Captain Lee Ann H. Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces Troop I officers will once again team up with law enforcement agencies in seven other states in the “Get Your ‘Clicks’ On Route 66” seat belt crackdown on Friday, May 3^rd. The quarterly mobilization includes highway patrol troopers, state police officers and officers from other agencies in eight states along the famed “Mother Road.” The wearing of seat belts by drivers and passengers in vehicles is one of the best ways to prevent death and personal injury when involved in a traffic crash. In recent years, the state of Missouri has recognized the benefit seat belt usage has on reducing traffic crash deaths and injuries through the passage of infant restraint and adult seat belt laws. The effectiveness of using seat belts becomes apparent when considering the following: Preliminary statistics indicate a driver in a 2012 Missouri traffic crash had a 1 in 25 chance of being killed if they were not wearing a seat belt. In those cases where a driver wore a seat belt, their chance of being killed was 1 in 1,221.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol released two arrest reports. On Saturday, April 27^th at 2:58 in the afternoon in Dent County, 29-year old Kyle Selle of Viburnum was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated as a prior offender, failure to drive on the right half of the roadway, failure to register a motor vehicle, no insurance and resisting arrest. He was held in the Dent County Jail on a 12-hour hold. That same time on Saturday in Dent County, 28-year old Rocky Barton of Salem was arrested and charged with a Phelps County misdemeanor warrant for larceny and a Rolla Police Department misdemeanor warrant for failure to appear in court for a charge of possession of marijuana. He is being held in the Dent County Jail on no bond. 

Missouri Department of Transportation crews have started the annual process of striping roadways across mid-Missouri. Striping of Interstate 44 through Laclede, Pulaski, Phelps, and Crawford counties began this week, and will continue for the next two weeks. Striping of Interstate 70 is expected to begin the week of May 13, weather permitting. Crews will work 10 hours a day, seven days a week to lay down the yellow and white stripes, with major routes addressed first, followed by secondary routes. Motorists will encounter slow-moving lines of trucks with flashing lights, boards with flashing arrows and signs that say "Wet Paint." Motorists approaching a striping project are reminded to stay behind the last truck in the striping train to keep from tracking fresh paint across the lanes and damaging the new stripes. If you drive through wet paint, which is water-based, clean your car as quickly as possible with a high-powered water hose such as those used in car washes. Jim Newberry, Natural Resource Manager for Current River State Park reports the operating schedule for the park this year: It will be open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays starting Friday May 3 through Sunday October 27, 2013. The park will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for day use only. Visitors will be able to picnic, hike, fish in both lakes, operate small non-motorized boats on both lakes. Tours of the old Alton Club Resort will be available. Several buildings will be available for rentals including the BBQ House, Lake House and Gym. Rentals fees are $35.00 for the BBQ and lake houses and $50.00 for the Gym. The park provides some river access to the public but does not have any boat launch facilities. The park staff will also be presenting daytime and evening programs for visitors. Contact the park office at (573) 858-3015 for details.

The Dent-Phelps R-3 School is sponsoring the annual Spring Jubilee tonight from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. A free Sloppy Joe dinner will be served beginning at 5:30. A community health fair will be featured; along with the display of student art work and Science Fair projects. There will surely be something for everyone. Dent-Phelps R-3 is located on Highway C about a mile from Highway 72. Everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy this fun and educational evening.

Montauk State Hatchery will be holding the annual Kids Free Fishing Day Saturday, May 4^th from 6:30 am to 8:15 pm. The entire portion of the spring branch will be reserved for kids 15 years and under. Many rainbow trout will be stocked to help ensure that all youths have a enjoyable time. Free hot dogs and soda for lunch. Nature related activities will take place throughout the day and prizes will be awarded. Kids can pick up their free tag starting Friday afternoon, or all day on Saturday. The registration tent will be by the fish cleaning station. Please provide your own fishing pole if possible. Skyler Johnson threw a complete game three-hit shutout as the Salem Tigers blanked Cabool Wednesday afternoon, 6-0, to win the SCA Championship outright with a 6-1 record. Johnson struck out four and walked five in the game as the Tigers improve to 11-5 on the year and guarantee themselves of a winning record for the year. Hunter Barnes went 2 for 3 and scored twice, while Lane Stluka and Jonah Schafer each had two hits driving in one run and scoring another. Salem also used “small ball” scoring on two sacrifice bunts and a sacrifice fly. Salem will travel to Sullivan today to face the Eagles in what could be a district championship preview. The Salem Baseball Tigers have been seeded 2^nd in district play that begins on Saturday, May 11^th. Salem, with a bye in the first round, won’t play until Monday, May 13^th at 1:30 at Sullivan against the winner of Owensville/ Eldon.

Matt Carpenter went 3-for-4 with two doubles and sparked a three-run sixth inning to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds to take two of three from their division rivals at Busch Stadium. Lance Lynn (5-0) was sharp in seven innings of work for St. Louis, allowing just a run on five hits while striking out five en route to his tenth straight win dating back to last season. The Cardinals will start a series with the Milwaukee Brewers tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:35.

Lorenzo Cain knocked in a pair of runs and provided the go-ahead RBI single in a five-run sixth inning, as the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 9-8 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals will go for the sweep of their three-game series with the Rays this afternoon at 1:10.

The St. Louis Blues will play the L.A. Kings tonight in Game 2 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series at 8:30. The Blues lead the series 1-0 and KSMO will join the game in progress following the Cardinal game.

Graveside service will be held Monday at 11:00 in the Oak Hill Cemetery in St. Louis with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Licking United Methodist Church. Funeral services for Arthur “Art” Howald of Steelville, age 94, will be held Monday, May 6^th at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
