An accident happened Saturday afternoon at 3:05 in Dent County on Dent County Road 2270 about four miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 16-year old Justin M. Haney of Salem was driving a 1998 Honda TRX 30 ATV northbound when he crested a hill and swerved to avoid an oncoming ATV. The Honda struck a ditch and overturned, ejecting Haney from the ATV. Haney suffered moderate injuries and was air lifted by the Air Evac Ambulance to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. The ATV sustained extensive damage and was removed by the owner. Haney was not wearing a safety device at the time of the accident.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday evening at the boardroom. After approval of the agenda, consent agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal updated the Board on with various items including the restoration of the old message board center being revamped for use at the Upper Elementary. He stated next Thursday, May 23rd at noon would a ground-breaking ceremony would be held. The District is looking for a 2012/2013 Impala in order for Driver’s Education to be back in Salem and the gym floor will be redone the third week of July. Carvajal stated that the final budget for 2013/2014 will be ready in June for approval and the district will be in the black. Assistant Superintendent John McCullough reported that unofficially the Salem R-80 district scored from proficient to advanced in the EOC scores. In reports, the William Lynch Elementary reported that there were 84 members of the class of 2025 that graduated from kindergarten. Summer Journey-Summer School will run from May 21st to June 14th and enrollment is high this year with 63-kindergarteners, 61-first graders and 64-second graders. At the Upper Elementary, the Arrow Slingers NASP team went to Nationals on May 10th and with a score of 2,937 they have qualified to go on to the World NASP Tournament in St. Louis on June 28th and June 29th. Summer Journey begins May 21st through June 14th and there are currently 221 students enrolled for grades 3 to 7. The Salem Junior High reported a great year and look forward to starting again in August. At the Salem Senior High, the Salem Tigers Baseball Team was SCA champs, Girl’s Track Team were SCA champs, the Boy’s Track was 2nd in SCA, and the Salem Tennis Team was SCA and District champs. Matt Sirois and Jacob Plank were District Double champs and Alan Benowitz advanced to Sectionals in golf for Salem. The Salem High Art took 1st in Districts and in Track Chad Eliott in the high jump, Wynton Kube in the 1600 and Clarissa Michno in the 100 and 200 meter won in districts. The Board then voted to consider and approve the TCRC renewal for $10,000 for another year by a 5-1 vote with Dustin Howard abstaining. The Board then approved MSBA policy 2012c updates, approved a bid received on modular classrooms, approved bidding on the public library building and a storage shed. The Salem R-80 Board approved getting a new track for $160,000 and also going with the color blue for a protective coating at a additional cost of $40,000. The Board approved the purchase of two one-year old lease busses or one new and one-year old lease bus. The Board then accepted the resignation of Jimmie Stephens as High School Social Studies teacher, Derek Heflin as Special Ed instructor and Coach, and David Cochran as Softball Coach. The Board also accepted the retirements of James Wood with Maintenance, and Ruby Duncan and Judy Anderson both with Food Service. The Board then voted to go into closed session to discuss personnel.
The Salem Police Department released several reports for Thursday, May 9th. At 10:30 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a forgery. The investigation revealed that someone stole a check from a residence in the 900 block of West Highway 32 then forged and cashed it in the amount of $100. At 2:10 that afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed someone entered a garage in the 700 block of South Elmer and took a mig welder and other related items, valued $2,110. Then at 4:00 that afternoon, an officer was detailed to Progressive Ozark Bank in reference a theft. The investigation revealed that a 44-year old Salem male had made false deposits and overdrew an account for $671.49. He was located at the Walnut Motel, taken into custody, and incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. In the early evening at 5:10, an officer was detailed to Casey’s General Store on Highway 32 in reference to a counterfeit bill. The investigation revealed that a patron had attempted to pay with a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill. The report is under investigation and the bill will be relinquished to the U. S. Secret Service. A Weed and Brush Control Field Day will be held Thursday, May 23rd at 6:00 pm in Dent County at Fleener Farms near Jadwin. This program, sponsored by the Dent County MU Extension and the Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District will feature timely information for landowners who wish to better control unwanted weeds and brush in their pasture and hayfields. Topics will include identification of common spring and summer weed and brush species, proper timing or spray application for targeted species, herbicide options for optimum control, calibration techniques and demonstration of both boom and boomless sprayers. Directions to the field day from Salem are to take Highway 19 South approximately five miles to K Highway take a right on K Highway approximately one mile to Z Highway, left on Z Highway 5.8 miles to County Road 6305. Take a final left on County Road 6305 about 100 yards to the field entrance. There is no charge for this program, however, please register to attend by calling the Dent County MU Extension Office at 729-3196. Light refreshments will be provided. The Salem Tigers Tennis season came to end Saturday as they lost to Rogersville in the round of 16, by a match score of 5-0. The Tiger Tennis Team ends the season with a record of 10-3.
The St. Louis Cardinals used a four-run fourth to beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 4-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series. Yadier Molina, Jon Jay, David Freese, and Pete Kozma all knocked in a run for the Cardinals, who finished 7-3 on their 10-game homestand. John Gast (2-0), making his second big league start, allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five over 5 1/3 innings for St. Louis. The Cardinals will be in San Diego tonight for the start of a three-game series with the Padres. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 8:35.
Yoenis Cespedes hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning and the Oakland Athletics swept a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals with a 4-3 win. Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer, and Chris Getz each drove in one run for the Royals, who will be in Houston to start a three-game series with the Astros tonight.

Funeral services for Patrick Michael Broyles of Marshfield and formerly of Rolla, age 45, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Rolla. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Ida Hewkin of Eureka, formerly of Davisville, age 95, will be held Tuesday at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Turnbough Cemetery at Davisville. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral home in Steelville.
Funeral services for Frank Edward Ketterer, Sr. of Rolla, age 80, will be Thursday at 10:00 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be at the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick Catholic Church of Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Services for Melvin Edward Miller of Salem, age 59 will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
