The Salem Baseball Tigers will play Thayer at 4:30 in Salem for 3rd place in the SCA Tournament. Salem beat Cabool Tuesday, 10-9 and then lost to Houston on Wednesday, 5-0. The regular season play begins on Tuesday when the Tiger travel to Licking.
The City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball/ Softball/T-Ball program last signup will be held today from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center located at 1201 West Rolla Road. Albert Pujols and Brendan Ryan each hit a solo homer, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-1 win over the New York Mets in a Grapefruit League matchup. Chris Carpenter was superb in the start, allowing only one run, two hits and two walks in six frames while adding seven strikeouts. Trever Miller, Mitchell Boggs and Dennys Reyes combined to pitch three innings of scoreless relief. The Cards play the Washington Nationals today. Billy Butler went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, and Kansas City scored five runs in the ninth inning to beat Seattle, 8-7, in Cactus League play. Kurt Mertins tripled and drove in a pair, while Scott Thorman and Buck Coats each finished with two hits and an RBI for the Royals, whose starter, Edgar Osuna, was touched for four runs on five hits and two walks in three innings. KC plays the LA Dodgers today.
Paul Kariya notched a goal and an assist, leading the St. Louis Blues to a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Scottrade Center. B.J. Crombeen and T.J. Oshie also tallied for St. Louis, which badly needed the win to keep its slim playoff hopes alive. Chris Mason stopped 30-of-31 shots to pick up the victory.
