The Salem High School Graduation Commencement exercises will be held Friday night at 7:00 for the 129th graduating class at the Salem High School Football Field. If it should rain, the exercises will be moved to the SHS Gym. A total of 148 students are expected to graduate with four valedictorians and two salutatorians. The valedictorians include Sarah Chase, Jennifer Holmes, Braxton Parker, and Cordell Tatom. The salutatorians are Rachel Lyons and Kayla Welch. The exercises will feature musical selections by the Salem High School Chamber Choir and a total of 34 scholarships will be awarded. Those unable to attend will be able to watch the exercises online at fidelitylocal6.com. The ceremony will be played back on Fidelity Local 6 starting on Saturday.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their May meeting tonight at the boardroom beginning at 6:00. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal will update the Board on the building projects, teacher evaluations and the end of year assessments. Principals from William Lynch, Upper Elementary, Junior High and Senior High will then give reports on each of the buildings. In new business, the Board will consider the TCRC renewal and the MSBA procedures 2014A updates. The Board address resignations, adopt SPED compliance and approve the Professional Development Plan 2014-2015 school year. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Office has released their reports. On Wednesday, May 7th, deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 5800 block of Highway 32 West when the driver of a vehicle was stopped for multiple lane violations. As a result of this stop, 37-year old Eric Goodson of Salem was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated. Goodson was transported to the Dent County Jail and was processed and released with summons. On Thursday, May 8th, deputies responded to the 900 block of County Road 5260. Upon arrival, deputies discover that three males were the reported victims of a burglary. He stated that he arrived and found the following items missing from a shop building:  a 1999 Polaris Sportsman ATV and a 2000 Polaris Sportsman ATV, both green in color. Numerous other items were stolen with a value of $8,550. On Sunday, May 11th at 11:10 in the morning, the Dent County Sheriffs Office received an emergency call in regards to a domestic disturbance in progress. Deputies along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to the 2000 block of Highway B near the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. After further investigation, deputies arrested 50-year old Ms. Melissa Hinz, of Hollister. Ms. Hinz was transported to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office where she was issued a summons for assault in the 3rd degree and released. Also on Sunday, May 11th, deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of County Road 6690 for a disturbance in progress. After a short investigation, it was found that a 40-year old Salem female was the victim of an assault. As a result of the investigation, 19-year old Logan Burke of Salem was arrested. Burke was transported to the Dent County Jail and later released pending charges. Anyone with any information regarding the burglary, which is still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Office by calling 729-3241.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has released the roadwork that will continue to take place in our area. In Crawford County, roadside maintenance will take place on Highway 49 between Highway 19 and Route Y; Route V between Highway 49 and Route Y and on Route Y between Route V and Highway 49 today through Thursday, May 22nd. In Dent County, roadside maintenance will take place on Highway 19 between Route B and Route WW on today through Thursday, May 22nd. In Phelps County, pavement replacement in the eastbound lanes continues on I-44 between Highway 63 and Vichy Road. The contractor will begin installing a high friction surface treatment on the eastbound lanes between Route J and Route V the rest of this week. The eastbound entrance ramp at Route J and eastbound exit and entrance ramps at Route V will be closed between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Motorists can expect delays in the area. The project is scheduled for completion later this month. Bridge replacement began this week on Route D over Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad in Jerome. The bridge will be closed during the work. Detours will be in place and the project is scheduled for completion in September. Culvert pipe replacement will take place on Highway 68 between Route V and county road 2340 today through Thursday, May 22nd. Roadway maintenance will take place on Route P between Route T and Route J on Monday, May 19th through Thursday, May 22nd. Roadway maintenance will take place on I-44 South Outer Road between Highway 63 and Route V today through Thursday, May 22nd. Wednesday's game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium was postponed due to rain. The two teams will make up the game on August 30th as part of a day-night split doubleheader. The Cardinals and Cubs will play the finale of their series this afternoon and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 12:10.

Kolten Wong's stay in Triple-A lasted a little over two weeks, with the St. Louis Cardinals recalling the highly regarded rookie from Memphis of the Pacific Coast League on Wednesday. The 2011 first-round pick earned a promotion back to the majors by hitting .344 with two home runs, 10 RBI and five stolen bases over 15 games with Memphis. Infielder Greg Garcia, who had the game-winning RBI when being hit by a pitch in the 12th inning of Tuesday's 4-3 victory over Chicago, was optioned to Memphis in a corresponding move.

Mike Moustakas' three-run double in the second inning proved to be the difference in the Kansas City Royals' 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Jason Vargas (4-1) allowed two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings for the Royals, who swept this brief two-game series. Greg Holland stranded runners on first and third in the ninth to pick up his 10th save of the season. The Royals and Orioles start a series tonight.

Funeral services for Leora M. Hayes of Salem, age 80, will be held at 11:00 Saturday morning at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cavanaugh Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
