Dent County was selected as one of four pilot communities in the state by a special University of Missouri Extension program to reduce obesity and improve overall health. MU regional extension faculty and a variety of community and health based organizations participated in the letter of interest and are in the process of developing the effort in Dent County. The Council for a Healthy Dent County is comprised of organizations supporting the initiative. A partial list of participating organizations includes Salem R-80 School District, Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, Salem Area Community Betterment Association, Salem Memorial District Hospital, Dent County Health Department, Cardiovascular Wellness Program, Dent County Extension and the City of Salem. Goals for the MU Extension Healthy Lifestyle Initiative include creating a healthy community that supports the availability of healthy, affordable, locally produced food and safe, accessible physical activity. The first phase of the Healthy Lifestyle Initiative consists of obtaining information from community residents to assess community needs and direct local planning to improve community health. A brief survey has been developed that includes a series of questions about physical activity and food. To take the survey, go to the salemmo.com website and click on the link for the survey. A youth version of the survey has also been developed and is being delivered to area schools for distribution to students. Surveys are also available at the Cardiovascular Wellness Program and the Salem TCRC in the Salem Freedom Activity Center, the Salem Public Library and the Salem Area Visitor Center. The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their regular meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00 pm. After the Board of Director Swear-In and approval of the minutes from the March 20th meeting, Administrator Dennis Pryor will give the summary of operations and statistics for the month of March, provide the auxiliary report and the hospital activity calendar, discuss legislative updates and also the ER patient and inpatient satisfaction survey results. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will discuss the nursing services, ancillary services and Call Light reports. In Old business, the Board will discuss the Sam Collier Rehab Alliance, receive a physician office building report, and the Finance Committee will give a presentation on the 2009 operating and capital budget. The Board will hear the strategic planning update and discuss Missouri TeleHealth. In New Business, the Board will discuss hospital purchases. The Board may then vote to go into closed session. The regular meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.
The Spring City Wide Yard Sale will be held on Saturday, May 3rd. To signup for a spot on the City Lot located at 4th and Iron, call 729-2428. The fee is $8 and the deadline to reserve a spot on the city lot is Friday, May 2nd. To be included on the map and in advertisements for the Citywide Yard Sale, call 729-4126. There is a $10 fee and the deadline to register for the map is Friday, April 25th. Maps will be available at convenience stores, the City Administration Building and the Chamber Office in the Visitors Center. Copies of the map will also be printed in the Salem News.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving possession, stealing and a burglary. On April 21st at 6:12 in the evening, a deputy while on routine patrol, observed a vehicle with defective equipment on Route J in Salem. Upon stopping the vehicle and further investigation, the Salem Police Department K-9 was called for assistance. The canine alerted and a search of the vehicle resulted in locating a plastic bag containing four small plastic bags, a small envelope containing green plant matter and a package of rolling papers. The four small bags contained a white powdery substance, which field-tested positive for cocaine. An 18-year old male was taken into custody and a warrant was issued for Possession with Intent to Distribute, Deliver or Sell a Controlled Substance. Bond was set at $15,000.00. On April 22nd at 9:51 in the morning, the Sheriff's Department received a report from a resident off of Highway 32 East at Boss that 1600 feet of 350 MCM UD direct burial wire had been taken from a sawmill. The wire was noticed missing on April 10th. Also, leads and a cord had been cut and taken from a Lincoln welder. On April 22nd at 2:06 in the afternoon, the Sheriff's Department received a report of a burglary from a resident located off of Dent County Road 6600. The incident was reported to have occurred from April 8th to April 22nd. It was reported that a barn had been entered and a bridle and unknown number of halters had been taken. Anyone with any information regarding the theft or burglary is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.

Brandon Plank smacked a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and that would be all the Salem Tigers would have needed as they cruised to a 12-0 win over Cabool in five innings yesterday afternoon. Salem scored six runs in the first inning on one hit and ended up with only six hits in the game. Salem was helped on the day by six Cabool errors, five walks and a hit batsman. Louis Carroll pitched a solid four innings striking out seven, walking one, hitting one and gave up just one hit in getting the win. Grant Gordon came on in the fifth inning and struck out the side as Salem improves to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the SCA. Salem will be part of the Stoutland Tournament that is scheduled to start today and continue through Saturday. KSMO Radio will NOT be covering the tournament.
Jose Bautista singled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Pittsburgh Pirates survived a four- run Cardinals first to come away with a 7-4 victory in the opener of a two- game set at PNC Park against St. Louis. Troy Glaus and Adam Kennedy each had two-run singles in the first inning for St. Louis, which has lost four of its last five. Starter Todd Wellemeyer was allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings, striking out five in a no-decision. Anthony Reyes (1-1) took the loss. Albert Pujols and Skip Schumaker each had two hits for St. Louis as they face the Pirates again tonight at 5:45 on KSMO Radio.
Prior to Wednesday's game, the St. Louis Cardinals activated infielder Brendan Ryan from the 15-day disabled list and optioned pitcher Brad Thompson to Memphis (PCL).
Wednesday's scheduled game between the Kansas City Royals and the Cleveland Indians was postponed due to rain. The game was rescheduled today as part of a doubleheader, with the first game starting at 5:10 p.m. Fausto Carmona (2-1) was scheduled to pitch for Cleveland in Wednesday night's game against KC's Brett Tomko (1-2). Those two will start the opening game of the twin bill while the scheduled starters for today's original game -- Indians lefty Cliff Lee (3-0) and Royals righty Brian Bannister (3-1) -- will take the hill in the nightcap.
Former Cardinal General Manager Walt Jockety was named yesterday as the new GM for the Cincinnati Reds.

Funeral services for Doris Mathes of Black, age 77, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the United Baptist Tabernacle in Bunker. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Interment will be in the Myers Cemetery in Oates. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the Locus Grove United Baptist Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the McSpadden Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Maybelle Breeden of Licking, age 67, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Licking Church of Christ. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Licking Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. All arrangements are under the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.
Funeral services for Jacqueline Stark of Boss, age 26, are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
