Tuesday night at the Grace Community Church Gathering Place, the Salem Area Community Betterment Association saluted individuals and organizations that provided exceptional service to this community through their volunteer efforts. Three individuals and three groups received the prestigious “Gift of Time” Awards.  The Community Enhancement “Gift of Time” Award was presented to Bonnie Darling for her work organizing the Trees and Trains Exhibit. Michael Helm was given the “Gift of Time“ Award in the Humanitarian category for his transforming into Santa Claus each Christmas season to brighten the holiday season for children. The Historical Preservation “Gift of Time” Award was presented to Tod Kinerk for his dedication of time and talent to the Timber Days festival and parade. The organizations that received the “Gift of Time” Awards were the City of Salem Park Board in the Community Enhancement category for their commitment to bringing sports to area youth. The Salem R-80 National Honor Society was honored in the Youth category for organizing the local Toy Drive each Christmas. The Riverways Pregnancy Resource Center Teen Mothers Crossroads Mentors received the Humanitarian Award for working with teen mothers.  Others nominated were Doyle Lakes & Family, Larry Gray, Tina Pierce and Melissa Hayes. Congratulations to all those saluted for their outstanding efforts!

The Dent County Sheriff’s Office has released their reports. On Tuesday, February 4^th at 1:13 in the afternoon, deputies conducted a knock and talk investigation in the 2000 block of South Henderson. Deputies were investigating the compliance of Timothy Reinier with his Sex Offender Registration. The investigation revealed that Reinier was not in compliance. He was transported to the Sheriff's Office for questioning. Reinier was later to released to his mother with charges pending. Then on Thursday, February 6^th, Reinier was arrested on formal charges of failing to register as a sex offender. He was incarcerated on a $10,000 cash only bond. On Saturday, February 8^th at 11:00 in the evening, a Lenox fireman was heading back to the Lenox Firehouse on Highway C when he spotted a structure fire on County Road 2070. The Lenox Fire Department responded to the scene and it was reported that the house had been empty for some time. The Fire Marshall was called and came out to the scene and the cause of the fire is listed as undetermined at this time. While investigating the fire, Deputy Robbins and Corporal Wimont discovered a stolen vehicle at an adjacent property. The vehicle, a 2006 GMC Yukon, had been reported stolen from Rolla on December 26^th, 2013.  The vehicle was towed to Whitaker’s Towing for processing by the Rolla Police Department.

Superintendent Bill Black expressed appreciation on behalf of the National Park Service (NPS) for the tremendous level of public interest and participation in the planning process for the Draft General Management Plan for Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The public comment period for the Draft began on November 8, 2013, and concluded on February 7, 2014. During that time nearly 1,500 people attended the public open house sessions to learn about the Draft and to provide their comments. More than 2,700 comments were registered on the public comment website during the comment period.  Over 10,000 names on several petitions were presented to the park.  In addition, hundreds of letters have been mailed or delivered to park headquarters. The final General Management Plan is expected to be ready for release during the summer of 2014. Following the distribution of the final document and a 30-day no-action period, a record of decision approving the plan will be prepared for signature by the Midwest Regional Director for the National Park Service. At this time no final decisions have been made about any of the management proposals in the Draft. Specifically, there has been no change in the current situations regarding horse trails or boat motor horsepower. The current use of trails will be allowed to continue until the NPS has established a new system of designated trails.
