The Dent County Sheriff's Department and the Division of Drug and Crime Control of the Highway Patrol are conducting an investigation into the double homicide on Dent County Road 2240. On Tuesday, March 1st at 5:50 pm Dent County Coroner Gina White pronounced 50-year old Mary L. Lewis and 57-year old Dennis L. Lewis both of Salem dead at their residence. Preliminary autopsy results from the University of Missouri-Columbia Hospital in Boone County showed that both Mary Lewis and Dennis Lewis died from gunshot wounds to the head. The incident is still under investigation. Sheriff Rick Stallings says that they do have a person of interest in the crime.

he Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Thursday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the previous meeting, the bills were paid and file copies were signed. Board President Grant Hamlet presented the board with a letter from the roofing company offering $6,000 as a settlement for the Board to review. After a discussion, the Board voted to accept the offer to close negotiations between Rel-Tek and Dent County Fire Protection District. The districts calendar was reviewed and approved, and registration for an election and a letter to the Clerk were filed with two candidates having filed for the two open positions. There were a total of 28 calls during the month of January. The calls consisted of 10 structure calls, three calls for flue fires, one brush call, one call for a landing zone, four calls for first responders, two calls regarding motor vehicles, one call for a gas leak, one call for carbon monoxide, one search and rescue call, one fire alarm call, one call for a utility pole, one call for training and one call for a meeting. In new business, a bid for new phone system was presented from Fidelity for $4,053; and two quotes were received from Advanced Telephone for $3,000 and $3,200. A discussion was held on the warranties and features, and then a motion was made and carried to accept the $3000 bid from Advanced Telephone. The Board approved the use of the District building for the Roots Festival and the Board moved to continue with the capitol improvements to the dining room and kitchen. The board asked Chief Nash to coordinate this. Chief Nash then reported that the station inventory is still in progress and Ladder Truck 81 is at Clarke Power still being checked. The Board then set the meeting for March for Thursday, March 10 at 6:00 pm. The meeting was then adjourned.  

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce March membership luncheon meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 8^th at the Southwest Baptist University Salem Campus beginning at noon. The program will be about social and local media and how to reach potential customers. The luncheon is being sponsored by Fidelity Communications and there is no cost. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their reports involving arrests made in Dent County this past week. On Saturday, February 26^th at 12:45 in the morning, 34-year old Daniel Bisby of Salem was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to drive on the right half of the roadway, and for not having an operator’s license. He was taken to the Dent County jail. On Monday, February 28^th at 7:15 at night, 19-year-old Kayla Inman was arrested on a felony Dent County warrant for possession of a controlled substance. She was taken to the Dent County jail.

The opening of trout season at Montauk State Park began Tuesday morning with temperatures in the teens and the banks filled with anxious anglers. For the day, a total of 1,661 adult trout tags were sold plus 151 kids tags were sold for a total of 1,812 anglers. The largest trout caught on opening day were 6 pounds and 8 ounces by Jeff Wilfong of Bonne Terre and Dylan Watson of Mansfield and were both rainbow trout. The next largest trout netted were 6 pound and six ounces by Tad Hedrick of Salem and Brian Ginnever of West Plains and they were both rainbow trout. Hedrick also caught a 5 pound and 10 ounce rainbow trout on the day. The regular catch and keep trout season will continue through October 31^st. Remember that you do need a Missouri Fishing License and a trout tag to fish for trout in Missouri trout streams.
