Lance Jeter put up 16 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, and Nebraska continued its roller-coaster season by upending No. 22 Missouri, 69-58. Marcus Denmon paced Missouri with 19 points in the club's second straight loss. The Tigers (22-8, 8-7) ended their road slate at 2-7 and finishes the regular season at home against No. 2 Kansas on Saturday.
Miikka Kiprusoff stopped all 25 shots he faced for his sixth shutout of the season, as the Calgary Flames crushed the St. Louis Blues, 6-0, at Scottrade Center. Ben Bishop yielded all six goals on 29 shots for the Blues, who have dropped five of their last six games. The Blues will be in Washington to face the Capitals Thursday night.
St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter pitched 2 2/3 strong innings in the Cardinals' 7-1 victory over Florida before leaving with what appeared to be a minor left hamstring strain. Carpenter cruised through 10 batters, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out two. The former Cy Young award winner walked off the field during the third inning, but said afterward that he didn't think the injury was "very bad" and that his hamstring was "just strained a little bit." Mitchell Boggs replaced Carpenter but only lasted two-thirds of an inning before leaving in the fourth with a lower back strain. He finished with two strikeouts and didn't surrender a hit. Both injuries appeared to be minor, but they caused a stir considering the Cardinals have already lost No. 1 starter Adam Wainwright for the entire season to Tommy John surgery. The Cardinals got two-run homers from Matt Holliday, Allen Craig, and Jon Jay and a solo blast from Mark Hamilton. The Cardinals are now 1-1 for spring training.
Lorenzo Cain's RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning was the difference in Kansas City's 4-3 win over San Diego in Cactus League play. Clint Robinson doubled, tripled and drove in two runs for the Royals, whose starter Luke Hochevar allowed four hits and a run over two innings. Jesse Chavez picked up the win with a scoreless top of the eighth. The Royals are 2-1 in the spring.
After helping Missouri State University to its first regular-season Missouri Valley Conference crown and the tournament's No. 1 seed, MSU's Kyle Weems is the 2011 Larry Bird MVC Player of the Year.
