An accident happened at 12:20 Tuesday afternoon that took the life of two Salem teenagers from Dent County on Highway 19 about eight miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Chevrolet pickup driven by 18-year old Mario Feurstein of Salem was traveling southbound on Highway 19. The Chevrolet traveled off the right side of the roadway, Feurstein over-corrected, then the truck ran off the left side of the road where it overturned, ejecting Feurstein and a passenger 15-year old Cody McMurray of Salem. Mario Feurstein pronounced dead at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Salem Memorial District Hospital. McMurray suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by Air Evac to the Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis where he was pronounced dead at 11:32 Wednesday morning. No one was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem. The highway patrol was assisted by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department, Dent County Fire Protection District Firemen and the Jadwin Fire Department.
United States Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway and Dent County Prosecuting Attorney Jessica Sparks have announced that seven Dent County residents have plead guilty, and three are facing trial on federal conspiracy drug charges. Between November 2003 and December 2007, ten people participated in a conspiracy to possess pseudoephedrine knowing that it would be used to manufacture methamphetamine in the Dent County area. Pleading guilt was 39-year old David O. Gray Jr. of Salem, on Tuesday to conspiracy to possess pseudoephedrine knowing that it would be used to manufacture methamphetamine. Gray appeared Wednesday morning before United States District Judge Jean C. Hamilton in St. Louis. Sentencing for Gray has been set for August 1, 2008. Also pleading guilty on Tuesday were 38-year old Wade Mendenhall and 44-year old Mark Brisco to the same charges. Previously entering guilty pleas in late April and early May to conspiracy to possess pseudoephedrine knowing that it would be used to manufacture methamphetamine were 37-year old Jared Wood of Salem, 55-year old Michael L. Curley of Boss, 43-year old Shane Canaday of Salem, and 34-year old Travis J. Russell of Salem. Sentencing is scheduled for June and August. Three men from Salem: 42-year old Tommy Turner, 32-year old Shane Robertson and 41-year old Thomas M. Wind will be facing trial on June 9th. These charges carry penalty ranges of 20 years or more in prison, and/or fines up to $250,000. Hanaway commended the investigative work on the case by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, South Central Drug Task Force, Dent County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Marshal’s Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Drug Enforcement Tactical Diversion Tea, the Dent County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and Assistant United States Attorney Noelle Collins who is handling the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The charges set forth in an indictment are merely accusations, and defendants Turner, Robertson and Wind are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their regular monthly meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00 pm. After the approval of the minutes from the April 24th meeting, Administrator Dennis Pryor will present the auxiliary report, hospital activity calendar and update the board on legislative issues. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will then give a summary of operations and statistics for the month of April along with nursing services and ancillary service reports. Following the Chief of Staff’s report, there will be a physician office building report, the finance committee 2009 budget discussion and approval, a strategic planning update and the Board will discuss Missouri TeleHealth. Hospital purchases will then be presented in new business. The Board may then vote to go into closed session. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.

Ryan Ludwick and Troy Glaus each ended with three runs batted in as the St. Louis Cardinals pounded the San Diego Padres, 11-3, to take the rubber match of a three-game series. Skip Schumaker went 4-for-5 and scored twice for the Cardinals, who have won four of their last five contests. Yadier Molina knocked in a pair of runs and Chris Duncan was 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice. Aaron Miles had three hits with two runs scored and Rick Ankiel hit a pinch-hit home run in the contest. Braden Looper (6-3) got the win after going five innings, giving up just three runs on eight hits. San Diego's starting pitcher Chris Young suffered a nasal fracture and laceration on his nose after being hit in the face by an Albert Pujols line drive. Catcher Josh Bard was forced to an early exit as well, after a collision with the St. Louis first baseman. Bard suffered a high left ankle sprain and will be put on the 15-day disabled list. Padres manager Bud Black said he'd know more on the status of Young in the next day or two. The Cardinals bullpen gave up just two hits after the 5th inning as St. Louis will have a day off today before playing Los Angeles over the weekend.
Jacoby Ellsbury finished 3-for-4 with a home run and scored three times as Boston doubled up Kansas City, 6-3, in the third of a four-game set at Fenway Park. Joey Gathright went 2-for-2 and scored all three runs for the Royals, who have lost four of five. David DeJesus added three hits and an RBI, while Alex Gordon and Jose Guillen knocked in one each. Starter Brett Tomko (2-5) took the loss for Kansas City, charged with seven hits and five runs over 4 1/3 frames. The Royals and Red Sox wrap up their series today.

Funeral services for Willard Eugene Rodgers of Salem, age 62, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Graveside services will be held this afternoon in the Shephard Hills Cemetery in Barnhart at 2:00.
Funeral services for Cody J. McMurry of Salem, age 15, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family.
