The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of March. During the month, they wrote 18 traffic tickets and 10 warning tickets. They served 26 summons to appear in court and also served three fugitive warrants. The Salem Police Department investigated 19 accidents, six assaults, one report of domestic assault, and two reports of driving while intoxicated. The Police Department also investigated nine reports of stealing, nine reports of property damage, one burglary, two reports of disorderly conduct, one report of trespassing, one report of tampering, one report of sexual misconduct, one report of stalking, two reports of a lost or stolen plates, two reports of rape, one report of leaving the scene of an accident, and two reports for possession of marijuana. The Salem Police Department conducted one death investigation. The police department received 1,592 calls for service during the month, handled 119 walk-ins to the station and redirected 73 calls to the animal control officer. They also spent 21 hours in court testifying, four hours as court bailiff and spent18 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in March included 18 calls for escorts, seven 9-1-1 calls, two intoxicated driver investigation calls, two calls for a suspicious person or vehicle, five calls for peace disturbances, 18 ambulance assist calls, one call for a prowler, five calls for alarms sounding, six calls for fights in progress, seven domestic dispute calls, two calls for an intoxicated pedestrian, three fire calls and one wrecker was needed. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,889 miles during the month of March. The Salem Police Department arrested 15 males and 7 females during the month of March.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, Commanding Officer of Troop I, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint special enforcement operation conducted in Phelps County. The checkpoint began at 10:00 pm Saturday, April 4^th and concluded the next morning at 2:00 am.  A total of 17 tickets that were issued and 79 warnings as a result of a sobriety checkpoint held on U.S. Highway 63, approximately one-half mile north of the Rolla city limits. During the course of the four-hour operation, 301 vehicles total were stopped.   There were 9 citations issued for seat belt violations, one of a driver license violation, one for an uninsured motorist, four for improper vehicles registration, one for a window tint violation and one for a misdemeanor warrant violation.

The regular monthly meeting of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission will the held on tonight at the MRPC office located at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James beginning at 7:30 pm. After approval of the agenda and several contracts, Connie Willman will report on grants submitted and funded since the last meeting along with application deadlines and funding availability. Tammy Snodgrass will report on solid waste activities and on the Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting. Kraig Bone will report on MREPC activities, Donald Dodd will report on the Transportation Advisory Committee meeting and T.R. Dudley will report on workforce development activities. Executive Director Richard Cavender and Chairman Laura Antolak will report on issues of interest. The regular monthly meeting of the MRPC is open to the public.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their meeting Tuesday night. After approval of the agenda, there was discussion on old business. The old fire hose is cleaned and being distributed. A new drug and alcohol policy was reviewed and after changes and corrections were discussed the issue was tabled until the next meeting. The training policy was also tabled after discussion and will be revisited at the next meeting. The attendance policy for the Board of Directors was discussed and revisions were amended. It was also noted that the attendance policy should be a by-law. Under new business the new tanker truck from the Missouri Department of Conservation was discussed. The truck has to be in service within 6 months, at which time it will be inspected by the Department of Conservation. The first part of the process is to have the truck painted and bids were presented. After discussion, the motion was made to move forward with the necessary repairs for the newly acquired tanker, with the first step of being painted awarded to Color World. Bids were then presented for tires for truck #88 and the bid was awarded to Hubbs Tire. The Board approved to lock in the price at $1.379 for propane from Titan until March 2010. Fire Chief Brad Nash then reported on the new officer training. With three positions now open, the three trainees have been assigned the probationary status of Lieutenant. They will remain on a 6-month probationary status and if they fulfill all qualifications, will be assigned to permanent office status. Nash also reported that they have three applications for the new firefighter recruitment program.

The City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball, Softball and T-Ball Programs are just around the corner. Signups for children ages 4-14 years old will be held on tonight, April 9th and tomorrow, April 10^th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The final sign-up will be held this Saturday, April 11^th from 9:00 am to noon. All sign-ups will be held in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center. The leagues are for all boys and girls age 4-14. The cost is $15 per child. For additional information contact the Parks and Recreation Department by calling 729-6290.

In the Salem Baseball Tigers games yesterday. Salem lost to the West Plains Zizzers by the final score of 14 to 7. Salem is now 5-1 on the year and 1 and 0 in the SCA. The Tiger are schedule to host Cabool Bulldogs today at 4:30. KSMO will air the game on KSMO Radio and ksmoradio.com.

Zack Greinke allowed only three hits over six-plus scoreless innings as Kansas City topped the Chicago White Sox, 2-0, in the middle test of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field. Greinke (1-0) struck out seven and walked three, only giving up two singles to Jermaine Dye and one to A.J. Pierzynski. Coco Crisp and Mark Teahen drove in a run apiece for the Royals, who picked up their first win of the season after a 4-2 setback on Tuesday. The Royals will be finishing the series with Chicago today.

Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez each went 4-for-5, as the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-4, to win the third test of the season-opening four-game series between the clubs. Joe Thurston doubled twice and drove in a run for St. Louis, while Rick Ankiel finished with a hit and an RBI. Todd Wellemeyer (0-1) gave up five runs on 12 hits and two walks in a five-inning start for the Cardinals, and struck out three. The Cardinals will be finish off the four game set with Pittsburgh today at 12:20 and you can hear that game on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Blues are in sole possession of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference and are two points ahead of Nashville. They will be playing the Columbus Blue Jackets tomorrow at 7:30.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed wide receiver Rodney Wright and long snapper Tanner Purdum.

Graveside services for Mary Lou West of St. Louis, formerly of Steelville, will be held Saturday at 2:30 at the Barnicle Chapel Cemetery in Steelville. Visitation will be from 11:00 to 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association or American Heart Association.

Funeral services for Anna Salemie of Ridgedale, age 87, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Everett Eugene (Gene) Plank of Salem, age 82, in honor of Mr. Plank’s wishes there will be no service. All the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
