The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting Commissioners Bobby Simpson and J.J. Tune both reported that a representative from MODOT was here to inspect bridges in Districts 1 and 2. Simpson and Tune also said that both district crews are finishing putting up the new road signs and getting snow equipment ready. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Emergency Management Director Brad Nash would be at Thursdays meeting at 10:00 to discuss the revisions to the counties emergency management plan. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the last day to register to vote for the April Municipal Election is March 12
th. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting at the hospital library Thursday evening. Controller Stephanie Wofford reported that the summary of operations for the month of January showed an excess of revenues over expenses of $367,306 for the month because $351,450 of unrestricted tax money was received. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy gave statistics for the month and there were 87 patients admitted, 762 emergency room visits, 182 ambulance runs, 29 surgeries, 381 clinical visits, 282 home health visits, 8,008 lab tests, 1,052 radiological procedures, 23 MRI scans, 278 CT Scans, 122 dialysis procedures, 8 mammograms, 19 nuclear med scans and 301 rehabilitation procedures were performed. Pryor reported that the floor for the new Physicians Office Building should be completed by Friday and that a total of $369,368 has been spent on this project. On March 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th the hospital will have a Diabetic Screening blood test from 6:30-9:00 AM, in the hospital library, for a cost of $10. The board approved the budgeted purchases of a Vascular Doppler with stand for $947 from Cardinal, 2 IV pumps for $3,160 from Part Source, 2 battery packs for $720 a battery charging system for $1,756 and a cardiac monitor for $23,840 from Zoll Medical, 4 wheelchairs for $608 and an extra wide wheel chair for $255 from Medline, a pediatric intubation trainer for $478 and 8 adult CPR manikins for $1,240 from Moore Medical, a cautery machine for $9,500 from MegaDyne, a hand-held co-ox meter for $4,995 from Masimo Americas, a food processor for $819 from Burrows, 3 entryway mats for $441 from Hillyard, 16 LCD monitors for $2,574 from Comp USA and 3 network security switches for $671 from CDWG. The board also approved non-budgeted purchases of a fax machine for $166 from Comp USA, 2 microfiche storage cabinets for $3,422 from Russ Bassett, 3 commodes for $129 from Medline and a shower chair for $181 from Burroughs. The board then went into closed session.
The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening in council chambers of city hall. At the meeting, the board approved the moving of the Emergency management Center from the City Hall Council Chambers to the Dent County Fire house into a renovated room with access to 23 phone lines and radio. They also approved annexes to the Emergency Operation Plan as requested by SEMA that revised the current plan. Mayor Gary Brown reported on the Planning and Zoning Board hearing and meeting on the subdividing of lot 84 Block “W” of the Douglas Addition and there was no opposition. The board approved to draw up an ordinance to allow the subdivision. The board approved the transplanting of eleven 3-4 inch wide trunk ash trees from the treatment plant and moves them to the city park for $1,900. The money will come from the public grounds fund. The board then approved for an ordinance to be drawn up that would increase the city’s current electric rate 30% to cover the 34% increase levied by Sho-Me Power effective April 1st after a long discussion. For the average electric user of about 1000 kw per month, the cost increase would be about $22.41 per month. Alderman McDaniels asked about the electronic sign at the Salem Freedom Activity Center and the mayor said that new bulbs need to be purchased. He also would like to erect a sign stating that Salem is the home of the 100 Acre Road Rally at the Crossroads and possibly even mark a permanent start and finish line downtown. Mayor Gary Brown said that he had received numerous phone calls about some dilapidated housing and he will begin putting a list together when the weather allows. He said that the Road Rally this year was a tremendous success with 53 teams involved and they will return again next year. He also said that road work to level off McArthur Streets crown will probably not be completed this summer, but MoDOT will try to get to it as soon as they can. The board approved Bill #3121 that authorized the mayor to sign an agreement with city engineers Bucher, Willis and Ratcliff for work on the airport grant for the new taxiway and possibly lights. They also approved Bill #3122 that allows the city to write off old outstanding utility bills prior to December 31, 2002 of $201,173.53. The ordinance still allows the city to collect these debts, but remove them as a working receivable from the books. The board then approved Bill #3123 that would approve a settlement with Sprint Nextel Corporation for taxes collected on cell services but not distributed. The amount would be $4,916.35. These suits are still pending, but it does put a working document in place if these companies want to settle. After approving the bills, the board went into closed session.

All varsity and JV basketball players and cheerleaders and their parents are invited to the 2007-2008 Basketball Sports Banquet. It will be held on Tuesday, March 4th at the Salem High School cafeteria beginning at 6:30 pm. Coach Travis and Gayle Wrightsman, and Coach Karr will hand out their awards.
Elijah Dukes homered to help the Washington Nationals to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Grapefruit League action. Troy Glaus was 2-for-3 and Skip Schumaker had an RBI single for the Cardinals, while Braden Looper took the loss after allowing one earned run on three hits in his three-inning start.
Mark Teahen's RBI single in the ninth inning gave the Kansas City Royals a 7-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox in Cactus League action. Joey Gathright scored twice and drove in a run, while Damon Hollins slammed a two-run homer to lead the Royals offense. John Bale was perfect through three innings in his start, striking out four.
The St. Louis Blues will try to end their six-game losing streak as they face the LA Kings tonight at 7:30 on KSMO Radio.
The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly come to terms on a contract with linebacker Demorrio Willams. The Kansas City Star reports the deal is for five years and worth $16 million, with $5.5 million guaranteed. The Chiefs have also claimed fullback Oliver Hoyte off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys.
St. Louis Rams have signed guard Jacob Bell to a six-year contract.
