The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a shoplifter, theft, a mental commitment order and active City of Salem warrant. On Friday, January 28
th at 3:00 PM, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 22-year old female from Mexico, Missouri for stealing merchandise valued at $600. She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Monday, February 7
th at 2:10 PM, an officer was dispatched to McDonalds Restaurant in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a bank deposit valued at $2,462.29. At 9:20 that night, a 30-year old Joplin male was transported to Phelps County Regional Medical Center in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Wednesday, February 9
th at 6:52 in the evening, an officer made contact with a 21-year old Salem male, which had an active City of Salem warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody and released after paying the fine and court cost. Anyone with any information regarding the theft, which is still under investigation, may call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.
The City of Salem Finance Committee will hold a meeting, called by Mayor Gary Brown, on Tuesday, February 15th at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 2:00 pm to review the six-month financial statement. The meeting of the City of Salem Finance Committee is open to the public.
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will be completing drainage work in two locations on Route 49, in Crawford County. Work will extend from Adams County Road to Wilhitte County Road, and from Route 19 to Route V, beginning today. Weather permitting, crews and equipment will be on the roadway between 6:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Drainage work is needed to keep the roadway dry and maintain stability and proper drainage of water from the travel lanes. While performing this function, crews and equipment are located directly on or near the roadway. Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling in the area. The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind the public that driver examination stations throughout the state would be closed in observance of Washington’s Birthday, on Monday, February 21st. Normal Operations will then resume on Tuesday, February 22nd.

The University of Missouri Extension will host a “Winter Grazing Workshop” at the University of Missouri Wurdack Farm from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm on Wednesday, February 23rd. This workshop is designed to teach and demonstrate the benefits of grazing stockpiled fescue during the winter months and participants will be provided class room instruction as well as the “hands-on” training necessary to successfully winter graze. Topics for the workshop will include how to grow and manage stockpiled fescue, feed value of stockpile, meeting the nutritional requirements of various classes of beef cattle with stockpile, allocation and feeding of stockpile, winter fence and water systems, and stockpiling economics. Additionally, participants in this workshop will have the opportunity to tour two farms that are grazing stockpiled tall fescue. Cost of the workshop is $20 per person, which covers the cost of materials, a hot lunch, and refreshments. Class size is limited, and reservations are required by February 18th. The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers dropped a 47-44 decision Friday afternoon to the Willow Springs Lady Bears in a makeup game. Kristy Bermudez netted 11 points and Jennifer Herndon added ten more in the loss as the Lady Tigers fell to 2-2 in the SCA. Then on Saturday afternoon at the Newburg Tournament with Salem trailing Viburnum, 34-31, Kristin Hemken stole the ball twice in the last minute that led to three points by Jennifer Herndon and two points for Kaitlyn Wells as Salem defeated Viburnum, 36-34 and end a three game losing streak. The Lady Tigers are now 10-11 on the year and they will host the Lady Eagles from Mountain View/Liberty tonight with the JV game at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO at about 7:20.
The Salem Lady Tiger SCA Conference Basketball game with Thayer that was postponed due to weather has been rescheduled for Saturday, February 19th at 2:00 at Thayer.
Friday night, the Salem Boys Basketball Tigers got 12 points each from Dex West, Jacob Kettner and Jonathan Hambacker, but it wasn’t enough as Thayer beat Salem 59-53, taking advantage of 21 Salem turnovers. Then on Saturday, Salem had five 3-pointers in the first half and dominated the boards against the Houston Tigers in a makeup game, 62-37. Jonathan Hambacker had 12 points to lead Salem with Jacob Kettner adding 11 points and Chad Elliott netted 10. Salem is 6-15 on the year and 1-3 in the SCA.
The Boys will be back in action Tuesday night at the SHS gym and it will be Cancer Awareness Night against the Mountain View/Liberty Eagles. The grand prize will be a drawing for two winners for Mizzou Basketball Tickets & Parking Pass for the Mizzou vs. Baylor game on Feb. 23rd. There will also be a Silent Auction for Sports and Health Fitness themed baskets; an “In Honor and In Memory” Tree; buy a HEART for $1; and a Free-Throw contest at Half-Time.
The Salem Boys Basketball home game with Cabool that was postponed will be made up Saturday at 3:00 at the SHS Gym.
Michael Dixon had 16 points, Ricardo Ratliffe scored 13 and 19th-ranked Missouri posted an 84-61 victory over Oklahoma. Justin Safford rounded out the Tigers' double-digit scorers with 11 points and Laurence Bowers totaled nine rebounds and eight points for Missouri (19-6, 5-5 Big 12). The Tigers have won all 15 of their games at Mizzou Arena this season, and they will host Texas Tech on Tuesday at 5:30.
In the first game of a home and home, Martin Havlat pulled Minnesota even with 58 seconds to go in regulation and John Madden scored the decisive goal in the ninth round of the shootout, as the Wild rallied to beat St. Louis, 5-4, at Scottrade Center on Friday night. In the second game, Niklas Backstrom made 24 saves and Cal Clutterbuck scored the first of three consecutive Minnesota goals, as the Wild topped the St. Louis Blues in Minnesota, 3-1. The Blues will host Vancouver tonight at 7:00 and KSMO will air part of the first period, break away for Lady Tigers Basketball, and then air the third period of the game after the Lady Tiger game.

Funeral mass for Joseph Edgar Morgan of Rolla, age 65, will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 at the St. Patrick Church in Rolla. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 at the St. Patrick Church with a Vigil Service at 7:00. Memorials are suggested to the Recreation is for Everyone Foundation, St. Patrick Church Food Pantry, or Phelps Regional Hospice. All arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
Funeral services for Beverly Ann Flett of Salem, age 73, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until service time on Wednesday. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family for expenses.
Funeral services for Frances “Mae” Taff of Jefferson City, formerly of Steelville, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Victory House Christian Academy c/o the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Paul Huitt of Bella Vista, Arkansas, formerly of Salem, age 88, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Military Honors.
