The Dent County Commissioners Thursday at their regular meeting voted unanimously not to vacate Dent County Road 2230 at the recommendation of District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson. He stated that he could not vacate a road that had different landowners on both sides of the road, and he felt that he could not deem the road as “useless” to the county. Larson also indicated that according to the commission records, the county did not properly vacate the portion of Dent County Road 2230 behind the gate on the road through the hearing process. He recommended to “leave the road as it stands” and Commissioners Purcell and Skiles agreed. In the hearing of persons, Ellen Baum with the Sheltered Workshop in Salem was asking people not to dispose of old tires, plastics or glass bottles at their location. The Sheltered Workshop only recycles paper, cardboard, newspaper, slick magazines and aluminum cans. Glass bottles and plastics are recycled at the Salem Upper Elementary School, and tires can only be recycled through a tire dealer or at the special pickup that will be held in Salem in October. The Sheltered Workshop can also do commercial paper shredding of old records at a small cost, plus they still do Rural Address Number signs. Baum wanted to inform the commission that the Sheltered Workshop would be holding a benefit auction on May 11th at 10:00 to raise funds to take their workers to Silver Dollar City. They will be serving pulled pork sandwiches and they will also have a bake sale. Attendees will also be able to tour the workshop. They are looking for donations for the auction from anyone. In the road report, District Commissioner 1 Dennis Purcell and District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that workers were out checking culverts, checking for storm damage and looking for washouts from the heavy rains. Larson also stated that workers were replacing a radiator on Dent County Truck #68. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a PHA Board meeting last Thursday and the board voted to reduce the percentage of dollars paid on the HUD vouchers from 98% to 90% due to the Sequestration cuts. He then attended a TAC meeting and MoDOT engineer Preston Kramer said that potholes are still being patched, and the shoulder widening will begin soon on Highway 19 from Cherryville to Salem. Kramer also saluted the Salem MoDOT crew for receiving an Innovation Award for their development of a hydraulic saw to cut limbs from over highways. Skiles reported on the CCAM meeting that he attended on Monday and said that the executive board sent a letter to the Capital Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City where they hold their training that they were unhappy with the service and rooms from their last training in February and wish to break their contract with them that was good through 2016. He also attended the Missouri Association of Counties Legislative Day and spoke with Representative Jeff Pogue and the staff of Senator Dan Brown. Skiles then reported on the South Central Community Action Agency Board meeting he attended Tuesday and they will have to trim $235,000 from the Head Start programs due to the Sequestration cuts. The board voted to eliminate the Head Start Program at Lone Star and that created a savings of $140,000, but other cuts are still being researched. They will have another meeting in May to determine what other cuts need to be made. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting for the June 4th election would begin on April 23rd. She said that the last day to register to vote for the June election in her office would be May 7th. The actual last day to register is May 8th, but the courthouse will be closed that day for Truman Day. Postmarked registrations that day will be accepted. Ballots for military personnel will be mailed out today. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.
The City of Salem Clean-Up continues now through Friday, April 26th and will be on your regular pick up day. This means you can place as much household trash as you need to curbside. The Clean-Up also gives you the opportunity to get rid of larger items as well Those larger items will be picked up by city work crews and should not be co-mingled with the household trash, but should also be placed curbside. The city will also be picking up branches, limbs and debris bags that are placed curbside. Every effort should be made to bundle your limbs and branches according to the city codes that state they should be no larger than four feet in length, and debris such as leaves, twigs and grass clippings should be placed in the biodegradable bags available at the City Administrative Offices. ATTENTION ALL 4-H/FFA Livestock Members: The Hog and Lamb Weigh-in is this Saturday, April 20 at the Salem Livestock Barn. Weigh-in begins at 10:00 am and ends at 12:30 pm. Set up will be different from last year, so please be patient and work with us in getting everyone through in a timely manner. As always, all animals will be tagged and wormed, with the first animal free, and additional hogs, $5 and additional lambs, $3.
The Dent County Fire Station will be hosting an open house on Saturday, April 20th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. During the open house, all are welcome to bring their kids and cameras and get photographed on the trucks. Enjoy a tour of the building and see the change from the dealership to the Fire Department and Emergency Management Facility. Come out for a day of fun filled events and enjoy the complimentary hot dogs, hamburgers and all the fixings as well as popcorn and snow cones! That’s the Dent County Fire Station Open House on April 20th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The City of Salem Baseball/Softball/T-Ball Program is just around the corner. Signups will be held tonight from 4:00 to 6:00 in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center at the Armory. The Summer Youth Ball Program is open to all boys and girls age 4 to 13 years of age and the cost is $20 per child. The Salem Tiger Baseball game at Thayer, the tennis meet at Waynesville, and the track meet at Mountain Grove that were scheduled for yesterday were all postponed due to the rain. Brian Elliott stopped all three shots he saw in the shootout in the St. Louis Blues' 2-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. Andy McDonald was the lone scorer in the shootout. Elliott stopped 33-of-34 shots for the Blues, who moved a point ahead of the Minnesota Wild for the sixth seed in the Western Conference. The Blues will host the Dallas Stars tonight at 7:00. Carlos Beltran's opposite-field solo home run in the eighth inning gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a four-game series at Citizens Bank Park. Adam Wainwright (3-1) scattered nine hits and three runs over seven innings to pick up the win. The Cardinals and Phillies will play again tonight at 5:30 on KSMO.
The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but will be in Boston to start a three-game series with the Red Sox tonight at 6:10.

Funeral services for Johnny Lee Henson, Sr. of Rolla, age 75, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00, April 23, at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Pilot Knob Cemetery near Rolla.
Funeral services for Pauline J. McClain of Salem, age 69 will be Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel. Visitation will be held prior to the service from at 11:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
