost. On Saturday, July 12th at 12:43 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 55-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated and driving while revoked. He was issued summonses to appear in court and released. Early that same morning at 1:28, an officer transported a 38-year old male of Green, Missouri and a 52-year old Salem female to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains in lieu of a mental commitment order. At 9:23 that morning, an officer was dispatched to Phil-Mart in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that the driver of a van pumped $56.30 in fuel and left without paying. On Sunday, July 13th at 7:57 in the morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 400 block of East Truman in reference to damage to private property. That investigation revealed that someone caused $25 in damage to a mailbox. That same morning at 10:25, an officer was dispatched to Gas Plus on Highway 32 in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that the driver of a blue Jeep Liberty pumped $30 in fuel and left without paying. Anyone with any info regarding the theft reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

Alex Cobb struck out 10 in seven shutout innings and drove in a run with his first major-league hit, leading the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-0 win and two-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. Lance Lynn (11-7) pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits and three walks. The Cardinals have the day off today.

Norichika Aoki drove in the game-winning run in the top of the ninth and James Shields pitched seven strong innings, as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox, 2-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set. The Royals start a four-game series with the Indians tonight.

Funeral services for Mary Lou Jones, age 86, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Hermon Cemetery.

Memorial services for Gloria “Jean” McMillen of Steelville, age 67, will be held at 11:00 Saturday morning at the United Baptist Church in Steelville. Memorials may be given to the United Baptist Church of Steelville. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
